Surprise

Chapter 6

I had never felt fear like the fear I felt after Rachel mentioned Lily.

Not when I buried my wife.

Not when I found a stranger behind the pool doors.

Not even when I learned Vanessa had been living a lie.

This was different.

My daughter was seven years old.

She trusted me to protect her.

And for two years, I had allowed someone dangerous into her home.

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the floor.

"I need to call Jasmine."

Detective Carter nodded.

"Do it."

My sister answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?"

"Where's Lily?"

"Upstairs. She's coloring."

I exhaled.

"Keep her there."

Jasmine's voice changed.

"What's wrong?"

"Lock the doors. Don't let anyone in unless the police confirm who they are."

"Marcus, you're scaring me."

I closed my eyes.

"I'm sorry."

I told her enough to explain the danger.

Then I asked her to call the officers already assigned to watch the house.

Jasmine agreed.

Before hanging up, she whispered,

"Did you find Rachel?"

I looked at my wife.

She was watching me with tear-filled eyes.

"Yes."

My sister began crying.

"She's alive?"

"She's alive."

I could hear Jasmine struggling to breathe.

Then she whispered,

"Thank God."

I swallowed.

"But please don't tell Lily yet."

"I understand."

After the call, Detective Carter contacted her team.

Vanessa had already been questioned.

She denied knowing anything about the underground chamber.

But investigators had found payment records linking her to the renovation contractor.

The company had been registered through a chain of businesses connected to Richard Coleman.

Vanessa had not merely hired a pool company.

She had arranged for the hidden chamber to remain accessible.

And someone had used it to imprison Thomas.

I stared at the detective.

"How could she bring those men into my house?"

"We're investigating exactly who had access."

I shook my head.

"She knew Lily played near that pool."

My voice broke.

"She knew."

Rachel reached for my hand.

"Marcus."

I turned toward her.

She looked at me gently.

"You didn't know."

I lowered my head.

"But I should have."

She shook her head.

"People who deceive us work very hard to make the lies believable."

I looked at her.

Five years of captivity had changed her.

She was thinner.

More cautious.

But her kindness was still there.

She was comforting me after everything she had endured.

I sat beside her again.

"I'm sorry."

Rachel squeezed my fingers.

"Don't apologize for loving someone who lied to you."

I began crying.

She pulled me close.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Later that afternoon, Detective Carter returned with new information.

Investigators had recovered security footage from a commercial property linked to Richard.

It showed Vanessa meeting with two men suspected of participating in Rachel's kidnapping.

The meeting occurred just weeks before Vanessa first approached me.

The implication was devastating.

Our relationship had likely been planned.

The charity event.

The first date.

The romantic dinners.

The trips.

The way she slowly became part of Lily's life.

Every memory now felt poisoned.

I remembered Vanessa telling me she loved children.

I remembered her buying Lily expensive dresses.

I remembered her offering to help with bedtime routines.

Then I remembered the little things.

Lily becoming quiet when Vanessa entered a room.

The way she apologized for spilling water.

The way she asked permission before touching her own toys.

I had mistaken fear for good manners.

And that realization nearly destroyed me.

Detective Carter looked at me.

"Mr. Williams, we need Lily to remain somewhere secure."

I nodded.

"Jasmine's house?"

"For now, with appropriate security."

I agreed.

Then Rachel spoke.

"Can I see my daughter soon?"

The detective looked at her gently.

"We're arranging it."

Rachel nodded.

But tears rolled down her cheeks.

I understood.

She had already lost five years.

Every additional hour felt unbearable.

The following morning, a child psychologist named Dr. Allison Price met with us.

She explained how to prepare Lily for the reunion.

We agreed to speak honestly.

Slowly.

Without overwhelming her.

We would not make promises about things we couldn't control.

And we would let Lily decide how close she wanted to come.

I returned to Jasmine's house that afternoon.

My daughter ran toward me.

"Daddy!"

I lifted her into my arms.

She hugged my neck.

"Did you find out who was behind the door?"

I kissed her cheek.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"Was he okay?"

"He's getting better."

She smiled.

"I knew somebody was there."

I nodded.

"You were right."

Then her expression changed.

"Is Vanessa coming back?"

I felt my chest tighten.

"No, baby."

"Ever?"

I took a breath.

"She's not going to live with us anymore."

Lily looked down.

Then she whispered,

"Good."

I stared at her.

"Sweetheart?"

She began twisting one of her braids.

"She used to say you wouldn't love me if I made trouble."

My heart cracked.

"What?"

"She said you wanted a new family."

I pulled her close.

"Oh, Lily."

She began crying.

"I tried to be good."

I held her tightly.

"You were always good."

She shook her head.

"Sometimes I made mistakes."

"Everybody makes mistakes."

I kissed her forehead.

"Nothing you do could ever make me stop loving you."

She clung to me.

I waited until she stopped crying.

Then I sat beside her on the couch.

"Sweetheart, there's something important I need to tell you."

She looked up.

I took her hands.

"Remember how we've talked about Mommy?"

She nodded.

Her eyes grew serious.

"Rachel?"

I swallowed.

"Yes."

"Is she in heaven?"

My throat tightened.

I took a slow breath.

"Baby, we believed Mommy had died because that's what we were told."

Lily stared at me.

"But we recently learned something different."

She looked confused.

"What?"

I felt tears fill my eyes.

"Mommy is alive."

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered,

"No."

I nodded.

"It's true."

Her lips trembled.

"Really alive?"

"Really."

She began crying.

I pulled her into my arms.

"She's been trying to find her way home."

Lily looked at me.

"Can I see her?"

I nodded.

"Yes, baby."

She pressed her hands against her mouth.

Then she whispered something I would never forget.

"Does Mommy still know my name?"

I broke down.

"Oh, sweetheart."

I held her face.

"She never forgot your name."

Lily cried against my chest.

And I knew that whatever happened next, our lives would never be the same.

That evening, Detective Carter called.

Her voice was urgent.

"Marcus, we have a problem."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Richard Coleman has disappeared."

I closed my eyes.

"Where was he?"

"At a property outside Atlanta. His surveillance detail lost contact with him."

I gripped the phone.

"Do you think he's coming after Lily?"

"We're taking precautions."

I looked toward my daughter.

She was asleep beside Jasmine.

I lowered my voice.

"Detective, please tell me what you know."

She hesitated.

Then she answered.

"We recovered a message sent from Richard's phone."

"What message?"

May you like

Her voice became colder.

"It said, 'If I can't have the Williams estate, Marcus won't have a family to leave it to.'"
