Chapter 1

The slap was so hard that my head snapped sideways.
For one terrible second, I couldn't hear anything except the ringing in my ears.
Then my mother's voice exploded across the kitchen.
"You selfish little liar!"
I stumbled backward, pressing one trembling hand against my burning cheek.
My name is Maya Bennett.
I'm seventeen years old.
And until that afternoon, I had never imagined my mother could look at me with so much hatred.
"Mom..."
"Don't you dare call me that!"
Her burgundy dress moved sharply as she stepped toward me again.
I flinched.
I couldn't help it.
My body reacted before my mind could catch up.
Behind her, my younger sister Lily was sitting on the glossy kitchen floor.
She was sixteen, wearing a pale-pink top and jeans.
A glass lay beside her, with water spreading across the white marble tiles.
Lily was crying.
But not because I had hurt her.
Because she'd slipped while reaching for the glass.
I'd been standing beside the kitchen island when it happened.
I'd actually rushed toward her to help.
Yet somehow, within seconds, I had become the villain.
"You pushed your sister!" Mom screamed.
I shook my head desperately.
"No! I didn't touch her!"
"Stop lying to me!"
Tears burned my eyes.
I looked toward Lily.
She was staring at us, her face pale.
"Lily, please tell her!"
But before my sister could answer, Mom raised her hand again.
I instinctively stepped backward.
Then a voice thundered from behind us.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?"
My father stood in the kitchen doorway.
Marcus Bennett.
Forty-two years old.
Tall, broad-shouldered, and still wearing the navy suit he'd put on for work that morning.
His briefcase slipped from his hand.
It struck the floor with a heavy thud.
He looked at my cheek.
Then at my mother.
Then back at me.
His expression changed instantly.
"Denise!"
Mom turned.
For a moment, she looked startled.
Then she straightened.
"Marcus, thank goodness you're home."
Dad walked toward us.
"Why did you hit her?"
His voice was low.
That frightened me more than shouting.
Mom pointed at me.
"Because she knocked Lily down!"
I stared at her.
"That's not true!"
Mom whipped around.
"Maya, I am warning you!"
Dad stepped between us.
"Enough."
The room went silent.
He looked at my face.
My cheek was already swelling.
His jaw tightened.
"Did you slap her?"
Mom folded her arms.
"She attacked her sister."
"That wasn't my question."
Mom looked away.
Dad's voice hardened.
"Denise. Did you hit Maya?"
"Yes, because somebody needs to discipline her!"
I started crying.
Not because my cheek hurt.
Although it did.
I cried because my own mother had decided I was guilty before asking a single question.
Dad turned toward me.
"Maya, sweetheart, are you okay?"
I tried to answer.
But my throat closed.
He reached toward my cheek.
I flinched.
His expression crumpled.
"I'm not going to hurt you."
That made me cry harder.
He slowly lowered his hand.
Then turned toward Mom.
"Did anyone actually see what happened?"
She scoffed.
"Marcus, Lily is sitting on the floor!"
"That tells me she fell. It doesn't tell me Maya pushed her."
Mom's face tightened.
"Are you seriously defending her?"
Dad looked toward Lily.
"Sweetheart, what happened?"
Lily wiped her eyes.
Her hands were shaking.
Mom immediately stepped forward.
"Lily, tell your father what your sister did."
Something about her voice made Lily freeze.
I recognized that tone.
I'd heard it before.
Whenever Mom wanted a particular answer.
Whenever the truth was inconvenient.
Whenever she needed one of us to take responsibility for something she couldn't control.
Lily looked at me.
Then at Dad.
Then slowly raised her hand.
"Mom..."
Her voice trembled.
"Maya didn't push me."
Mom went completely still.
"What?"
Lily began crying harder.
"I slipped."
Dad crouched beside her.
"Take your time, baby."
Lily nodded.
"I was reaching for the glass. My sock slid on the floor."
She looked toward me.
"Maya was trying to help me."
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Mom stared at Lily.
Then at me.
For the first time, her anger disappeared.
But what replaced it wasn't regret.
It was fear.
Dad slowly stood.
He looked at Mom.
"You hit my daughter without even asking what happened?"
Mom opened her mouth.
"Marcus, I thought—"
"You thought what?"
His voice cracked.
"That Maya was guilty because you decided she was?"
Mom shook her head.
"It happened so quickly."
I wiped my face.
My cheek was throbbing.
Dad looked at me.
"Maya, come here."
I hesitated.
Then stepped toward him.
He put an arm around my shoulders.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?"
I shook my head.
He looked devastated.
Mom took a step closer.
"Maya, sweetheart, I didn't mean—"
I backed away.
The movement happened automatically.
Mom stopped.
Her eyes widened.
Dad noticed.
So did Lily.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Dad said something I'd never heard him say before.
"Denise, stay away from her."
Mom looked offended.
"Marcus!"
He shook his head.
"Not another step."
I stared at the floor.
Part of me wanted to disappear.
Part of me wanted to scream.
And another part wanted to protect Mom from Dad's anger.
That was the strangest thing.
She had hurt me.
Yet I still felt responsible for making sure she didn't get in trouble.
Dad gently touched my shoulder.
"Maya, you can tell me the truth."
I looked up.
His eyes were wet.
"Has something like this happened before?"
My heart stopped.
Mom's expression changed.
I could feel her watching me.
Waiting.
Warning me without saying a word.
I remembered the pantry door.
The broken picture frame.
The night she'd grabbed my wrist so hard that I couldn't hold a pencil properly the next morning.
The birthday dinner when she'd called me a liar in front of our relatives.
All the times she'd told me nobody would believe me.
I swallowed.
Then whispered, "Dad..."
He leaned closer.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
My voice broke.
"This isn't the first time."
Dad went completely still.
Behind him, Mom's face drained of color.
Lily covered her mouth.
May you like
I looked at my father through tears.
And realized that the secret I'd spent years protecting was finally about to come out.
