Chapter 4

I walked into the ballroom alone.
The orchestra stopped playing.
Two hundred guests turned toward me.
I could feel every eye in the room.
My mother stood near the front.
My father was beside her.
Vanessa's family occupied the opposite side of the aisle.
The enormous crystal chandeliers glittered above us.
White roses covered the tables.
Everything looked perfect.
Except the marriage was already over.
I stepped onto the stage.
My hands were shaking.
But my voice was steady.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?”
The room became silent.
I looked toward my parents.
My mother held my father's hand.
I took a breath.
“Thank you all for being here.”
Several people smiled.
They thought I was beginning a wedding speech.
I swallowed.
“Unfortunately, there will not be a wedding today.”
A murmur moved through the crowd.
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
I continued.
“Something happened this morning that made it impossible for me to proceed.”
Someone whispered loudly.
“What happened?”
I looked toward the entrance.
Vanessa stood there.
Her face was pale.
Rochelle remained nearby.
I turned back toward the guests.
“I'm not going to share private accusations or humiliate anyone in this room.”
The murmuring stopped.
“But I cannot make a lifelong promise when the trust required for that promise is gone.”
My voice cracked.
“I believed today would be the happiest day of my life.”
I looked down.
“Instead, it's one of the hardest.”
My father stood.
He walked toward the stage.
Then he placed a hand on my shoulder.
I nearly broke.
He looked at the guests.
“My son has made a difficult decision. We ask everyone to respect it.”
Several people nodded.
My mother began crying.
I stepped down from the stage.
Then Vanessa rushed toward me.
“Ethan!”
Everyone turned.
She stopped a few feet away.
Her wedding gown swept across the floor.
“You can't do this!”
I looked at her.
“Vanessa, please.”
She began crying.
“You're throwing away everything we've built!”
I swallowed.
“I didn't destroy our trust.”
Her face twisted.
“Darius made me do it!”
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
She seemed to realize what she had said.
Then she covered her mouth.
My father stepped forward.
“Vanessa, calm down.”
She shook her head.
“No!”
She looked at me desperately.
“Ethan, I love you!”
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Part of me wanted to believe her.
Part of me still remembered the woman who sat beside me during my father's surgery.
The woman who brought food to my employees.
The woman who kissed me goodnight.
But another part remembered her laughing into her phone.
He trusts me completely.
This wedding makes me rich.
I shook my head.
“I don't know which version of you is real.”
She began sobbing.
Then Monique appeared.
Vanessa's maid of honor.
She hurried toward us.
“Vanessa, stop.”
Vanessa turned.
“Stay out of this.”
Monique looked frightened.
I noticed immediately.
She glanced toward the ballroom doors.
Then she whispered something to Vanessa.
I couldn't hear the words.
But Vanessa's face changed.
She looked terrified.
I stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Monique shook her head.
“Nothing.”
I stared at her.
“Monique.”
She began trembling.
Then she whispered, “Darius is gone.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He left.”
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Where?”
Monique shook her head.
“I don't know.”
I looked toward Rochelle.
She was already speaking with hotel security.
A few minutes later, she approached.
“Ethan, we need to secure your documents and review your accounts.”
I nodded.
“Why?”
She lowered her voice.
“Because Darius may have had access to more information than we realized.”
My stomach tightened.
“What information?”
“Banking records. Property details. Corporate documents.”
I stared at her.
“How?”
She looked toward Vanessa.
I followed her gaze.
Vanessa began crying again.
I understood.
She had been giving him information.
For months.
Maybe longer.
I felt sick.
My father touched my shoulder.
“Son, let's get you out of here.”
I nodded.
My mother approached.
She wrapped her arms around me.
I held her tightly.
“I'm sorry, Mom.”
She shook her head.
“For what?”
“For not listening.”
She kissed my cheek.
“You don't have to apologize for loving someone.”
I began crying.
She held me closer.
“But you do have to protect yourself when that love is being used against you.”
I nodded.
Then we left the ballroom.
The wedding guests slowly began departing.
Some hugged me.
Others offered quiet words of support.
A few looked confused.
I didn't blame them.
I barely understood what had happened myself.
Outside the hotel, I stood beside my car.
The afternoon sun felt too bright.
My father stood next to me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, “Ethan, there's something I never told you.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“About Darius.”
My stomach tightened.
“What about him?”
My father looked toward the hotel.
“I recognized him the first time Vanessa introduced us.”
I stared.
“From where?”
He swallowed.
“From your uncle's old business.”
I frowned.
“Uncle Raymond?”
My father nodded.
Raymond Carter had owned a small trucking company years earlier.
It collapsed after a financial dispute.
He lost nearly everything.
I remembered the family arguments.
The lawsuits.
The shame.
My father continued.
“Darius worked with one of the investment groups involved.”
I felt cold.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
He looked ashamed.
“I wasn't certain it was the same man.”
I stared at him.
“And now?”
He nodded slowly.
“Now I'm certain.”
I leaned against my car.
My uncle's business had collapsed almost fifteen years earlier.
I was still in college.
I remembered Raymond telling everyone he had been betrayed by people he trusted.
But nobody could prove exactly what happened.
My father took a breath.
“Ethan, I think Darius has been doing this for a long time.”
I looked toward the hotel.
Vanessa had disappeared inside.
Darius was gone.
And somewhere, someone had been trying to use my wedding to take control of everything my family built.
I opened my car door.
Then Rochelle called.
“Ethan, we confirmed something.”
My heart pounded.
“What?”
“The transfer documents weren't the only paperwork prepared.”
I stopped breathing.
“What else?”
She hesitated.
“A power of attorney.”
My stomach tightened.
“In whose favor?”
“Vanessa.”
I stared at the steering wheel.
Rochelle continued.
“And Ethan, there's something worse.”
I closed my eyes.
“What?”
“The document appears to have been submitted with an electronic signature attributed to you.”
I whispered, “I never signed it.”
“I know.”
May you like
Then she said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“Someone has already tried to use it.”
