Surprise

Chapter 3

My mother's house was the first property I ever purchased with money from my business.

I was twenty-six when I bought it.

It was a modest brick home in a quiet Atlanta neighborhood.

Three bedrooms.

A small garden.

A front porch where my mother liked to sit in the evenings.

After years of cleaning hotel rooms, she finally had a place where she could rest without worrying about rent.

I placed the house in a family trust with my parents as protected beneficiaries.

It was supposed to remain their home for the rest of their lives.

And now Rochelle was telling me someone had tried to transfer it.

I stared at her.

“Who submitted the request?”

“We're still verifying the source.”

I felt sick.

“Can they take the house?”

“Not simply because a document was submitted. The transfer hasn't been completed, and we're challenging the authorization immediately.”

I closed my eyes.

“Okay.”

Vanessa stood nearby.

Her face was pale.

Darius had disappeared into the ballroom.

I turned toward her.

“Did you know about my mother's house?”

She shook her head.

“Ethan—”

“Did you?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn't know it was your mother's home.”

My chest tightened.

That answer told me everything.

She knew about the transfer.

She just didn't know who lived there.

I stepped back.

“You knew.”

She began crying.

“Please let me explain.”

I shook my head.

“You tried to take my mother's house.”

“No!”

“Then what did you do?”

She looked toward the hallway.

I followed her gaze.

Darius stood near the elevator.

Watching us.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“He told me the property was part of your investment portfolio.”

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?”

She began shaking.

“He said it was a temporary transfer.”

“To whom?”

She swallowed.

“A company.”

“What company?”

She looked away.

“Mitchell Capital Holdings.”

I felt my stomach turn.

Darius's company.

I looked toward the elevator.

He was gone.

I turned to Rochelle.

“Can we stop this?”

She nodded.

“We're already contacting the title company and relevant parties. We need to preserve all records and investigate the signatures.”

I took a breath.

“Do whatever is legally necessary.”

Then I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

“Ethan, baby. What's happening? People are saying the wedding is delayed.”

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, I need you to stay where you are.”

Her voice changed.

“What's wrong?”

“I'll explain.”

“Ethan.”

I swallowed.

“Mom, I heard Vanessa talking about marrying me for my money.”

Silence.

Then she whispered, “Oh, baby.”

I nearly cried.

“There's more.”

I explained the property transfer.

My mother listened quietly.

When I finished, she said something that broke my heart.

“Your father warned you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

“He wasn't trying to control your life.”

“I know, Mom.”

She sighed.

“We just wanted you to be happy.”

Tears ran down my face.

“I thought I was.”

She became quiet.

Then she said, “Come home when you're ready.”

I swallowed.

“Okay.”

“Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“You haven't lost us.”

I covered my mouth.

Those words saved me.

Because in that moment, I felt like I had lost everything else.

After ending the call, I turned toward Vanessa.

She stood alone beside the ballroom entrance.

Her tiara sparkled beneath the lights.

Her beautiful wedding gown looked almost cruel now.

I approached her.

“Vanessa.”

She looked up.

“Baby?”

I shook my head.

“Don't call me that.”

She flinched.

I took a breath.

“I need you to tell me everything about Darius.”

She began crying.

“It's complicated.”

“Then start at the beginning.”

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, “I met him before I met you.”

My stomach tightened.

“How long before?”

“About a year.”

I stared at her.

“Were you dating?”

She looked away.

I felt cold.

“Vanessa.”

She nodded.

My chest tightened.

“You were involved with him?”

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

She reached toward me.

“But it ended.”

“When?”

She said nothing.

I looked into her eyes.

“When, Vanessa?”

Her voice broke.

“After we got engaged.”

I felt as though someone had punched me.

I turned away.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

The wedding.

The engagement.

The proposal.

The expensive ring.

All of it had happened while she was still involved with another man.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

I shook my head.

“No.”

She began sobbing.

“I fell in love with you.”

I turned back.

“Then why were you talking about stealing everything I own?”

She covered her face.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered, “Darius.”

I stared at her.

“What does he have on you?”

She lowered her hands.

“Money.”

I frowned.

“What money?”

“He says I owe him.”

“How much?”

She looked down.

“Almost four hundred thousand dollars.”

I stared.

“Four hundred thousand?”

She nodded.

“What for?”

She began crying harder.

“He helped me start a business.”

“What business?”

“A beauty supply company.”

I knew Vanessa had once tried to launch a business.

She told me it failed because of unreliable partners.

I never asked many questions.

Now I regretted that.

“Did he invest four hundred thousand dollars?”

She hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She whispered, “He says I signed documents guaranteeing the money.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you?”

“I don't remember everything.”

I looked at her.

“Vanessa, I need the truth.”

She nodded through tears.

“He convinced me to open accounts and move money for his investors.”

I felt sick.

“What kind of money?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

I stared at her.

Then I remembered Rochelle's warning.

Darius had once tried to convince me to invest in a private real estate project.

I declined.

He seemed offended.

Vanessa spent weeks telling me I had missed a great opportunity.

Now the pieces were beginning to fit together.

I looked at her.

“Did Darius tell you to marry me?”

She began crying harder.

I felt the answer before she spoke.

“Vanessa.”

She whispered, “He encouraged it.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

“He said you were wealthy and could help me get out of debt.”

I stared at her.

“And you agreed?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't plan to love you.”

Those words nearly destroyed me.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She covered her mouth.

Then she whispered, “At first, it was supposed to be about money.”

I stepped back.

My entire body felt numb.

At first.

So there had been a plan.

A plan before our relationship became serious.

A plan before she accepted my proposal.

A plan before I bought the ring.

I turned away.

I couldn't look at her anymore.

Then Rochelle approached.

“Ethan, we need to leave this area.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She lowered her voice.

“Security found Darius trying to access a private office near the ballroom.”

I frowned.

“What office?”

“The hotel manager's office.”

I stared at her.

She continued.

“He was asking about documents delivered for your signature.”

My heart began pounding.

Then I remembered something.

Earlier that morning, Vanessa had handed me a sealed envelope.

She said it contained final wedding arrangements.

I had placed it in my jacket without opening it.

My hands shook as I reached into my pocket.

The envelope was still there.

I opened it.

Inside were several pages.

At first, they looked like ordinary marriage-related documents.

Then I saw the title.

IRREVOCABLE ASSET TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION.

I stopped breathing.

My name appeared on the first page.

So did Mitchell Capital Holdings.

And beneath the signature line was a note.

SIGN BEFORE CEREMONY.

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

Then I whispered, “You were going to have me sign this before I married you.”

She began crying.

“Ethan—”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at Rochelle.

“Preserve everything.”

She nodded.

Then I turned toward the ballroom.

Two hundred guests were still waiting.

And I realized I owed them something.

Not a wedding.

The truth.

I walked toward the entrance.

Vanessa reached for me.

“Ethan, please don't.”

I stopped.

Then I looked back.

“You wanted a wedding surprise.”

May you like

My voice was steady.

“Now you're going to get one.”
