Surprise

Chapter 8

I stared at David's photograph until my vision blurred.

David Harris had been my best friend since college.

He stood beside me at my wedding to Rachel.

He helped carry my father's coffin.

He drove me home after Rachel's funeral.

He was the person I called when Lily had a fever and I didn't know what to do.

He knew everything about my life.

My fears.

My grief.

My loneliness.

And apparently, he knew Richard Coleman.

I looked at Detective Carter.

"That has to be a mistake."

She said nothing.

I shook my head.

"David would never betray me."

Rachel touched my arm.

"Marcus..."

I pulled away.

Not because I was angry with her.

Because I couldn't bear another betrayal.

Vanessa had been a lie.

My wife's death had been a lie.

My house had hidden a prison.

Now the one person I trusted most might have helped destroy my family.

I felt as though the ground beneath me had disappeared.

Detective Carter spoke gently.

"We don't know his involvement yet."

I looked up.

"Then find out."

She nodded.

"We will."

That afternoon, investigators questioned David.

At first, he denied knowing Richard.

Then police showed him the photograph.

His story changed.

He admitted attending several meetings with Richard years earlier.

He claimed they were related to business investments.

But financial records showed unexplained payments.

Money had moved from Richard-controlled accounts into a consulting company David owned.

I listened as Detective Carter explained.

My chest tightened.

"How much?"

"More than six hundred thousand dollars over several years."

I covered my face.

Six hundred thousand.

David had borrowed money from me during difficult times.

I had helped him pay medical bills.

I had supported his business.

All while he secretly received money from the man who destroyed my family.

I felt sick.

"Did he know Rachel was alive?"

The detective hesitated.

"We're investigating that."

I stood.

"I need to talk to him."

"Not yet."

"Detective—"

"Marcus, please. Let us establish what happened."

I stopped.

She was right.

My anger couldn't be allowed to damage the investigation.

But the pain was unbearable.

That night, I sat alone outside the secure house.

Rachel found me staring at the sky.

She sat beside me.

"You haven't eaten."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps telling me that."

She smiled sadly.

"Because we're worried about you."

I looked at her.

"How do I trust anyone again?"

Rachel was quiet for a moment.

Then she took my hand.

"One person at a time."

I shook my head.

"Vanessa lived in our house."

"I know."

"David held Lily when she was a baby."

Rachel's eyes filled.

"I know."

"I let them close enough to hurt us."

She squeezed my hand.

"Marcus, they made those choices. Not you."

I looked away.

She continued.

"You can learn to protect yourself without believing everyone is dangerous."

I took a shaky breath.

"How?"

"By watching what people do. By listening when something feels wrong. By letting trust grow slowly."

I looked at her.

She smiled.

"And by remembering that some people have never stopped loving you."

I pulled her into my arms.

For a long time, we sat quietly.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Carter.

Her voice was urgent.

"Marcus, David has agreed to cooperate."

My heart pounded.

"What did he say?"

"He admitted helping Richard locate the original archive records."

I closed my eyes.

"And Rachel?"

A pause.

Then she answered.

"He says he knew she was alive."

The words crushed me.

I couldn't speak.

Detective Carter continued.

"Marcus?"

I swallowed.

"How long?"

"According to his statement, he learned the truth approximately three years ago."

I stared into the darkness.

Three years.

For three years, my best friend had known my wife was alive.

He had watched me grieve.

He had watched Lily cry for her mother.

And he had said nothing.

I felt something inside me break.

"Why?"

The detective's voice softened.

"He says Richard threatened to expose his financial crimes."

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

Money again.

Fear again.

Cowardice again.

I had lost five years with Rachel because people cared more about protecting themselves than doing what was right.

Detective Carter continued.

"David also provided information about Richard's current location."

I sat up.

"Where?"

"A private warehouse near the state line."

My heart raced.

"Are you going there?"

"Officers are coordinating an operation."

I looked toward Rachel.

She was watching me carefully.

I wanted to demand updates every minute.

I wanted to drive there myself.

But I knew that would be reckless.

I had Lily to protect.

And Rachel.

I couldn't let anger take me away from them.

"Please be careful," I told the detective.

"We will."

After the call, I entered the house.

Lily was sitting beside Rachel, reading a picture book.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"Daddy!"

I sat beside them.

Rachel leaned against my shoulder.

Lily climbed into my lap.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then my daughter asked,

"Can Mommy stay with us forever?"

I looked at Rachel.

Her eyes filled.

I hugged Lily.

"That's what we're working toward, sweetheart."

She frowned.

"Why can't you just say yes?"

I kissed her forehead.

"Because sometimes grown-ups have things to work through. But we're going to do everything we can to stay together."

Lily thought about that.

Then she nodded.

"Okay."

She looked at Rachel.

"Can we go to the zoo?"

Rachel laughed through tears.

"I'd love that."

"And can Daddy come?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

Lily grinned.

"Then we're a family again."

I held her tighter.

We already were.

Even when separated.

Even when afraid.

Even when we didn't know the truth.

Love had never stopped connecting us.

Later that night, Detective Carter called again.

Richard had been arrested.

Officers found him at the warehouse along with documents, electronic devices, and evidence connected to the kidnapping.

He had attempted to destroy several records before they arrived.

But investigators recovered enough to continue the case.

I felt relief wash through me.

Then the detective said something unexpected.

"Marcus, Richard claims Vanessa wasn't acting under his orders when she began dating you."

I frowned.

"What?"

"He says their relationship deteriorated years ago."

My stomach tightened.

"Then why did she do it?"

"That's what we're trying to establish."

I looked toward the hallway.

Rachel and Lily were asleep.

I lowered my voice.

"Detective, what are you saying?"

She paused.

"Vanessa may have had her own plan."

I felt a chill.

"What plan?"

"We recovered messages suggesting she intended to take control of the estate after marrying you."

I stared.

"I already suspected that."

"There's more."

My heart began pounding.

"What?"

"She was also making arrangements to become Lily's legal guardian if something happened to you."

The room seemed to tilt.

I gripped the phone.

"Something happened to me?"

May you like

The detective's voice became serious.

"Marcus, we believe Vanessa was preparing for your death."
