Surprise

Chapter 10: The Name Behind The Plan

I stared at the name on my phone until the letters blurred.

*Richard Carter.*

Daniel’s father.

The man who had barely spoken to me during our four years of marriage.

The man who always sat quietly beside Linda at family dinners.

The man everyone described as “calm.””

But suddenly, I wondered if calm was just another word for hidden.

Daniel stepped away from me.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

I looked at him.

“You know something.””

He shook his head.

“No, Emma.””

“Then why did you react like that?””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“Because if Dad is involved…”

He stopped.

“If he’s involved, what?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Margaret looked between us.

“Who is Richard Carter?””

Daniel sat down.

“My father.””

“I know that,” I said.

“What I’m asking is why his name made you look terrified.””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Because my father doesn’t do anything without a reason.””

The words settled heavily.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel sighed.

“When I was younger, I thought my dad was just quiet. I thought Mom was the one making all the decisions.””

He looked at the messages.

“But maybe I was wrong.””

I sat across from him.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he began.

“My father built the original Carter Construction company. Mom handled the family image. Dad handled the money.””

“And?””

“And when the company started struggling, he didn’t want to sell.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your property.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“My property?””

“Yes.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Daniel swallowed.

“My father always believed the Carter name needed something permanent. Land. Assets. Something that couldn’t disappear.””

I stared at him.

“You’re saying they wanted my inheritance because of the land?””

Daniel nodded.

“I think so.””

The room became silent.

For years, I thought Linda hated me because I wasn’t good enough.

Because I wasn’t a Carter.

Because I gave birth to a daughter instead of a son.

But maybe that was only the surface.

Maybe the baby shower wasn’t about the baby.

It was about control.

Margaret picked up the phone.

“Who sent this message?””

“We don’t know.””

Daniel looked at me.

“But we need to find out.””

The next morning, Daniel agreed to meet his father.

I wanted to go.

Daniel didn’t want me to.

“I need to talk to him alone.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve been doing things alone your entire marriage.””

He flinched.

“I know.””

“Then you understand why I don’t trust that.””

After a long silence, he nodded.

“You’re right.””

We met Richard at a small restaurant outside town.

He arrived exactly on time.

That was the first thing I noticed.

People who planned everything rarely arrived late.

He looked older than I remembered.

Gray hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

The kind of man who could destroy someone’s life without raising his voice.

He sat down.

“Emma.””

He nodded politely.

“Daniel.””

No apology.

No surprise.

Just control.

I placed the documents on the table.

Richard looked at them.

Then at Daniel.

“You found out.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You knew?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

My hands tightened under the table.

“How long?””

Richard looked at me.

“Long enough.””

The anger inside me burned.

“Long enough to know your wife planned to take my child?””

His expression barely changed.

“That was never the intention.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then what was?””

Richard looked at his son.

“You need to understand something.””

“No,” Daniel interrupted.

“You need to understand something.””

The restaurant went quiet around us.

“I almost lost my wife because I listened to you and Mom.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“This emotional reaction is exactly why you were never ready to lead.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Lead?””

He shook his head.

“You mean obey.””

Richard ignored him.

Then he looked at me.

“Emma, your grandmother was intelligent.””

I said nothing.

“She knew families could become complicated when money was involved.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re admitting you wanted my inheritance.””

Richard folded his hands.

“We wanted security.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“You wanted ownership.””

For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The truth had landed.

Then he said something I never expected.

“You think Linda is your enemy.””

He leaned back.

“But she’s only following instructions.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Richard looked at his son.

“You really thought your mother created this plan?””

Nobody spoke.

The restaurant suddenly felt too small.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked at his father.

“Who created it?””

Richard remained silent.

Then his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

And the color drained from his face.

“What?”” Daniel asked.

Richard stood.

“We need to leave.””

I grabbed the folder.

“No.””

He stopped.

I looked directly at him.

“You started this.””

Richard stared at me.

Then quietly said:

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“I warned them not to underestimate you.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the door.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your grandmother.””
