Surprise

Chapter 7

I stared at my sleeping daughter while Detective Carter repeated the threat.

My hands went numb.

For years, Richard Coleman had blamed my family for his downfall.

Now he was threatening the only people I had left.

I lowered my voice.

"Where is Vanessa?"

"She's under arrest."

I closed my eyes.

"For what?"

"Charges relating to the unlawful confinement of Thomas Reed and the broader conspiracy. The investigation is continuing."

I exhaled.

At least she couldn't walk into Jasmine's house pretending nothing had happened.

But Richard was still missing.

And I knew he was dangerous.

Detective Carter continued.

"We're moving Rachel to a secure location. We recommend that you and Lily remain under protection."

I agreed immediately.

I didn't care how much it cost.

I didn't care how inconvenient it was.

I wasn't taking chances with my daughter's life.

The next morning, we relocated to a secure property used for protected witnesses and victims.

Jasmine came with us.

Rachel joined us later that day.

I watched her enter the living room.

She stopped when she saw Lily.

My daughter was sitting on the floor with a coloring book.

For a moment, Rachel couldn't move.

Her hands trembled.

Her eyes filled with tears.

I stepped beside Lily.

"Sweetheart?"

She looked up.

Then she saw Rachel.

Everything became silent.

Rachel knelt slowly.

"Hi, Lily."

My daughter stared.

Her lips parted.

"Mommy?"

Rachel began crying.

"Yes, baby."

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

"It's Mommy."

She turned back.

Rachel held out her arms but didn't move closer.

"I've missed you so much."

Lily stood.

Then she ran.

She threw herself into Rachel's arms.

And the sound that came from my wife's throat nearly broke me.

A sob.

A laugh.

A cry of relief.

All at once.

Rachel held Lily tightly.

"My baby."

Lily buried her face against her mother's neck.

"Mommy, I thought you went to heaven."

Rachel cried harder.

"I know, sweetheart."

"Why didn't you come home?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"I wanted to."

Her voice trembled.

"I tried every day."

Lily pulled back.

"Did you forget our house?"

"No."

"Did you forget Daddy?"

Rachel shook her head.

"Never."

Lily touched her face.

"Did you forget me?"

Rachel began sobbing.

"Never, baby. Not for one second."

I turned away because I couldn't control my tears.

Jasmine placed a hand on my shoulder.

We stood together, watching the reunion we had believed impossible.

For the first time in five years, my daughter was holding her mother.

And my wife was finally holding the child she had been forced to leave.

Later, Lily fell asleep with her head resting on Rachel's lap.

Rachel refused to move.

She sat quietly, stroking our daughter's braids.

I knelt beside her.

"You can rest, you know."

She smiled through tears.

"I've waited five years for this."

I kissed her forehead.

"Then stay as long as you want."

She looked at me.

"Marcus, I'm scared."

My chest tightened.

"Of Richard?"

She nodded.

"And of everything after this."

I sat beside her.

"What do you mean?"

She looked down at Lily.

"Five years is a long time."

I understood.

She wasn't only afraid of the man who hurt her.

She was afraid she no longer belonged in her own family.

I took her hand.

"Rachel, you don't have to become the woman you were five years ago."

She looked at me.

"We'll learn who we are now."

Tears filled her eyes.

"And if it's difficult?"

"Then we'll work through it."

I kissed her hand.

"Together."

She leaned against me.

For the first time since our reunion, I felt her body relax.

But our peace didn't last.

That evening, Detective Carter arrived with serious news.

Richard's abandoned vehicle had been found near a private airfield.

Investigators believed he was attempting to leave the state.

They had also recovered information from his financial records.

He had transferred large sums of money into accounts controlled by associates.

Some of those funds came from companies connected to my family's stolen business assets.

Detective Carter placed several documents on the table.

"Your parents' original records may prove Richard's involvement in a much larger financial scheme."

I stared.

"How much money?"

"Potentially millions."

I shook my head.

"My mother always said Richard was dishonest. But I didn't know it was this bad."

Rachel spoke quietly.

"That's why he wanted the archive."

I turned toward her.

She nodded.

"The documents your father collected could expose everything."

My stomach tightened.

"Are they still beneath the pool?"

Detective Carter answered.

"Some were recovered. Others may be missing."

I stared at her.

"Missing?"

She nodded.

"Thomas says there was a second secured compartment."

I felt a chill.

"Where?"

"Behind the archive wall."

Rachel looked frightened.

I remembered the old wooden doors.

The rusty handles.

The hidden chamber.

I had thought finding Thomas was the end of that mystery.

Instead, it was only the beginning.

Detective Carter continued.

"We believe Richard was trying to locate the remaining records before you discovered the chamber."

I looked at Rachel.

"Did you know about the second compartment?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Then she hesitated.

"Wait."

I leaned forward.

"What?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"My father-in-law showed me something shortly before he died."

I froze.

"My dad?"

She nodded.

"He gave me a small metal box."

My heart pounded.

"Where is it?"

Rachel looked at me.

"I hid it."

"Where?"

She swallowed.

"In Lily's nursery."

My stomach dropped.

The nursery had been converted into a playroom after Rachel disappeared.

Vanessa had supervised that renovation too.

"Rachel, what was inside the box?"

She shook her head.

"I never opened it."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Your father made me promise to keep it safe until the right time."

My voice cracked.

"What right time?"

Rachel looked directly into my eyes.

"When someone came looking for the doors."

My blood ran cold.

Detective Carter immediately contacted her team.

The mansion remained secured as an investigation scene.

Officers searched Lily's old nursery.

They found a concealed compartment behind a built-in bookshelf.

Inside was the metal box.

But it had been opened.

And it was empty.

Except for one thing.

A photograph.

It showed Richard Coleman standing beside Vanessa.

Between them stood a third person.

A man I recognized.

Someone who had attended my proposal party.

Someone I had trusted for nearly fifteen years.

My closest friend.

David Harris.

And on the back of the photograph were three handwritten words.

HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.
