Chapter 7: The Battle She Started

Daniel didn’t answer his phone.
He just stared at Linda’s name glowing on the screen until it stopped ringing.
The silence afterward felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.
I watched him carefully.
Not the way a wife watches her husband.
The way someone watches a stranger who has suddenly revealed a dangerous secret.
“She knows,” I repeated.
Daniel swallowed.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“What did she say?””
He looked away.
“She didn’t say anything.””
I almost smiled.
“Daniel, you’re a terrible liar.””
His jaw tightened.
“She asked where you were.””
“And?””
“And I told her I didn’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You lied to your mother?””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
Not because it was brave.
Because it was the first time he had ever hidden something from Linda instead of me.
I picked up the folder from the table.
“Why now?””
“What?””
“Why are you suddenly protecting information from her?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Because I’m realizing how far this has gone.””
I wanted to believe him.
A part of me desperately wanted to.
But trust was like glass.
Once shattered, even the pieces looked dangerous.
“You don’t get credit for noticing the fire after the house is already burning.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
That was the first honest thing he had said.
The next morning, I met with my attorney, Margaret Hill.
She had known my grandmother for years and was one of the few people I trusted completely.
When I walked into her office, she immediately stood.
“Emma.””
I hugged her.
For the first time in days, I felt like I wasn’t carrying everything alone.
“I need your help.””
She studied my face.
“Is this about the baby shower?””
“It’s about everything that came after.””
I placed the documents Claire gave me on her desk.
Margaret read through them carefully.
Her expression changed.
“This is serious.””
“I know.””
“Did Daniel know?””
I looked down.
“Yes.””
She closed the folder.
“Then we need to prepare.””
The word sounded terrifying.
Prepare.
Like we were going to war.
Maybe we were.
“What can she do?””
Margaret leaned back.
“Legally, she cannot simply take your child.””
I released a breath.
“But?””
“But she can create stress. She can make accusations. She can force you to spend time and money defending yourself.””
I nodded slowly.
“Exactly what Claire said.””
Margaret looked up.
“Claire Reynolds?””
“You know her?””
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“How?””
Margaret hesitated.
“She contacted me yesterday.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She asked if I was still representing your family.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted to understand why she reached out first.””
Margaret opened a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.
“She left this.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“I haven’t opened it.””
I slowly took the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten note.
*Linda doesn’t know everything. She thinks she is controlling the game, but someone else has been moving pieces behind her.*
I read it twice.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret looked concerned.
“I don’t know.””
For the first time, I realized something.
Linda might not be the only person planning something.
That afternoon, I returned home earlier than expected.
The front door was unlocked.
I immediately stopped.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
I walked inside.
The living room looked normal.
Too normal.
Then I heard voices from the office.
I moved quietly.
Daniel was inside.
With Linda.
“You promised me she wouldn’t find out,” Linda said.
My heart stopped.
Daniel sounded angry.
“I didn’t know Claire would contact her.””
“You should have controlled Claire.””
“I’m not controlling everyone!””
A pause.
Then Linda spoke.
“You’re forgetting who saved you.””
I stood frozen outside the door.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Mom, stop.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You were nothing when I stepped in.””
I felt my hands tighten.
“I built your company.””
Daniel replied quietly.
“Emma helped me.””
Linda laughed.
“Emma gave you money.””
A pause.
“That’s all.””
The words burned.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“She’s my wife.””
Linda became silent.
I waited.
This was the moment.
The moment Daniel would finally choose.
Then he said:
“But I need you to stop threatening her.””
Not defending me.
Not saying she was wrong.
Just asking her to stop threatening me.
It wasn’t enough.
Linda sighed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“She is going to destroy everything.””
I stepped into the doorway.
“No.””
Both of them turned.
Linda’s face changed.
Daniel went pale.
I looked directly at Linda.
“She’s going to expose everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Linda smiled.
A slow, confident smile.
“You think you know the truth.””
I held her gaze.
“I know enough.””
She walked toward me.
“You know nothing about this family.””
I didn’t move.
“Maybe.””
I looked at Daniel.
“But I know enough about betrayal.””
Linda stopped.
And then she said something I never expected.
“Ask your husband why your grandmother never trusted him.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What does she mean?””
Daniel’s face changed.
And that was when I knew.
May you like
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
