Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Died
I had spent twenty years missing my father.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered the black suit I wore.
I remembered standing beside my mother while people whispered about how unfair life could be.
I remembered the empty chair at every holiday dinner afterward.
For two decades, I believed my father was gone.
But he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
Yet unmistakably him.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Nobody moved.
Not Elena.
Not Andrew.
Not Claire.
Not even Titan.
The massive dog stood frozen, staring at the man who had just walked into the hallway.
Then, slowly…
Titan began growling.
My father looked at him.
And for the first time, his calm expression broke.
“Even after all these years…”
His voice was low.
“He still remembers.””
My blood ran cold.
I stepped forward.
“What is happening?””
My father looked at me.
And the strangest part was not that he looked alive.
It was that he looked sad.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“Carter…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, you don't get to say my name.””
His eyes lowered.
“I understand.””
“You died.””
Silence.
“You died twenty years ago.””
He took a slow breath.
“Yes.””
My anger grew.
“Yes?””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“That is all you have to say?””
My father looked around the room.
At Elena.
At Maya.
At the people whose lives had been destroyed by secrets.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
I stared at him.
“You never wanted me to know you were alive?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
His eyes moved toward Claire.
Then Andrew.
Then finally Maya.
“Because the moment you knew the truth, they would come for you.””
I looked at Claire.
“She has already come.””
My father nodded.
“And that means we are out of time.””
The words terrified me.
I stepped closer.
“Explain everything.””
My father looked at Maya.
“First, get her away from here.””
Elena immediately moved closer to Maya.
“No.””
My father looked at her.
“She cannot stay in this room.””
Elena's expression hardened.
“I spent five years protecting her.””
“And I spent twenty years making sure people didn't find her.””
The tension between them was immediate.
I looked between them.
“What is Maya?””
The question sounded horrible.
Because she wasn't a thing.
She was my daughter.
But everyone was treating her like she held the key to something.
My father looked at me.
“She is the reason your mother and I disappeared.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
He walked slowly into the room.
“Before I became the CEO of Carter Industries, before the money, before the mansion, our family was part of something older.””
I frowned.
“Older than the company?””
“Yes.””
He looked toward the portraits.
“Your grandfather created a private foundation.””
I had heard of it.
A charity organization.
Nothing more.
“He used it to protect certain information.””
“What information?””
My father looked at Elena.
“The kind of information that makes powerful people dangerous.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt my patience disappearing.
“I need actual answers.””
He nodded.
“You deserve them.””
He looked at Maya.
“Years ago, our family discovered that certain corporations were manipulating governments, markets, and organizations through hidden networks.””
James frowned.
“Are you saying—”
“I am saying powerful people built systems that nobody was supposed to see.””
My father looked at me.
“And when I discovered how deep it went, I tried to expose it.””
My stomach tightened.
“And they killed you?””
He was silent.
Then:
“They tried.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at him.
“You faked your death.””
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple it made me angry.
“You let your son believe you were dead.””
My father's face changed.
Regret.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I almost shouted.
“Everyone says that!””
The room went silent.
I looked around.
“My wife disappeared because someone wanted to protect me.””
“My brother lied because he wanted to protect me.””
“My assistant betrayed me because apparently she knows what's best for me.””
I looked at my father.
“And now you?””
My voice broke.
“When does anyone actually trust me enough to tell me the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had a good answer.
Maya reached for my hand.
I looked down.
She was scared.
Not of the secrets.
Of the anger.
I immediately softened.
I knelt beside her.
“I'm okay.””
She whispered:
“Mommy said you would be angry.””
I looked at Elena.
She looked away.
“What else did she tell you?””
Maya hesitated.
“She said you would feel like everyone left you.””
The words hit me.
Because that was exactly how I felt.
My father watched silently.
Then he said:
“Elena was right.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“She understood you better than anyone.””
Elena looked at him.
“You should have told him.””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission surprised me.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just regret.
“I made a mistake.””
The room became quiet.
“My biggest mistake was believing I could control the danger around my family.””
He looked at Maya.
“And I failed.””
For the first time, I saw my father not as the powerful man from my childhood.
Not as the billionaire founder everyone admired.
But as an old man carrying twenty years of guilt.
Then Claire spoke.
“Beautiful.””
Everyone turned.
She was still standing near the doorway.
Watching.
“You finally found your family reunion.””
Her smile returned.
“Unfortunately, it changes nothing.””
James looked at her.
“Why are you doing this?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because unlike all of you, I understand reality.””
She looked at me.
“Money doesn't protect people.””
She looked at my father.
“Secrets do.””
I stepped toward her.
“You ruined my family.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at my father.
“Your family ruined itself.””
My father stared at her.
“You always were ambitious.””
Claire smiled.
“And you always underestimated me.””
I looked between them.
“You two know each other.””
My father nodded.
“She worked for me.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“Twenty years ago.””
Claire's smile widened.
“I was your father's assistant before I was yours.””
The room became silent.
I stared at her.
“You planned all of this.””
Claire didn't deny it.
“I continued what he started.””
My father stepped forward.
“No.””
Claire laughed.
“You still think you are the hero.””
She looked at me.
“Your father discovered the truth, then tried to destroy the system.””
She pointed at him.
“I rebuilt it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And Elena?””
Claire's face became cold.
“She got too close.””
Elena stepped forward.
“You tried to kill me.””
Claire looked at her.
“I tried to remove a problem.””
My body went still.
A problem.
That was how she saw my wife.
My daughter.
My family.
Problems.
I looked at James.
“Take her.””
The security officers behind Claire hesitated.
They looked at her.
Then at me.
Then lowered their weapons.
I realized something.
They weren't loyal to Claire.
They were afraid of her.
James moved forward.
But Claire smiled.
“You really think this ends here?””
She reached into her pocket.
Everyone reacted.
But she didn't pull out a weapon.
She pulled out a phone.
And pressed a button.
The mansion screens suddenly turned on.
Every television.
Every monitor.
Every security display.
A video appeared.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby.
Maya.
My heart stopped.
Elena grabbed my arm.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“You didn't tell him everything.””
I stared at the screen.
The video showed Elena holding baby Maya.
But there was someone else in the room.
Someone standing beside her.
Someone I recognized.
My father's face changed.
Because he recognized him too.
Claire whispered:
“Carter, meet the person who started this entire nightmare.””
The camera turned.
And another man appeared.
A younger version of someone I knew.
My brother.
Andrew.
But he wasn't alone.
He was standing beside a woman.
My mother.
Who I had also buried years ago.
The room went silent.
My entire family was on that screen.
Alive.
Together.
Planning something.
I looked at Andrew.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
“Andrew…”
His face broke.
“I can explain.””
I stared at him.
“How long?””
He whispered:
“Since the beginning.””
The screen suddenly went black.
Claire stepped backward.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at everyone.
My father.
My mother on the screen.
Andrew.
Elena.
Maya.
My entire life was a lie.
Then the mansion doors downstairs slammed open.
A voice echoed through the speakers.
A voice I didn't recognize.
“Claire.””
Everyone froze.
“Bring me the girl.””
Claire smiled.
And for the first time that night…
she looked afraid.
May you like
Because whoever was coming…
was someone she feared too.
