Chapter 9: The Husband Who Chose Wrong

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself there was an explanation.
There had to be.
Daniel wouldn’t do this.
Not after everything.
Not after seeing me cry.
Not after feeling his daughter kick beneath my hand.
But the documents existed.
And his name was on them.
That was the only truth I had.
“Emma, listen to me.””
Daniel followed me into the bedroom.
“I didn’t file that.””
I stopped packing a small bag.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
“Then why is your name on the paperwork?””
He had no answer.
That was the problem.
Daniel always had an answer when he wanted me to understand him.
Now he had silence.
“I swear to you, I never wanted custody.””
I turned around.
“Then what did you want?””
His face changed.
“I wanted my mother to stop.””
“Stop what?””
“Stop being angry.””
I stared at him.
“So you signed something to make her happy?””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked broken.
“I signed a document without reading everything.””
My stomach dropped.
“You signed a legal document without reading it?””
He looked away.
“She said it was only to protect my rights as a father.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you believed her?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word was almost a whisper.
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
The exhaustion finally caught up with me.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“When were you going to tell me?””
“I was going to fix it.””
“When?””
No answer.
“After the baby was born?””
His face changed.
That was enough.
I covered my mouth.
Because suddenly I understood.
He wasn’t planning to tell me.
He was planning to handle it quietly.
Just like everything else.
Just like the company.
Just like his mother.
“You keep saying you’re protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But every decision you make removes my ability to protect myself.””
Daniel sat beside me.
“Emma, I love you.””
I moved away.
“I believe you.””
He looked surprised.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
“And that’s what makes this worse.””
Because loving someone who hurts you is more painful than hating someone who does.
The next morning, Margaret arrived with copies of the paperwork.
She placed them on the table.
“Daniel’s signature is real.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“I told you, I didn’t know what I signed.””
Margaret nodded.
“I believe you.””
I looked at her.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
That surprised both of us.
“But belief is not enough in court.””
Daniel lowered his head.
Margaret continued.
“We need evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“That Linda manipulated him.””
Daniel looked up.
“I can get that.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
He took out his phone.
“Because I still have her messages.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What messages?””
“The ones where she told me what to sign.””
Silence.
For the first time in days, Daniel looked like he was fighting with me instead of against me.
“I should have stopped her.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Margaret looked between us.
“Then we start there.””
That afternoon, Daniel handed over his phone.
Hundreds of messages.
Years of conversations.
And buried among them was something that made all of us go silent.
A message from Linda sent two months before the baby shower.
*Once the baby is born, we need to make sure Emma understands the child belongs to the Carter family too.*
Another message.
*The inheritance cannot stay completely under her control forever.*
Then the final one.
The one that changed everything.
*If Daniel hesitates, remind him that a father has rights.*
I read the words again.
And again.
My hands trembled.
Margaret quietly said:
“This is important.””
Daniel looked sick.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice was soft.
“You didn’t want to know.””
That hurt him.
But it was true.
The truth was finally standing in front of all of us.
Linda wasn’t just cruel.
She wasn’t just controlling.
She had been planning.
Planning for my daughter.
Planning for my inheritance.
Planning for the day she could claim everything I had built.
That evening, I received another message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*You found Linda’s plan. Good. But you still haven’t found the person who helped her create it.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
He was reading the same message over my shoulder.
Then another message appeared.
*Your mother-in-law wasn’t working alone.*
A second later, a name appeared.
A name I recognized.
May you like
A name that made Daniel go completely silent.
Because it was someone from his own family.
