Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Daniel’s Silence

I should have been angry.
Instead, I felt tired.
A deep exhaustion that had nothing to do with pregnancy.
It came from realizing how long I had been standing alone.
“What does she know?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because Daniel had always been predictable.
When he was guilty, he avoided eye contact.
When he was nervous, he rubbed the back of his neck.
When he wanted to escape a conversation, he changed the subject.
Now he did all three.
“Daniel.””
He finally looked at me.
“There’s something about the company.””
I crossed my arms.
“The company you almost lost?””
He flinched.
“Yes.””
“What about it?””
He sat down slowly.
“Before we got married, Mom helped me negotiate with some investors.””
I waited.
“And?””
“And there were conditions.””
I frowned.
“What conditions?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“She wanted control.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Control of what?””
“Not everything.””
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“The company.””
I stared at him.
“You gave your mother control over your company?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
Then he corrected himself.
“Not exactly.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the backyard was peaceful.
The same place where I had imagined raising our daughter.
The same place where Linda had told me I didn’t belong.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“She helped me when things were bad. She put pressure on some people. Made introductions. Signed agreements.””
“And you never told me?””
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
I turned around.
“You didn’t think it mattered that your mother had influence over our finances?””
“Our finances?””
“Yes.””
I pointed toward him.
“Daniel, I paid your debts.””
He looked ashamed.
“I know.””
“No. You know now.””
The silence between us was painful.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Mom told me not to tell you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She said you would think I was weak.””
I stared at him.
“So you listened to her.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That was enough.
I sat down across from him.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“Because I was embarrassed, Emma.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I built a company and almost lost everything. Then my mother stepped in and saved me.””
“She didn’t save you.””
My voice was quiet.
“She controlled you.””
Daniel looked away.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the garden.
The cake.
The silence.
“I need space.””
His head lifted.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I need you to understand something.””
He waited.
“I am not fighting your mother because of a cake.””
His expression softened.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I touched my stomach.
“I am fighting because our daughter is going to grow up watching how people treat women.””
Daniel went still.
“And I refuse to let her learn that love means accepting disrespect.””
That night, Daniel slept in the guest room.
I barely slept at all.
At 3:17 in the morning, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the message.
*You need to know what Linda is planning before it’s too late.*
My heart started beating faster.
I typed back.
*Who is this?*
The reply came almost immediately.
*Someone who helped Daniel build his company.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Your mother-in-law isn’t trying to take your house.*
A pause.
Then:
*She’s trying to take your daughter.*
I sat up in bed.
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
Another message appeared.
*Meet me tomorrow. Come alone.*
I read it three times.
Then I looked toward the guest room.
Daniel was only a few steps away.
The man who had stood silently while his mother destroyed my baby shower.
The man who had hidden things from me.
The man I had loved for four years.
And for the first time, I wondered if I truly knew him.
Because if this message was real…
May you like
the cake had never been the real attack.
It had only been the beginning.
