Surprise

Chapter 12: The Hidden Room

The woman on the phone called herself Evelyn.

She refused to meet anywhere public.

That alone made me nervous.

But after everything I had learned, I understood one thing.

The truth rarely came from comfortable places.

She asked me to meet at an old storage building near the edge of town.

Daniel insisted on coming.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered something.

The enemy wasn’t always the person standing against me.

Sometimes it was the person standing beside me and pretending not to know.

So I let him come.

When we arrived, Evelyn was waiting.

She looked older than I expected.

Early sixties.

Gray hair.

A tired face.

But her eyes were sharp.

The moment she saw me, tears filled them.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

“How do you know me?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because I knew your grandmother before you were born.””

I stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

“I was her assistant.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Assistant?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your grandmother trusted very few people.””

She unlocked the storage room.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

My heart started racing.

“What is this?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Everything she collected.””

“About what?””

She opened one box.

“About people who wanted what belonged to you.””

Inside were copies of financial records.

Property research.

Emails.

My stomach tightened.

“She knew.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew Linda and Richard were interested in your assets.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why didn’t anyone tell us?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because your grandmother didn’t trust you.””

The words hit hard.

Daniel looked away.

I felt a strange sadness.

Not because I wanted him to hurt.

Because I finally understood how much my grandmother had seen.

Evelyn reached into another box.

“She left this for you.””

A small black notebook.

I recognized it immediately.

My grandmother’s journal.

I held it carefully.

“Why now?””

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“Because Linda knows this exists.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Because someone told her.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

But I saw fear in his eyes.

“Someone close to us.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She has someone inside your life.””

I opened the journal.

The first page contained only one sentence.

*When the people closest to Emma become the greatest danger, show her this.*

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“What does it say?””

I closed the journal.

“I don’t know yet.””

Because suddenly, I didn’t want him to know everything.

Not until I knew who was truly on my side.

Evelyn handed me another envelope.

“This was the final instruction.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single line.

*The person who betrayed you will be the person you least expect.*

A noise came from outside.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn walked toward the window.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She just whispered:

“They found us.””

Daniel moved toward the door.

“Who?””

Evelyn stepped back.

And then we heard it.

A car door closing.

Another.

Then footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone who wasn’t afraid of being discovered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma…”

I held the journal tightly.

Because whoever was outside wasn’t coming to negotiate.

They were coming to take something.

May you like

And this time…

I was ready.
