Surprise

Chapter 9: The Last Person They Expected

The voice coming through the mansion speakers did not sound angry.

That was what scared me most.

Angry people made mistakes.

Angry people lost control.

But whoever was standing downstairs sounded calm.

Certain.

Like they already knew how the night would end.

“Claire.””

The voice echoed through every room.

“Bring me the girl.””

Claire's expression changed.

For the first time since she walked into the red room, she looked afraid.

Not nervous.

Not concerned.

Afraid.

I noticed it immediately.

And so did everyone else.

James looked at me.

“Sir…”

I nodded.

“I see it.””

Claire slowly lowered the phone in her hand.

The confidence she had carried all night was gone.

“What are you doing here?”” she whispered.

The speaker crackled.

“You know exactly why I am here.””

My eyes narrowed.

I looked toward the hallway.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Not Claire.

Not my father.

Not Andrew.

Not Elena.

That silence told me something.

They all knew.

And they had all been keeping it from me.

Again.

I stepped forward.

“No more secrets.””

My voice cut through the room.

“Everyone has five seconds to start explaining.””

My father looked at me.

“Carter—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I spent my entire life believing I knew my family.””

I looked around.

“At this point, the only person I trust is the child who just met me tonight.””

Maya held onto my hand.

Elena looked at me with tears in her eyes.

I knew she wanted to say something.

But fear stopped her.

That hurt more than the lies.

Because Elena had always been the one person I thought would never hide anything from me.

The speaker clicked again.

“Claire.””

The unknown man spoke.

“You have failed.””

Claire's face became pale.

“I didn't fail.””

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“You always were stubborn.””

Claire stepped toward the door.

“I did everything you asked.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at her.

“What?””

Claire stopped.

Too late.

She realized she had revealed something.

I stepped closer.

“Who are you talking to?””

She didn't answer.

My father did.

His voice was barely audible.

“Victor.””

The name sent a chill through the room.

Victor Hale.

The man everyone believed was dead.

The man connected to Elena's disappearance.

The man Richard had warned me about.

I looked at the speaker.

“Victor Hale.””

Silence.

Then the voice answered.

“Yes, Carter.””

My blood ran cold.

“You know who I am?””

A soft laugh.

“I have known who you were since you were born.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

Another secret.

Another piece missing.

“Why are you here?””

Victor answered immediately.

“For Maya.””

Elena grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“He wants our daughter.””

She nodded.

“And he won't stop.””

I turned back toward the speaker.

“You will not get near her.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“You still don't understand.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Understand what?””

“That child is not valuable because she is your daughter.””

He paused.

“She is valuable because of what she carries.””

I felt anger rise.

“She is a person.””

“Yes.””

His voice became colder.

“And that is why Elena was so difficult.””

My wife froze.

Victor continued.

“She cared more about protecting the child than protecting the truth.””

I looked at Elena.

“What truth?””

Victor laughed.

“You still don't know.””

I felt exhausted.

Five years of searching.

Hours of questions.

A lifetime of secrets.

And every answer created another mystery.

I turned toward Elena.

“Tell me.””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“I wanted to.””

“Then do it.””

Her voice shook.

“Maya's birth wasn't normal.””

My heart tightened.

“She was born in a private hospital.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to hide from them.””

“Who?””

“The people connected to your family's foundation.””

I looked at my father.

He nodded slowly.

Elena continued.

“When Maya was born, we discovered something.””

“What?””

She took a breath.

“She had access to something nobody knew existed.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

My father stepped forward.

“Carter, your grandfather created a safety system.””

I frowned.

“A system?””

“Not digital.””

He looked at Maya.

“Biological.””

The words sounded impossible.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked ashamed.

“It means your grandfather hid information in the only place he believed enemies couldn't reach.””

Nobody spoke.

Then I understood.

“No.””

My father nodded.

“Maya inherited it.””

I looked at my daughter.

A five-year-old girl.

A child who had spent her life running from people who wanted something she never asked for.

My anger became something deeper.

Something protective.

I pulled Maya closer.

“She is not a key.””

Nobody answered.

“She is not a secret.””

I looked at Victor's cameras.

“She is my daughter.””

Victor's voice became quieter.

“And that is exactly why I knew you would be difficult.””

The mansion suddenly shook.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

James looked toward the hallway.

“They're inside.””

My body tensed.

“How many?””

He checked his device.

Then his expression changed.

“Too many.””

Claire looked toward the door.

Victor spoke again.

“Claire.””

She looked at the speaker.

“Yes?””

“You were supposed to bring Maya quietly.””

Claire swallowed.

“And now?””

A pause.

“Now I clean up your mistake.””

The lights went out.

Again.

But this time, nobody panicked.

Because we understood.

Someone was coming.

James moved immediately.

“Everyone against the wall.””

Security officers who had been standing behind Claire suddenly moved.

Not toward us.

Toward her.

Claire looked shocked.

“What are you doing?””

One of them lowered his head.

“Sorry.””

Her face changed.

“You work for him?””

The guard didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Claire had never been in control.

She was just another person being used.

My father looked at me.

“There is a hidden passage behind the painting.””

I stared.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I built it.””

Of course.

Another secret.

But this time, I didn't question it.

Because outside the room, footsteps were getting closer.

Elena grabbed Maya.

“Carter.””

I looked at her.

“I am not leaving without you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I don't deserve that.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to decide that.””

A small smile appeared.

The first real one I had seen from her all night.

Then Titan suddenly moved.

He walked toward the door.

His body lowered.

Ready.

The footsteps stopped outside.

Everyone froze.

The door opened slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Expensive suit.

Cold eyes.

Victor Hale.

He looked exactly like the photographs.

The man who had haunted my company.

The man who had supposedly died.

He looked at me.

Then at Maya.

And smiled.

“Finally.””

Nobody moved.

Victor looked at Elena.

“You made this much harder than necessary.””

Elena stepped in front of Maya.

“You don't get her.””

Victor sighed.

“Still protecting her.””

Then he looked at me.

“Carter, do you know what your biggest mistake was?””

I said nothing.

“You thought Elena disappeared because she was afraid.””

He stepped closer.

“She disappeared because she discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Victor smiled.

“The truth that your family has been protecting something for generations.””

I stared.

“What?””

Victor looked at Maya.

“Something that should have belonged to me.””

My father stepped forward.

“You destroyed enough lives.””

Victor laughed.

“You still pretend you are different from me.””

The words affected my father.

Because they were not completely false.

Victor looked back at me.

“Ask your father what happened twenty years ago.””

I looked at him.

My father stayed silent.

“Ask him why he faked his death.””

Silence.

“Ask him why your mother disappeared too.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

And that was when I knew.

Victor wasn't lying.

Not completely.

My entire family had been hiding something.

Victor stepped closer.

“And ask him why Maya was never supposed to survive.””

Elena gasped.

“No.””

My father looked devastated.

“Victor.””

For the first time…

Victor looked angry.

“Because of you, I lost everything.””

He looked at Maya.

“But tonight, I get what I was promised.””

He reached out.

Titan moved instantly.

The dog lunged forward.

Not attacking.

Protecting.

Victor stopped.

And something strange happened.

He looked afraid.

Because Titan wasn't looking at him.

Titan was looking behind him.

Everyone followed the dog's eyes.

A figure stood in the hallway.

A woman.

Older.

Holding a small folder.

Victor turned.

And all the color left his face.

Because the woman standing there…

was the last person anyone expected.

My mother.

The woman we buried twenty years ago.

She looked at Victor.

And said:

“You still haven't learned one thing.””

Victor stepped backward.

“What?””

My mother opened the folder.

“You should never underestimate a Carter.””

Then she looked at me.

“Carter, I'm sorry.””

My heart stopped.

Because she wasn't looking at Victor.

She was looking at Maya.

And she said:

“The truth about your daughter is not what they told you.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

And the name written on it wasn't Maya Carter.

It was a name I had never seen before.

A name that changed everything.

May you like

Because my daughter…

had been born with another identity.
