Chapter 5

I thought my heart would stop when Detective Carter said those words.
For five years, I had dreamed of hearing that Rachel was alive.
But now that the possibility was real, I was terrified.
What if they were wrong?
What if someone was pretending to be her?
What if I allowed myself to hope, only to lose her again?
Detective Carter ended the call.
I stood.
"Where is she?"
"At a medical facility outside Macon."
I stared.
"Macon?"
She nodded.
"A woman matching Rachel's description has been receiving treatment under another name."
My hands shook.
"Who contacted you?"
"The facility's administrator. After receiving our inquiry, she noticed similarities in the photographs."
I looked at Thomas.
He was crying quietly.
"Is it her?"
He shook his head.
"I haven't seen her."
I turned back to the detective.
"Take me there."
She hesitated.
"We need to confirm her identity first."
"Please."
My voice cracked.
"I've waited five years."
She studied me.
Then nodded.
"We'll arrange a controlled visit if the woman agrees."
The drive felt endless.
I sat in the passenger seat of a police vehicle, staring through the windshield.
I called Jasmine.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus?"
"They might have found Rachel."
Silence.
Then I heard her gasp.
"What?"
"I don't know for certain."
Jasmine began crying.
"Oh, God."
I closed my eyes.
"Please don't tell Lily yet."
"I won't."
"I can't let her hope until we know."
My sister's voice trembled.
"I understand."
When we reached the facility, my legs barely supported me.
Detective Carter spoke with the administrator.
I waited in a quiet room.
Every second stretched.
Then the door opened.
A woman entered.
And my world stopped.
Rachel.
She was thinner.
Her hair was shorter.
A faint scar crossed her forehead.
But I knew her face.
I knew those eyes.
Those beautiful brown eyes I had spent five years trying to remember without crying.
She stopped in the doorway.
Her lips trembled.
"Marcus?"
I couldn't speak.
She covered her mouth.
Then she began crying.
I took one step toward her.
"Rachel?"
She nodded.
"It's me."
I crossed the room.
She ran into my arms.
And the moment I felt her heartbeat against mine, I broke.
I sobbed like a child.
I held her so tightly that I was afraid to let go.
She buried her face in my shoulder.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I shook my head.
"You're here."
"I tried to come back."
"You're here."
She cried harder.
"I tried, Marcus. I swear I tried."
I kissed her forehead.
Her cheeks.
Her hair.
I needed to know she was real.
That I wasn't dreaming.
That the woman I had buried in my heart was standing in front of me.
Finally, we sat together.
I held her hand.
I refused to release it.
"Where have you been?"
Rachel looked toward Detective Carter.
Then back at me.
"It's complicated."
"Tell me."
She took a shaky breath.
"After I discovered the documents, Richard Coleman threatened me."
My jaw tightened.
"He said he'd destroy our family if I exposed him."
I listened without interrupting.
Rachel continued.
"I went to meet someone who promised to help. But it was a trap."
My stomach twisted.
"What happened?"
"Two men forced me into a vehicle."
Her hands began trembling.
"They told me you'd be killed if I tried to escape."
I squeezed her fingers.
She looked down.
"I was held at several locations. They moved me whenever I learned too much about where I was."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I kept thinking about Lily."
I couldn't breathe.
"She was only two."
Rachel nodded.
"I imagined her growing up without me."
Her voice broke.
"I thought it would kill me."
I pulled her close.
She cried against my chest.
When she could speak again, she continued.
"About three weeks ago, I escaped during a transfer."
I stared at her.
"How?"
"I found a moment when the driver stopped. I ran."
She swallowed.
"I reached a gas station. A woman helped me call for assistance."
"Why didn't you come straight home?"
Rachel looked frightened.
"Because I didn't know whether Richard still controlled people around you."
My stomach dropped.
She continued.
"I tried calling Thomas because I trusted him."
"And he was kidnapped."
Her face went pale.
"What?"
I explained what happened beneath the pool.
Rachel began shaking.
"Oh, no."
I squeezed her hand.
"He's alive."
She covered her face.
"Thank God."
Detective Carter asked several questions.
Rachel answered as much as she could.
She explained that the facility had admitted her for treatment after she was found frightened, exhausted, and without identification.
She had given a shortened version of her name because she feared being traced.
Her memories were fragmented.
But she remembered enough to identify several locations and people involved in her captivity.
Then she looked at me.
"Marcus, there's something else."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?"
"Richard didn't act alone."
I nodded slowly.
"I know about Vanessa."
Rachel's expression changed.
"Vanessa?"
I told her everything.
How we met.
How she moved into the mansion.
How she supervised the renovation.
How she pressured me to marry her.
Rachel looked horrified.
"Marcus, Richard has a daughter named Vanessa."
"I know."
She grabbed my arm.
"She was involved."
My blood ran cold.
"How?"
Rachel's voice trembled.
"She visited me."
I stared.
"What?"
"Twice."
My hands curled into fists.
Rachel continued.
"The first time, she told me you had moved on."
I couldn't speak.
"She said you were happy. That Lily had forgotten me."
Rachel began crying.
"She showed me photographs of the three of you."
I felt sick.
My daughter.
My beautiful little girl.
Vanessa had used photographs of Lily to torture her mother.
Rachel looked directly into my eyes.
"She told me that if I came home, I'd destroy Lily's happiness."
I shook my head.
"Rachel, she lied."
"I know that now."
I held her face gently.
"Lily never forgot you."
Rachel's lips trembled.
"Does she remember me?"
I began crying.
"Every day."
Rachel covered her mouth.
I continued.
"She keeps your picture beside her bed. She still asks what your laugh sounded like."
Rachel sobbed.
I pulled her into my arms.
Then she whispered,
"Can I see her?"
I nodded.
"Of course."
But I also knew we had to be careful.
Lily had spent five years believing her mother was dead.
Seeing Rachel again would change everything.
I wanted my daughter supported through every moment.
Detective Carter agreed to help arrange a reunion with a child psychologist present.
Rachel squeezed my hand.
"There's one thing I need before that."
"What?"
She looked toward the detective.
"I need you to arrest Vanessa."
My jaw tightened.
"Why?"
Rachel swallowed.
"Because she promised something the last time she visited me."
I felt a chill.
"What did she promise?"
May you like
Rachel's eyes filled with terror.
"She said that if I ever escaped, she would make sure Lily disappeared next."
