Chapter 7

Bomb specialists removed the cake.
The ticking came from a kitchen timer.
Daniel wanted panic, not an explosion.
His message continued after the timer stopped.
“If Salvatore or federal agents enter the church, people die.”
A camera feed appeared on the speaker’s small screen.
Six former household employees sat inside our family chapel with their hands bound.
Daniel had taken innocent people who knew Claire.
One was Maria, Leo’s former nanny.
Leo saw her face.
“Maria is scared.”
Claire turned off the screen.
Daniel demanded Claire and Leo in exchange for the hostages.
He gave us forty minutes.
“No,” I said.
Claire faced me.
“He will kill them.”
“He wants you and Leo.”
“Then we use what he wants.”
“You are not going inside.”
Her expression hardened.
“This is my decision.”
I almost ordered her to stay.
That instinct had controlled her life long before Daniel.
I forced myself to stop.
“Tell me your plan.”
She wanted to enter alone wearing a microphone.
Leo would remain hidden in an armored vehicle while prerecorded audio made Daniel believe he was nearby.
Federal teams would enter through the chapel crypt.
I hated every part of it.
But I listened.
Grant approved the plan.
At the church, Claire walked through the front doors.
I watched from the command vehicle with Leo beside me.
He wore headphones and held my hand.
The camera inside Claire’s brooch transmitted a narrow view of the chapel.
Candles burned along the altar.
The hostages knelt near the first pew.
Daniel stood beneath the image of Saint Michael.
He wore the suit from their wedding.
“Where is my son?”
“In the car.”
“You were told to bring him.”
“You see me first. Release Maria.”
Daniel laughed.
“You think you negotiate now?”
“I think you need me alive to control the trust.”
“Not after tonight.”
He walked toward her.
“What did you plan to do to me?”
“Make your death look like Salvatore’s revenge.”
He wanted the authorities to believe I killed Claire after she cooperated.
That would destroy my agreement and trigger a war.
“Did you ever love me?” she asked.
Daniel touched her face.
“I loved who you were before Leo.”
“Afraid?”
“Obedient.”
Claire did not flinch.
“What happened after Leo?”
“You started questioning me.”
“Because I had someone else to protect.”
“You became weak.”
“No. I became a mother.”
She stepped away from his hand.
The crypt team reached the lower stairway.
Then Daniel looked directly at her brooch.
“Pretty pin.”
My blood turned cold.
He tore it from her dress and crushed it.
The video vanished.
Gunfire erupted through the audio channel.
Leo screamed.
I left him with Dr. Bellini and ran toward the chapel despite Grant’s order.
Federal officers breached the side doors.
Inside, smoke filled the aisle.
Daniel dragged Claire toward the bell tower.
Preston’s men fired from the balcony.
Officers protected the hostages and returned fire.
I followed Claire’s torn veil up the narrow stairs.
Daniel had chosen the church because he knew every passage.
At the top, wind swept through open stone arches.
He held Claire near the edge.
A knife pressed against her side.
“Drop your weapon,” he ordered.
I placed it on the floor.
“You destroyed my life,” he said.
“You did that.”
“I married your daughter because you promised me a place.”
“I promised you respect if you earned it.”
“You never saw me as family.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You were family. That is why your betrayal hurt.”
Daniel tightened his grip.
“You chose him.”
“He never made me choose until you made love a weapon.”
I moved closer.
Daniel pressed the knife harder.
“Stop.”
Claire looked at me.
“Trust me, Papa.”
For most of her life, I expected her to trust my strength.
Now she asked me to trust hers.
I stopped.
She drove her heel onto Daniel’s foot and threw her weight forward.
His grip loosened.
She twisted away.
I reached them before he recovered.
Daniel swung the knife.
It cut my sleeve.
I struck his wrist against the stone until the weapon fell.
He attacked again.
We struggled near the edge.
For one moment, Daniel slipped.
I caught his arm.
He dangled above the chapel courtyard.
“Let me fall,” he gasped.
Perhaps he believed death would prevent the trial.
Perhaps he wanted me to become the killer he described.
Claire grabbed my shoulder.
“Pull him up.”
Together, we saved the man who had tried to destroy us.
Federal officers handcuffed him.
He stared at Claire.
“Why?”
She looked down at him.
“Because I will never become you.”
The hostages were freed.
No innocent person died.
Outside, Leo ran into Claire’s arms.
Daniel was placed in an armored vehicle.
Before the doors closed, he shouted, “Preston will talk! He will bury all of you!”
I approached him.
“Good.”
His confidence faltered.
“The truth no longer frightens me.”
Grant recovered Daniel’s hidden accounts and communications.
The evidence connected him to the poisoning, abduction, archive fire, and chapel attack.
It also connected him to a final planned operation.
A list of council families appeared beneath a date three days away.
The location was Leo’s preschool.
Daniel and Lucian had planned to attack the school, blame a rival family, and ignite a war large enough to hide their takeover.

The attack team had already been paid.
And despite Daniel’s capture, nobody had canceled the order.
