Chapter 1

Twenty minutes before I was supposed to marry the woman of my dreams, I heard her laughing about how she planned to steal everything I owned.
I stood outside her bridal suite, holding a small velvet box containing the diamond bracelet I had bought her as a wedding surprise.
Then I heard my name.
“Ethan is so stupid,” Vanessa laughed. “After I marry him, I’ll take everything he has.”
My hand froze against the door.
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
Then she laughed again.
“He trusts me completely. This wedding makes me rich.”
I felt something inside my chest turn cold.
My name is Ethan Carter.
I was thirty-three years old, the owner of a successful construction and property development company in Atlanta.
I had spent nine years building that business.
Nine years of missed holidays, sleepless nights, and working until my hands hurt.
I wasn't born wealthy.
My mother cleaned hotel rooms.
My father repaired trucks until his back finally gave out.
Everything I owned came from sacrifice.
And the woman I was about to marry had just revealed that she saw those sacrifices as her opportunity.
I looked through the narrow opening in the bridal suite door.
Vanessa stood before a full-length mirror.
Her champagne-white wedding gown shimmered beneath the lights.
A jeweled tiara rested in her long, straight black hair.
She looked breathtaking.
I remembered the first time I saw her.
She had been volunteering at a charity fundraiser.
She laughed at my terrible jokes.
She asked about my parents.
She told me she admired men who worked hard.
I fell in love with her kindness.
Or what I believed was kindness.
Now she was speaking into her phone with a smile I had never seen before.
“No, girl, I'm serious,” she said. “Once the paperwork is done, I'll never have to worry about money again.”
My stomach tightened.
She paused to listen.
Then she laughed.
“Ethan thinks marriage is forever. That's what makes this so easy.”
I gripped the velvet box.
My hands were trembling.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had insisted on an extravagant wedding.
The luxury hotel.
The imported flowers.
The six-tier cake.
The designer gown.
I had agreed because I wanted to make her happy.
She told me every little girl dreamed of a perfect wedding.
I believed her.
I had paid almost two hundred thousand dollars for that dream.
Now I wondered whether the wedding was all she had ever wanted.
Vanessa continued talking.
“His company alone is worth millions. And don't forget the houses.”
I leaned closer.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
Was she talking about divorce?
Was she already planning to leave me?
Then she said something worse.
“His mother doesn't like me, but she can't stop this. After tomorrow, Ethan won't be making decisions without me.”
My breath caught.
My mother.
Vanessa had complained about her for months.
She said my mother was controlling.
Jealous.
Unable to accept another woman in my life.
I had defended Vanessa.
I had even argued with my mother the previous evening.
And now I was standing outside a door, hearing the truth in Vanessa's own voice.
“Just make sure everything is ready,” she said into the phone.
Her tone changed.
“No mistakes this time.”
I frowned.
What mistakes?
Before I could hear more, Vanessa turned toward the doorway.
I stepped back.
My heart pounded.
I silently pulled the door almost closed and hurried down the hallway.
My reflection appeared in the polished elevator doors.
Emerald-green tuxedo.
Black bow tie.
Perfectly trimmed beard.
A man dressed for the happiest day of his life.
But my face looked like I had just buried someone.
In a way, I had.
I had buried the future I thought Vanessa and I would share.
I stopped near a chandelier and pulled out my phone.
My first instinct was to call my mother.
Then I remembered someone else.
Attorney Rochelle Grant.
She had represented my company for six years.
More importantly, she had repeatedly warned me about marrying without protecting the business.
Vanessa hated Rochelle.
She called her suspicious and disrespectful.
I had told Rochelle we didn't need a prenuptial agreement.
I trusted Vanessa.
The memory made my stomach twist.
Rochelle answered on the second ring.
“Ethan? Aren't you getting married in twenty minutes?”
“I need you at the ceremony.”
She paused.
“What happened?”
“Bring the documents.”
Silence.
“Ethan, which documents?”
“The asset protection agreement you prepared.”
Her voice became serious.
“Has Vanessa reviewed it?”
“No.”
“Then you cannot expect her to sign it immediately before the ceremony. She needs independent legal advice and a fair opportunity to review it.”
I closed my eyes.
“I know.”
“What's going on?”
I looked toward the bridal suite.
“I heard something.”
“What?”
I swallowed.
“Vanessa said she's marrying me to take everything I own.”
Rochelle became quiet.
Then she asked, “Are you certain?”
“I heard it myself.”
She took a breath.
“Then don't sign anything today, Ethan. And don't let anyone pressure either of you into a legal agreement.”
I nodded.
“I want the documents brought here. I want her to see that I'm not walking into this blindly.”
“I can bring the folder. But understand that a valid agreement requires proper review, not a surprise signature.”
“I understand.”
I ended the call.
Then I loosened my fists.
I couldn't afford to lose control.
Not now.
Not with two hundred guests waiting downstairs.
Not with my parents sitting in the front row.
Not with Vanessa's family expecting a celebration.
I straightened my bow tie.
I took one long breath.
Then I heard footsteps.
“Baby!”
I turned.
Vanessa stood behind me.
Her gown flowed across the marble floor.
Her smile was warm.
Perfect.
The same smile I had fallen in love with.
She approached and touched my chest.
“Are you ready to marry me?”
I looked into her eyes.
For a moment, I wondered whether she could see the hurt in mine.
“Absolutely,” I said.
She smiled wider.
“I can't believe today is finally here.”
“Neither can I.”
She laughed and adjusted my bow tie.
“You look so handsome.”
I studied her face.
How could someone sound so loving while hiding so much cruelty?
“Vanessa,” I said quietly.
“Yes, baby?”
“Are you marrying me because you love me?”
Her smile faltered.
Only for a second.
Then she laughed.
“What kind of question is that?”
“An honest one.”
She kissed my cheek.
“Of course I love you.”
I felt nothing.
She stepped back.
“Why are you acting strange?”
I forced a smile.
“I prepared a wedding surprise.”
Her eyes brightened.
“A surprise?”
“Yes.”
“Is it jewelry?”
I almost laughed.
The diamond bracelet was still in my pocket.
“No,” I answered. “Something more important.”
We walked toward the ballroom together.
The doors stood open beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.
I could hear the orchestra.
Guests were taking their seats.
My father stood near the entrance speaking to a cousin.
My mother sat inside wearing a beautiful royal-blue dress.
When she saw me, she smiled.
I nearly broke.
Then Rochelle appeared.
She carried a thick sealed folder.
Across the front were the words:
PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT / ASSET PROTECTION.
Vanessa stopped walking.
Her eyes widened.
“What is that?”
Rochelle handed me the folder.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Before we say ‘I do,’ there's something we need to discuss and, if we both choose, properly review and sign.”
Her smile vanished.
“Ethan?”
I held the folder against my chest.
Vanessa glanced toward the bridal suite.
Then back at me.
Her voice became a whisper.
“Ethan... what did you hear?”
I stared at her.
I wanted to ask who she had been talking to.
I wanted to know how long she had been planning this.
But before I could answer, her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
And I saw a message from someone saved as DARIUS.
DID HE SIGN THE TRANSFER PAPERS YET?
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because I had no idea who Darius was.
But I suddenly knew Vanessa wasn't planning this alone.
