Chapter 7: The Truth Beneath the Mansion
For five years, I believed the walls of my mansion protected my family.
I was wrong.
The walls had been hiding the people who wanted to destroy it.
Claire Morgan stood in the doorway with a calm smile on her face.
The same smile I had seen thousands of times.
The same expression she wore when she handed me my morning schedule.
When she reminded me about meetings.
When she brought coffee into my office and asked about my daughter's future.
Except now, I finally saw what had always been there.
She wasn't helping me.
She was watching me.
Behind her stood four members of my own security team.
Men I had personally hired.
Men who had guarded my home.
Men who had stood beside me while I searched for Elena.
My stomach turned.
“How long?”” I asked.
Claire tilted her head.
“What?””
“How long have you been lying to me?””
Her smile faded slightly.
Then she stepped into the room.
“Long enough.””
James moved forward.
“Don't come any closer.””
Claire glanced at him.
“James, don't make this harder.””
His face hardened.
“You don't get to tell me what to do.””
A small smile returned to her face.
“I always admired your loyalty.””
She looked around the room.
“Unfortunately, loyalty is usually wasted on people who don't deserve it.””
I felt anger rise.
“You locked us in this room.””
“Yes.””
“You threatened my daughter.””
Claire looked at Maya.
For the first time, something cold appeared in her eyes.
“She isn't just your daughter.””
Elena immediately stepped in front of Maya.
“She is a child.””
Claire looked at Elena.
“You know exactly what she is.””
The words confused me.
But they terrified Elena.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
I looked between them.
“What is everyone hiding from me?””
Claire sighed.
“Carter, this is why you were always easy to control.””
My jaw tightened.
“Excuse me?””
“You trusted people.””
She looked around.
“You believed family meant something.””
Then she looked at me.
“You thought money was your greatest protection.””
Her voice became quieter.
“It was your greatest weakness.””
I stepped closer.
“You spent five years hiding my wife from me.””
Claire didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
The admission hit harder than I expected.
James looked at her in disbelief.
“You're admitting it?””
Claire shrugged.
“I have nothing left to lose.””
I stared at her.
“Where did you take Elena?””
Claire looked toward my wife.
“That wasn't my decision.””
Elena's expression changed.
“Don't lie.””
Claire smiled.
“Still brave after all these years.””
I looked at Elena.
“You know her?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“She was there the night I disappeared.””
The room went silent.
I turned back to Claire.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at Maya.
“Because I needed to make sure the child survived.””
My entire body froze.
“Needed?””
The word came out like a whisper.
“You were responsible.””
Claire didn't answer.
That was enough.
I moved toward her.
James grabbed my arm.
“Sir.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I knew I needed answers.
“You have five seconds to start explaining.””
Claire looked almost amused.
“You still think you are in control.””
She walked farther into the room.
“The problem with powerful people is they believe everything belongs to them.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Your company.””
“Your house.””
“Your family.””
I clenched my fists.
“She is my family.””
Claire's expression changed.
“No.””
She looked at Maya.
“She is Elena's miracle.””
Then she looked back at me.
“And your biggest secret.””
I felt Elena tense beside me.
“What secret?””
Claire smiled.
“Ask your wife.””
I turned.
“Elena?””
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
“Tell me.””
A tear moved down her cheek.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“When I knew you were safe.””
I shook my head.
“Safe from what?””
Elena looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“From the people who wanted Maya.””
The room became silent.
Claire folded her arms.
“Now you understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I don't.””
I pointed at Maya.
“She is a child. Why would anyone want her?””
Elena took a breath.
“Because of her blood.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
Claire smiled.
“Finally.””
I looked at Elena.
“What are you talking about?””
She stepped closer.
“Before we got married, you told me your father left behind records.””
I nodded slowly.
“Family records.””
“Not just family records.””
She looked at the old portraits on the wall.
“Your father was investigating something before he died.””
I frowned.
“My father died in an accident.””
Elena didn't answer.
And that silence destroyed another piece of my reality.
“You knew?””
She whispered:
“I found his files.””
I looked at Andrew.
He looked down.
“You knew too.””
Andrew nodded.
“I found out after Elena.””
My voice became colder.
“And nobody thought to tell me?””
Andrew looked ashamed.
“We were trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A bitter, empty laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around the room.
“Protect me by lying.””
Nobody answered.
Claire suddenly laughed softly.
“You see?””
She looked at Elena.
“This is why he was never ready.””
My eyes turned toward her.
“Ready for what?””
Claire stepped closer.
“To know the truth.””
She pointed toward Maya.
“Her existence changes everything.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was holding Titan tightly.
Completely unaware that adults around her were discussing secrets that had shaped her entire life.
I lowered my voice.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I don't care about companies.””
I looked at Claire.
“I don't care about money.””
Then I looked at Elena.
“I don't care about whatever secrets people think are more important than family.””
My voice broke.
“I lost five years with my daughter.””
Silence.
“That is the only thing I care about.””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
Maya slowly walked toward me.
“Daddy.””
I knelt down.
She wrapped her arms around me.
And for the first time in five years…
I held my daughter.
Not a photograph.
Not an idea.
Not a dream.
My daughter.
I closed my eyes.
Then I heard Claire say something that made me freeze.
“That's exactly why they chose you.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Claire watched us.
“They knew you would choose love over power.””
I stood.
“Who is they?””
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward Andrew.
“Tell him.””
Andrew went pale.
“No.””
“Tell him.””
I looked at my brother.
“What does she mean?””
Andrew looked broken.
“I found out the truth six months after Elena disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
He looked at Elena.
Then at me.
“That Maya wasn't the only child involved.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“What?””
Andrew continued.
“There was another baby.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“Andrew.””
“I have to tell him.””
My breathing became uneven.
“Another baby?””
Claire smiled.
“Yes.””
She walked toward the wall.
Toward an old portrait of my father.
“Your family has been hiding something for generations.””
She touched the frame.
“Something worth more than your entire fortune.””
James looked confused.
“What could possibly be worth that much?””
Claire looked at him.
“Power.””
The word hung in the air.
Elena grabbed my hand.
“Carter, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“Everything I did was to protect Maya.””
“I know.””
“But there is something I never told you.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She looked toward the portrait.
“The night I disappeared…”
A pause.
“I wasn't running from them.””
The room became silent.
“I was running from someone who already had access to our home.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Elena looked at Claire.
Then at Andrew.
Then at me.
“The person who helped them.””
Nobody moved.
The mansion seemed to hold its breath.
Then Claire smiled.
Because she knew what was coming.
Elena whispered:
“The person who gave them information…”
Her voice trembled.
“Was someone who shared your last name.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Andrew.
But he wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at someone behind me.
Everyone turned.
The door at the end of the hallway opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A face I recognized from hundreds of family photographs.
A face I had buried years ago.
My father.
Impossible.
I couldn't breathe.
Claire smiled.
“Carter.””
The man walked forward slowly.
“You finally found the truth.””
My knees weakened.
Because my father had been dead for twenty years.
And yet he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
And the first words he said were:
“I’m sorry, son.””
May you like
Then he looked at Maya.
“But she was never supposed to be found.””
