Surprise

Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

I had spent five years blaming myself for losing Elena.

Five years wondering if I should have noticed something.

Five years asking myself the same impossible question.

What could I have done differently?

But standing in that hallway, watching my own brother step out of the darkness, I finally understood something.

The answer had never been about what I failed to see.

It was about what someone worked very hard to hide.

Andrew Carter stood beneath the red emergency lights like he belonged there.

Like this was still his home.

Like he hadn't just walked into the room where we discovered he might have destroyed my family.

He was older than me by three years.

Growing up, everyone thought Andrew and I were inseparable.

We played together.

Built our first company ideas together.

Sat beside each other at our parents' dinner table.

When our father died, Andrew was the one who put his hand on my shoulder and said:

“We only have each other now.””

I believed him.

For decades, I believed him.

Until that moment.

Titan stood between Andrew and Maya, his entire body tense.

The dog that had ignored armed guards.

The dog that had accepted strangers.

The dog that had spent five years waiting for Elena.

Was now looking at my brother like he recognized a threat.

Andrew noticed.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Interesting.””

My jaw tightened.

“What?””

He looked at Titan.

“He remembers.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“You know what he remembers?””

Andrew looked at me.

“I know a lot more than you think.””

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

James moved beside me.

Two security officers positioned themselves behind Andrew.

But my brother didn't look worried.

That bothered me more than anything.

A guilty person should be afraid.

Andrew looked calm.

Almost disappointed.

“Carter, you really should have listened to Elena.””

My chest tightened.

“You don't get to say her name.””

His expression changed slightly.

“Actually, I do.””

The anger inside me exploded.

“Five years.””

My voice echoed through the hallway.

“Five years my wife was gone.””

Andrew remained silent.

“Five years my daughter grew up without me.””

His eyes moved toward Maya.

Something strange crossed his face.

Not surprise.

Not anger.

Something closer to regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I never wanted that.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You never wanted that?””

I pointed toward Maya.

“Look at her.””

Andrew looked away.

“Don't pretend you care.””

His eyes returned to mine.

“You think I don't?””

“Then explain.””

The hallway became silent.

Everyone waited.

Andrew took a slow breath.

“Because the truth is not what you think.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone says that right before they reveal something worse.””

For the first time, Andrew looked hurt.

Maybe because it was true.

Maybe because he knew he deserved it.

“Carter…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don't get to call me that like you're my brother.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because even after everything…

some part of me still wanted him to deny it.

To tell me I was wrong.

To tell me this was some terrible misunderstanding.

But Andrew only looked at the floor.

And that silence destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

Maya squeezed my hand.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

She was staring at Andrew.

“Mommy said he wasn't the bad one.””

I froze.

Everyone turned toward her.

Andrew looked at Maya.

“What did Elena tell you?””

Maya hesitated.

“She said Uncle Andrew was angry.””

My heart stopped.

Andrew's face changed.

“Angry?””

Maya nodded.

“She said he was angry because he thought you took everything.””

The hallway became completely still.

I looked at my brother.

“What does that mean?””

Andrew didn't answer.

I stepped forward.

“What did she mean?””

His eyes stayed on Maya.

Then he finally whispered:

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I was jealous.””

The confession shocked me.

Not because he admitted jealousy.

Because I had never heard Andrew admit anything like that.

Not once.

He was always the confident one.

The charming one.

The person who could walk into any room and make everyone believe he belonged there.

But now he looked exhausted.

“I spent my entire life standing next to you,” he said.

I frowned.

“What?””

“You were always the one people noticed.””

I stared at him.

“Andrew…”

“You had the ideas. The vision. The confidence.””

He laughed quietly.

“And somehow, every time I helped you, everyone called me lucky.””

The words came out like he had been holding them for years.

“You became the billionaire.””

I shook my head.

“We built that company together.””

“No.””

His voice suddenly became sharp.

“You built it.””

Silence.

“You made the decisions. You took the risks. You became the name everyone knew.””

He looked at me.

“I became your assistant.””

My expression hardened.

“That doesn't excuse anything.””

“I know.””

The answer surprised me.

Andrew didn't fight back.

He just accepted it.

That scared me.

“Then tell me what happened five years ago.””

Andrew looked toward Elena's old bedroom.

“When Elena disappeared, she came to me first.””

My body went cold.

“She what?””

“She knew someone was watching her.””

“Why you?””

“Because she didn't know who else to trust.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Andrew looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

His voice dropped.

“That she was right.””

I didn't understand.

“About what?””

Andrew looked at me.

“About the person inside your company.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

“Then say the name.””

Andrew didn't.

Instead, he said:

“Your company wasn't losing money because of a bad investment.””

My face changed.

“What?””

“Someone was stealing from you.””

The room went quiet.

“How much?””

Andrew looked at James.

Then back at me.

“Enough to destroy everything you built.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who?””

Andrew swallowed.

“Someone with access.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

He closed his eyes.

“Someone who knew your passwords.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Only a few people had ever known that.

My assistant.

My financial director.

Richard.

Andrew.

And Elena.

I looked around.

Too many possibilities.

Not enough answers.

Then Maya suddenly spoke.

“Mommy said the red room.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What red room?””

She pointed upstairs.

“The room with the paintings.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew exactly what she meant.

There was one room in the mansion nobody entered.

The old family archive room.

My father had built it decades ago.

The walls were covered with old portraits.

Family history.

Company documents.

Private records.

I looked at Andrew.

“How does she know about that room?””

Andrew's expression changed.

“She was there.””

“What?””

Andrew looked toward the stairs.

“Elena found something hidden inside.””

I moved immediately.

“What?””

But before Andrew could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

James grabbed his radio.

“Security team, check the upper floor.””

Static.

Then a voice.

“Sir…”

The guard sounded frightened.

“We found someone.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“A woman.””

The world seemed to stop.

I looked at Maya.

She was already crying.

“Mommy.””

I ran.

I don't remember moving.

I only remember the stairs.

The hallway.

The door.

The feeling that my entire life was about to change again.

When I reached the red room, the door was open.

Two guards stood outside.

Neither of them spoke.

I entered.

And there she was.

Standing beside the old family portraits.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably her.

Elena.

My wife.

The woman I had mourned for five years.

The woman I thought I would never see again.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then her eyes found mine.

And everything disappeared.

“Carter…”

I couldn't breathe.

I couldn't think.

I just stared.

Then Maya ran past me.

“Mommy!””

Elena dropped to her knees.

She opened her arms.

And my daughter collapsed into them.

The sound Elena made broke something inside me.

A mother reunited with the child she had protected from the shadows.

I turned away for a moment.

Because I couldn't let anyone see me break.

Five years of pain.

Five years of questions.

Five years of believing the worst.

And she was here.

Alive.

But when I looked back at Elena…

I saw something that terrified me.

She wasn't relieved.

She wasn't safe.

She was looking over my shoulder.

At someone behind me.

I followed her eyes.

Andrew was standing in the doorway.

Elena's face changed.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Fear.

“Andrew…”

My brother stopped.

And Elena whispered the words that made the entire room go silent.

“You weren't supposed to bring him here.””

Andrew looked confused.

“Bring who?””

Elena slowly stood.

Her eyes moved to me.

Then to Maya.

Then back to Andrew.

“Not Carter.””

She shook her head.

“The person who followed him.””

Everyone froze.

James immediately reached for his radio.

“What person?””

Elena's face went pale.

“The person who has been waiting five years for Maya to come back.””

The lights in the red room suddenly flickered.

And from somewhere inside the mansion…

a door quietly closed.

Elena grabbed Maya's hand.

“Carter.””

Her voice trembled.

“We have to leave.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Because her next words changed everything.

“Because the person who wanted me gone…”

May you like

She whispered.

“Is standing inside this house right now.””
