Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside the Walls
For five years, I imagined what I would say if Elena ever came back.
I imagined running toward her.
Holding her.
Asking a thousand questions.
I imagined the moment I would finally tell her how much I missed her.
But when she stood in front of me again, alive and terrified, the only thing I could think about was one question.
Who had taken her away from me?
And why was that person still inside my home?
The red room felt smaller than it had ever been.
Elena held Maya's hand tightly.
My daughter refused to let go of her mother.
Titan stood beside them, watching every person in the room.
Especially Andrew.
My brother looked like he had aged ten years in the last few minutes.
He stared at Elena.
Not with anger.
With disbelief.
“You're alive.””
Elena's expression didn't soften.
“Yes.””
Andrew swallowed.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
The question shocked me.
Not because of what he asked.
Because of the way he asked it.
Like he was hurt.
Like he was the one who had been abandoned.
Elena looked at him carefully.
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””
The words landed hard.
Andrew looked away.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both of them looked at me.
I had waited five years for answers.
I wasn't leaving that room without them.
“Elena,” I said quietly, “start from the beginning.””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“I wish I could.””
“Why can't you?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Because we don't have time.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they know I'm here.””
James immediately turned.
“Who?””
Elena didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the security guards.
“How many people are in the mansion?””
James checked his radio.
“Thirty-two guests remain in the main hall. Twelve employees. Eight security officers.””
Elena's face changed.
“That many?””
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes.
“That's bad.””
My frustration grew.
“Elena, you're talking like we are already losing.””
She looked at me.
And for the first time since seeing her again, I saw how exhausted she truly was.
“I spent five years running from people who never stopped searching.””
She looked at Maya.
“I didn't survive because I was stronger.””
Her voice shook.
“I survived because I stayed invisible.””
The room became silent.
I looked at my daughter.
Five years.
She had spent five years hiding.
And I had known nothing.
“I need the truth,” I said.
Elena nodded slowly.
“You deserve it.””
She sat down beside Maya.
And for a moment, she looked like the woman I remembered.
The woman who used to sit beside me at midnight when I couldn't sleep.
The woman who believed every problem had a solution.
But now there was fear behind her eyes.
“Five years ago,” Elena began, “I found unusual transactions connected to Carter Industries.””
I nodded.
“Richard said someone was moving money.””
“He was right.””
She looked at me.
“But it wasn't just money.””
“What else?””
“Information.””
My expression changed.
“What kind of information?””
“Your company's private contracts. Security systems. Personal schedules.””
I felt a chill.
“Someone was collecting information about me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elena looked at Maya.
“Because you weren't the target.””
I froze.
“What?””
She reached for Maya's hand.
“You were the shield.””
I didn't understand.
“Elena…”
“The person behind this wasn't trying to destroy your company.””
She looked at me.
“They were trying to control you.””
The words disturbed me.
“How?””
“By removing everyone you trusted.””
Silence.
I looked at Andrew.
Then Richard.
Then back at Elena.
“Richard knew?””
“Yes.””
“And Andrew?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
“What about him?””
Elena looked at Andrew.
“He found out too late.””
Andrew's eyes lowered.
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“But not everything.””
My anger returned.
“You still kept secrets.””
“I was trying to protect Elena.””
“By lying to me?””
Andrew looked at me.
“By keeping you alive.””
Nobody spoke.
The statement was heavy.
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to believe he was wrong.
But too many pieces were connecting.
Elena continued.
“The night I disappeared, I was supposed to meet someone who could prove everything.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the door.
“Your father’s old attorney.””
I frowned.
“My father’s attorney died years ago.””
“No.””
Elena shook her head.
“Everyone thought he did.””
Another secret.
Another lie.
My entire life suddenly felt built on things I never knew.
“What happened that night?””
Elena took a deep breath.
“I left the house after dinner.””
I remembered.
That night.
The last night I saw her.
She told me she needed to pick something up.
She kissed me.
She promised she would be back.
She never returned.
“I followed the person who was stealing from you.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“I saw their face.””
My heart began racing.
“Tell me.””
Elena's lips parted.
But before she could answer, every security alarm in the mansion activated.
A violent sound filled the halls.
Everyone jumped.
James looked at his monitor.
His face changed.
“What?””
I turned.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
“Someone accessed the main security system.””
“From where?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Inside.””
My stomach tightened.
“Inside the mansion?””
He nodded.
The screens showed camera feeds.
The main hall.
The courtyard.
The east wing.
All of them flickering.
Someone was moving through the house.
Someone who knew exactly where the cameras were.
Elena stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“They found us.””
The doors to the red room suddenly locked.
Everyone turned.
James rushed toward them.
“They're electronically sealed.””
“How?””
He looked at the control panel.
“Someone with administrator access.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Administrator access.
Only a handful of people had it.
Including me.
Richard.
Andrew.
And one other person.
Someone I trusted with everything.
Someone who had worked in my home for twenty years.
My personal assistant.
Claire Morgan.
The door speaker suddenly clicked.
A woman's voice filled the room.
“Carter.””
Everyone froze.
I knew that voice.
Claire.
My assistant.
The person who scheduled my meetings.
Handled my private documents.
Knew every detail of my life.
Elena's face went pale.
“Her.””
I looked at Elena.
“You know her?””
Elena nodded.
“She was there that night.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
The voice continued.
“Carter, I really hoped you wouldn't make this difficult.””
I walked toward the speaker.
“Claire.””
A soft laugh came through.
“I knew you would figure it out eventually.””
My hands clenched.
“You were involved.””
Silence.
Then:
“Don't make it sound so dramatic.””
The calmness in her voice was terrifying.
“You have no idea how much work it took to keep this family together.””
I stared at the speaker.
“Where is my security team?””
Another laugh.
“Busy.””
James checked his radio.
Nothing.
Claire had cut communication.
Elena moved closer to me.
“Carter, listen carefully.””
I looked at her.
“She wants Maya.””
The room went silent.
The voice continued.
“Actually, I want the child.””
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Claire continued calmly.
“You don't understand what Maya represents.””
I looked at my daughter.
“She is a little girl.””
“No.””
Claire's voice became colder.
“She is proof.””
Proof.
Of what?
Elena grabbed my arm.
“Carter.””
I looked at her.
“There is something you don't know.””
The fear in her voice scared me.
“What?””
Elena looked at Maya.
Then at me.
“The night Maya was born…”
She paused.
“I discovered she wasn't the only secret they were hiding.””
The room became silent.
My daughter looked between us.
“What secret?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Carter…”
The speaker clicked again.
Claire interrupted.
“Time is running out.””
A loud mechanical sound came from the door.
The lock began releasing.
James moved in front of us.
Elena grabbed Maya.
Titan lowered his body.
Ready.
And then Claire's voice came through one final time.
“You spent five years looking for Elena.””
A pause.
“But you never asked why someone wanted her daughter hidden.””
The door unlocked.
Slowly opening.
And standing outside…
was Claire.
Smiling.
But she wasn't alone.
Behind her stood several people from my own security team.
People I had trusted.
People who had protected this mansion for years.
Claire looked directly at me.
May you like
And said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Carter, meet the people who have been protecting your enemies all along.””
