Chapter 4: The Person Behind Me
For one second, I couldn't move.
Elena's voice was still echoing through the phone.
Close enough to see who is standing behind you.
My fingers tightened around the device.
The entire room felt frozen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
I slowly turned my head.
And there he was.
Richard Hale.
Standing only a few feet behind me.
His face was pale.
His eyes were fixed on the phone in my hand.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
The realization hit me harder than anything else.
Elena wasn't warning me about a stranger.
She was warning me about him.
“Richard…”
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the accusation behind it.
He immediately raised his hands.
“Carter, wait.””
I stared at him.
“You were behind me.””
“I know how this looks.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don't understand how this looks.””
The man who had stood beside me through every business battle, every family dinner, every celebration, was now standing in the same room where I had just discovered my missing wife had been trying to reach me.
And Elena had been afraid of him.
“Maya,” I said without taking my eyes off Richard, “come here.””
The little girl quickly moved toward me.
Titan followed immediately.
The massive dog placed himself between Maya and Richard.
Richard looked at Titan sadly.
“He always hated me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard looked at the dog.
“Even before Elena disappeared.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You never told me that.””
“You never asked.””
That answer made my blood boil.
“You were my best friend.””
Richard looked away.
“And I failed you.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
But it didn't erase anything.
I turned toward the phone.
“Elena?””
The line was still open.
But there was no answer.
“Elena, talk to me.””
Static.
Then silence.
The call ended.
I immediately called back.
Nothing.
Straight to voicemail.
James stepped closer.
“Sir, we need to secure the building.””
I nodded.
“Lock every exit.””
Richard looked at me.
“You don't understand.””
I turned.
“No, Richard. I understand perfectly.””
“You think I betrayed you.””
“Did you?””
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That was my answer.
I walked toward him.
“Five years.””
My voice cracked.
“Five years I woke up wondering if my wife was dead.””
Richard swallowed.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
My anger finally broke through.
“You don't know what it feels like to walk into an empty bedroom every morning. You don't know what it feels like to hold onto a wedding ring because it's the only proof someone ever loved you.””
The room became silent.
“You don't know what it feels like to wonder if you failed the person you promised to protect.””
Richard looked down.
“I do know.””
I froze.
“What?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was there the night she disappeared.””
The words hit like a wall.
I stared at him.
“What did you just say?””
Richard took a deep breath.
“I was there.””
Nobody moved.
James immediately stepped forward.
“Sir, should I—”
I raised my hand.
“No.””
My eyes stayed on Richard.
“Explain.””
Richard looked at Maya.
Then at Titan.
Then finally at me.
“Five years ago, Elena called me.””
“Why?””
“She was scared.””
The room felt colder.
“What did she say?””
Richard hesitated.
“She said she found something in your company records.””
My expression changed.
“My company?””
Richard nodded.
“Elena had always been curious. She helped with charity projects, employee programs, financial reviews. She noticed certain accounts didn't make sense.””
“What accounts?””
“Money was being moved through hidden companies.””
I stared at him.
“By who?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
And that silence told me the answer was close.
“Richard.””
His voice dropped.
“Someone inside Carter Industries.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Before he could answer, Maya suddenly spoke.
“Mommy said not to trust him.””
Everyone turned.
Maya was looking at Richard.
Richard's face changed.
“What did she tell you?””
The little girl held onto Titan's fur.
“She said Uncle Richard was trying to help.””
I frowned.
“But?””
Maya looked scared.
“She said sometimes bad people pretend to help.””
Richard closed his eyes.
A painful expression crossed his face.
“She told you that?””
Maya nodded.
“She said if anything happened, I should find Daddy.””
I looked at Richard.
“Why would Elena warn her about you?””
Richard didn't answer.
Because before he could, a loud alarm suddenly started outside.
James looked at his radio.
“Security breach.””
My body tensed.
“Where?””
He checked the screen.
“The east wing.””
My old study.
The same place where Elena's letter had been found.
I moved immediately.
James followed.
Richard followed too.
I turned.
“Stay back.””
“I can help.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“You've helped enough.””
Richard stopped.
For the first time, I saw pain on his face.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Pain.
But I couldn't care anymore.
Not yet.
The east hallway was dark.
The emergency lights had returned, casting everything in a deep red glow.
The mansion looked completely different.
Like a place hiding something.
We reached the study.
The door was open.
Again.
I knew someone had been inside.
James entered first.
Then he stopped.
“What is it?””
I stepped inside.
The room was destroyed.
Books had been pulled from shelves.
Drawers were open.
Papers covered the floor.
Someone had searched the room.
But they weren't looking for valuables.
They were looking for information.
James picked something up from the desk.
“Sir.””
I looked at what he was holding.
A small recorder.
Old-fashioned.
My heart tightened.
“Where did that come from?””
“It was hidden behind the desk.””
I took it.
There was a single button.
Play.
I pressed it.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena's voice.
My entire body froze.
“Carter…”
I closed my eyes.
Hearing her again felt impossible.
“I don't know if you'll ever hear this.””
Her voice was shaking.
“But if you do, it means something went wrong.””
A pause.
Then a quiet breath.
“I need you to know something.””
I held my breath.
“I never left you.””
My eyes burned.
“I never stopped loving you.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Titan lowered his head.
Elena continued.
“I left because I found out someone was using your company to hurt people. When I tried to expose them, they threatened me.””
The recording crackled.
“They threatened our child.””
My heart stopped.
Everyone in the room looked at Maya.
“Our child.””
The words echoed.
Elena knew.
She knew.
Maya wasn't a mystery.
She was our daughter.
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
For five years, I had missed everything.
Her first steps.
Her first words.
Her first birthday.
Every moment.
Gone.
Elena's voice continued.
“I wanted to come back. Every day. But I couldn't risk bringing danger to you.””
Another pause.
Then her voice became quieter.
“The person behind this is someone you trust.””
The recording stopped.
Everyone stood silently.
James looked at me.
“That's it?””
I stared at the recorder.
“No.””
I turned it over.
There was another button.
A second recording.
I pressed it.
This time, Elena sounded different.
More afraid.
“Carter, if you found the second recording, then they already know Maya is with you.””
A chill went through me.
“They will try to take her.””
Maya immediately grabbed my hand.
I squeezed hers.
“No one is taking you.””
Elena continued.
“There is only one person who can explain everything.””
A pause.
Then she said a name.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
My eyes moved toward the doorway.
Richard was standing there.
His face had lost all color.
Elena's voice continued.
“Carter, before you judge him, listen carefully.””
My confusion grew.
“He wasn't the one who betrayed us.””
I looked at Richard.
The room went silent.
Elena continued.
“He was the one who tried to save us.””
Richard closed his eyes.
A tear fell down his face.
I stared at him.
Because everything had just changed.
The man I thought was my enemy…
might have been the only person trying to protect my family.
But then Elena's recording continued.
And her next words made my blood run cold.
“The person who betrayed us is someone much closer.””
Static.
Then one final sentence.
A sentence that destroyed every assumption I had made.
“Carter… the person who planned my disappearance is someone you call family.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Until Maya quietly whispered:
“Daddy…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed toward the doorway.
Her face had gone pale.
“He's here.””
I turned.
Slowly.
And standing at the end of the hallway…
was someone I had known my entire life.
Someone who had comforted me after Elena disappeared.
Someone who had cried beside me.
Someone who had told me they wished they could bring my wife home.
My own brother.
Andrew Carter.
He smiled faintly.
But his eyes weren't smiling.
“Hello, little brother.””
Titan immediately began growling.
And this time…
May you like
he wasn't confused.
He remembered.
