Surprise

Chapter 3: The Room That Was Never Empty

I spent five years believing Elena had vanished from my life.

But standing in that bedroom, holding a hospital bracelet with Maya's name on it, I realized something far more painful.

Elena had never truly left me.

She had been trying to come back.

Someone had stopped her.

The photograph shook in my hand.

A newborn baby.

Elena holding her.

The date on the back matched the night she disappeared.

Five years earlier.

The night I thought I lost my wife.

The night I had searched every road, every city, every possible place where she could have been.

But the answer had been here.

Inside my own home.

“Daddy?””

Maya's small voice pulled me back.

I looked at her standing beside Titan.

She looked scared.

Not because of me.

Because she was watching me discover the truth she had carried alone.

I slowly lowered myself to her height.

“Maya…”

My voice broke.

“How long have you known about me?””

She looked down.

“Mommy told me about you.””

My heart tightened.

“What did she tell you?””

“That you were kind.””

I swallowed.

“She said you loved people even when they didn't deserve it.””

The words felt like Elena.

That was exactly something she would say.

She always saw the good in people.

Even when they hurt her.

Even when I didn't understand why.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Why didn't she come home?””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“She tried.””

The room became completely silent.

I stared at her.

“She tried?””

Maya nodded.

“Mommy said she tried many times.””

My hands clenched.

“Then why didn't I know?””

The little girl looked toward Richard.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Richard was standing near the doorway.

And for the first time in fifteen years, I saw fear in the eyes of the man I trusted most.

“Richard,” I said.

He didn't answer.

“Tell me.””

His jaw tightened.

“Carter…”

“No.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.””

The room went quiet.

James moved closer to me.

“Sir, should I ask everyone to leave?””

I kept my eyes on Richard.

“No.””

I wanted answers.

And I wanted them now.

Richard looked at Maya.

Then at the photograph.

Then he sighed.

“I didn't know about the child.””

The sentence made my anger rise.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I'm telling the truth.””

“You knew Elena was alive.””

Richard looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

“You knew.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“You knew my wife was alive.””

Richard didn't respond.

“You let me spend five years searching for her.””

“Carter—”

“You watched me bury a woman who wasn't dead.””

My hands shook.

“Why?””

Richard closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, he looked older.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

I pointed toward Maya.

“You call this protecting me?””

Richard stepped forward.

“Listen to me. Elena found something she wasn't supposed to find.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Richard.””

He looked at me.

“What did my wife find?””

Before he answered, the lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The bedroom went dark for three seconds.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Dim.

Unsettling.

James immediately reached for his radio.

“Security team, report.””

Static answered.

Then nothing.

His expression changed.

“That isn't normal.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“What happened?””

“Our cameras went offline.””

My stomach tightened.

“Since when?””

“Thirty seconds ago.””

Richard suddenly looked alarmed.

Not surprised.

Alarmed.

“You need to move Maya.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever broke into this room isn't looking for the box.””

His eyes moved toward Maya.

“They're looking for her.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

I stepped between Richard and the child.

“You knew.””

Richard shook his head.

“Not about Maya.””

“Then what did you know?””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Someone has been waiting for Elena's secret to come back.””

The hallway suddenly filled with a sound.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

James whispered:

“Someone is upstairs.””

My mansion had always been impossible to enter without permission.

Every entrance had cameras.

Every hallway had sensors.

Every employee had identification.

But someone was inside.

Someone who had bypassed everything.

Titan immediately lifted his head.

A low growl came from his chest.

Not toward Maya.

Toward the hallway.

I had never heard Titan make that sound before.

Not even when strangers approached the estate.

This was different.

This was recognition.

I looked at the dog.

“Titan?””

He moved forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then he stopped at the doorway.

His ears lowered.

He looked confused.

Almost hurt.

Like he smelled someone he remembered.

I stepped beside him.

“What is it?””

Titan looked back at me.

Then toward the darkness.

And suddenly, he walked into the hallway.

“Maya stays here,” I ordered.

But she grabbed my hand.

“No.””

I looked down.

“You need to stay with James.””

She shook her head.

“Titan is going to find her.””

My heart skipped.

“Find who?””

Maya whispered:

“Mommy.””

Nobody moved.

The words hung in the air.

James looked at me.

“Sir…”

I didn't answer.

Because part of me wanted to believe her.

And another part of me was terrified.

Because if Elena was really here…

why had she stayed hidden?

I followed Titan down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

The mansion that once felt like home now felt like a place full of secrets.

We reached the old study.

The door was slightly open.

Titan stopped.

I pushed it open.

Inside, everything looked untouched.

Except for the desk.

There was an envelope sitting on top.

My name was written across it.

Again.

Carter.

I approached slowly.

James stayed behind me.

“Could be a trap.””

“I know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Three sentences.

That's all.

But they changed everything.

Carter,

If you are reading this, then Maya found Titan.

That means I couldn't come back.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

The people who took me know about her.

They know about you.

And they know the truth about what happened that night.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Below the message was a name.

A name I never expected to see.

A name that made Richard's warning suddenly make sense.

Victor Hale.

Richard's older brother.

The man who had died six years ago.

I stared at the name.

“That can't be right.””

James looked over my shoulder.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

I couldn't answer.

Because I knew exactly who he was.

Victor had been my biggest competitor.

A ruthless businessman who spent years trying to destroy Carter Industries.

He disappeared after a scandal involving financial crimes.

Everyone believed he died overseas.

But Elena's letter said otherwise.

I turned around.

“Richard.””

He was still standing near the bedroom doorway.

His face changed when he saw the name.

“You knew.””

Richard looked down.

“I knew he was alive.””

My chest tightened.

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Because Victor wasn't the only person involved.””

Silence.

I felt the anger disappear.

Replaced by something worse.

Fear.

“What are you saying?””

Richard slowly walked closer.

“Elena didn't disappear because someone wanted your money.””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“She disappeared because she discovered the person who was closest to you was betraying you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Richard opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, every light in the mansion suddenly shut off.

The emergency lights died.

Complete darkness.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Nobody knew that number.

Because the call wasn't coming from outside.

It was coming from Elena's old bedroom.

The locked room.

The room where Maya's hospital bracelet had been hidden.

James slowly pulled out his phone.

“Sir…”

I looked at him.

His face was pale.

“Your wife's old phone number is calling.””

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

I stared toward the hallway.

Five years.

Five years without a single sign.

And now Elena's number was calling me from inside my own mansion.

I answered.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a woman's trembling voice whispered:

“Carter…”

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

I had spent five years trying to hear it again.

“Elena?””

A quiet breath came through the speaker.

Then she said:

“You found Maya.””

I couldn't speak.

Tears filled my eyes.

“Elena… where are you?””

There was a pause.

And when she answered, her voice was full of fear.

“I'm close.””

My heart stopped.

“Close where?””

Another pause.

Then Elena whispered:

“Close enough to see who is standing behind you.””

Slowly…

I turned around.

And everyone in the room went silent.

Because behind me…

May you like

standing in the darkness…

was someone who had been in my mansion the entire time.
