Chapter 2: The Secret Elena Left Behind
I read the sentence again and again until the words stopped looking like words.
Someone inside this mansion wanted me gone.
The paper trembled between my fingers.
For five years, I had searched for Elena in every place I could imagine.
Hospitals.
Airports.
Hotels.
Abandoned properties.
Hidden accounts.
I had followed every possible lead, chased every rumor, and spent endless nights staring at old photographs, trying to find a clue I had missed.
But never once had I considered the possibility that the danger had been standing beside me the entire time.
Inside my own home.
I looked around the courtyard.
At my employees.
My security team.
The guests who were pretending not to listen.
Every face suddenly looked different.
Every person became a question.
Maya stood beside Titan, holding onto his massive neck like he was the only safe thing in the world.
The dog watched me carefully.
Almost like he knew the truth before I did.
“Mr. Carter,” my head of security, James, said quietly, “we need to move everyone inside.””
I folded the letter quickly.
“No.””
James looked surprised.
“Sir?””
“No one leaves.””
The guests began whispering.
I could feel the tension spreading.
For years, I had built Carter Industries into a global empire by trusting my instincts.
And my instincts were screaming.
Something was wrong.
“Lock the gates,” I ordered.
James hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at him.
“I've never been more sure about anything.””
He nodded and immediately turned away.
“Everyone stay calm,” he announced to the crowd.
“Please return to the main hall.””
People slowly began moving.
But they weren't looking at me.
They were looking at Maya.
At Titan.
At the impossible scene unfolding in front of them.
A missing woman's child had appeared at my mansion.
And my supposedly dangerous guard dog had welcomed her like family.
I crouched beside Maya.
“Sweetheart, where is your mother right now?””
Her expression changed.
The confidence she had shown with Titan disappeared.
She looked down at her shoes.
“I don't know.””
Those three words hurt more than I expected.
“You don't know?””
She shook her head.
“Mommy said I had to come here alone.””
My chest tightened.
“Alone?””
She nodded.
“She said bad people were looking for us.””
The courtyard suddenly felt colder.
I glanced at James.
He heard it too.
“Who are these people?”” I asked gently.
Maya looked around nervously.
Then she whispered:
“The ones who made Mommy disappear.””
The air left my lungs.
For five years, I had convinced myself Elena's disappearance was a tragedy.
A terrible accident.
A mystery.
But what if it wasn't?
What if someone had taken her from me?
I looked at the letter in my hand.
“Did your mother tell you anything else?””
Maya nodded.
“She told me not to open the locket unless I found Titan.””
I looked at the silver necklace.
“What does that mean?””
“I don't know.””
She touched the locket.
“She said only Daddy would understand.””
The word hit me harder than I expected.
Daddy.
I had spent five years thinking I would never hear a child call me that.
Elena and I had talked about having children.
We had a room upstairs that was supposed to become a nursery someday.
A small room painted yellow because Elena said babies deserved sunshine.
But that room stayed empty.
Until now.
“Maya,” I said softly, “can I ask you something?””
She nodded.
“How old are you?””
“Five.””
My heart stopped.
Five.
Exactly the amount of time Elena had been gone.
I stared at the little girl.
The resemblance wasn't just in her eyes anymore.
It was everywhere.
The way she smiled.
The way she held her hands.
The small crease between her eyebrows when she was worried.
A terrifying thought entered my mind.
One I was afraid to say out loud.
But before I could ask, Maya looked past me.
Her face suddenly changed.
“That's him.””
I turned.
“What?””
She pointed toward the mansion entrance.
Standing beneath the lights was Richard Hale.
My vice president.
My closest business partner.
The man who had worked beside me for fifteen years.
He looked at Maya.
And for a brief moment...
Fear crossed his face.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
He walked toward us with a forced smile.
“Carter,” he said.
“What is going on?””
I stood slowly.
“That's what I'm trying to figure out.””
Richard looked at Maya.
“Who is this child?””
I watched him carefully.
“She says her mother is Elena.””
Richard froze.
Only for half a second.
But I saw it.
A person can control their words.
They can control their expression.
But they cannot always control their first reaction.
And Richard's first reaction was fear.
“What?”” he asked.
Too quickly.
I stepped closer.
“You heard me.””
He looked at the letter in my hand.
Then at the locket around Maya's neck.
His face became pale.
“Carter…”
“What?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
For the first time in fifteen years, my friend looked like someone hiding something.
“Where did she come from?”” he asked.
I studied him.
“That is my question.””
Richard looked away.
And that was when I knew.
He knew something.
Maybe not everything.
But something.
“James,” I called.
My security chief immediately approached.
“Yes, sir?””
“Richard doesn't leave the property.””
Richard's eyes widened.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
His expression hardened.
“Carter, think carefully before you make accusations.””
“I haven't accused you of anything.””
I held up Elena's letter.
“But someone inside this mansion knew she was in danger.””
Richard stared at me.
For a moment, anger flashed across his face.
Then something else replaced it.
Concern.
Or maybe guilt.
“Carter,” he said quietly, “you don't know what you're dealing with.””
The sentence made my skin crawl.
Because it wasn't a denial.
It was a warning.
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
Richard said nothing.
“Tell me where my wife is.””
Silence.
Maya moved closer to Titan.
The dog immediately stood between her and Richard.
Richard noticed.
His face changed.
“You see?””
He whispered.
“What?””
“Even Titan knows.””
I frowned.
“Knows what?””
Richard looked at the dog.
Then at Maya.
“She shouldn't be here.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
Richard looked like he wanted to speak.
But before he could, a loud crash came from inside the mansion.
Everyone turned.
A servant screamed.
“Mr. Carter!””
I ran toward the sound.
The others followed.
The noise came from Elena's old bedroom.
The room that had remained locked for five years.
The room nobody entered.
The room where Titan had slept every night.
But when I reached the door, I stopped.
Because the lock was broken.
Someone had been inside.
My hand moved slowly toward the handle.
James raised his weapon.
“Sir, wait.””
I ignored him.
I opened the door.
The room smelled exactly the same.
Elena's perfume still lingered faintly in the air.
Her books were still arranged on the shelf.
Her photographs were still on the nightstand.
Everything looked untouched.
Except for one thing.
The wooden box sitting in the center of the bed.
A box I had never seen before.
I walked closer.
My name was carved into the top.
CARTER.
My hands shook.
“How did this get here?”” James asked.
Nobody answered.
I opened the box.
Inside was a photograph.
I picked it up.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a picture of Elena.
Holding a baby.
A newborn baby.
The child was wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
Five years earlier.
The night Elena disappeared.
My breathing became uneven.
Then I saw the second item inside the box.
A hospital bracelet.
I picked it up.
The name printed on it made my heart stop.
Maya Carter.
I looked toward the doorway.
The little girl was standing there.
Watching me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daddy?””
The room went silent.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because for five years, I believed Elena had taken something from me.
But standing there in that bedroom, holding proof in my hands, I realized the truth was much worse.
Someone had stolen five years from all of us.
I looked at Maya.
Then at the photograph.
Then back at the little girl who carried my wife's locket.
And finally, I looked at the broken lock on Elena's bedroom door.
Because there was only one question left.
May you like
If Elena wanted me to find Maya…
why had someone just broken into the one room where Elena left the truth behind?
