Chapter 14: The Choice He Couldn’t Undo

Nobody spoke after that.
Not Linda.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
The truth had finally entered the room.
And nobody knew how to live with it.
I looked at Daniel.
Four years of memories passed through my mind.
Our first apartment.
The night he proposed.
The day we found out we were having a baby.
Every moment I thought proved we were building something real.
Now I wondered how many moments had hidden things behind them.
“How long?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma…”
“How long did you know about the agreement?””
His voice cracked.
“Since before our wedding.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was sharper because I had trusted him completely.
“You let me marry you without telling me.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
He had no answer.
Again.
Always too late.
Linda crossed her arms.
“Don’t act like he’s the only one responsible.””
I turned toward her.
“You’re right.””
She looked surprised.
“You are.””
My voice became cold.
“He’s responsible.””
I pointed at Daniel.
“And you are responsible.””
Linda’s smile faded.
“But I am done carrying responsibility for everyone’s choices.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“I need to tell you something.””
I almost laughed.
“Another secret?””
His face showed regret.
“Yes.””
Of course.
Another secret.
He took a breath.
“Your grandmother didn’t just leave you the property.””
I looked at him.
“What else?””
“She created a trust.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What kind of trust?””
“A trust that activates when someone attempts to take control of your assets.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me this day might come.””
I looked down at the journal.
My grandmother had prepared for everything.
Even this.
“Where is the trust?””
Richard looked at Linda.
“She doesn’t know.””
Linda’s face changed.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Only Emma can access it.””
Linda stepped forward.
“You knew?””
“I discovered it too late.””
Her anger exploded.
“You ruined everything!””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You did.””
For the first time, I saw Linda lose control.
Not the dramatic anger.
Not the insults.
Real panic.
She looked at Daniel.
“Fix this.””
Daniel stared at her.
“No.””
The word was simple.
But it changed everything.
Linda froze.
“What did you say?””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“I said no.””
She laughed.
“You wouldn’t choose her over us.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
Then back at Linda.
“I already chose wrong once.””
Silence.
“I won’t do it again.””
Something inside me broke.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because for the first time, Daniel finally understood what his silence had cost.
Linda shook her head.
“You’re weak.””
Daniel replied quietly:
“No.””
He stepped away from her.
“I was.””
The room remained silent.
Then my phone rang.
Margaret.
I answered.
“Emma, you need to come immediately.””
“What happened?””
Her voice was tense.
“The trust documents were accessed.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Someone tried to activate a transfer.””
I looked around the room.
“Who?””
Margaret paused.
Then said:
“Someone with authorization.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
Then Linda.
Then Richard.
Everyone looked confused.
Except Evelyn.
She looked terrified.
“Emma…”
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“There is only one person who could have that authorization.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Your grandmother’s lawyer.””
I frowned.
“My grandmother’s lawyer died five years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Then Evelyn slowly shook her head.
“No.””
She whispered:
“He didn’t.””
A chill ran through me.
“What do you mean?””
May you like
Evelyn looked toward the door.
“Someone has been pretending to be dead.””
