Surprise

Chapter 5

Sofia removed her veil.

My younger sister had spent most of the past decade in Rome.

She claimed she came after hearing about Claire’s abduction.

No one had informed her.

“Who called you?” I asked.

She looked at Lorenzo.

“An old friend.”

Lorenzo refused to meet her eyes.

Claire moved Leo behind her.

Sofia noticed.

“Do you believe I would harm a child?”

“I believed Daniel loved me,” Claire said. “I no longer confuse belief with proof.”

Pride and sadness moved through me at once.

My daughter was frightened, but she was no longer silent.

Sofia approached the table.

“Isabella discovered Vittorio was stealing from Salvatore. She threatened to expose him.”

“You knew?” I asked.

“I knew they argued.”

“Did you know about the crash?”

“Not until afterward.”

Lorenzo laughed bitterly.

“She knew before the funeral.”

Sofia struck him.

My guards stepped forward.

I raised one hand.

No one moved.

Lorenzo touched his split lip.

“Ask her who paid the mechanic.”

I looked at Sofia.

She remained calm.

“Vittorio did.”

“From your account.”

“He used an account I managed.”

“Did you report it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He was my brother.”

The answer filled me with disgust because I understood it too well.

Our family had protected blood at the expense of truth for generations.

“What happened to the mechanic?”

“He disappeared.”

Lorenzo spoke again.

“He is buried beneath the old vineyard.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Claire covered Leo’s ears.

I ordered Captain Alvarez contacted immediately.

Sofia stared at me.

“You would bring police onto Moretti land?”

“If a murdered man is buried there, yes.”

“You have become weak.”

“No. I have stopped calling secrecy strength.”

She laughed.

“You built your power through that secrecy.”

She was right.

I had not killed Isabella.

I had not abused Claire.

But I created a world where family reputation mattered more than honest questions.

Daniel had used that world perfectly.

Lorenzo agreed to provide a complete statement if given protection.

Captain Alvarez moved him to a secure medical facility.

Sofia was confined to a guest room until police arrived.

She did not resist.

Before leaving the council room, she turned toward Claire.

“Your mother wanted to destroy this family.”

Claire lifted her chin.

“No. She wanted to stop people like you from using it as a shield.”

Police found human remains beneath the vineyard.

They also found the mechanic’s tools and a watch engraved with his initials.

Sofia was arrested for obstruction and conspiracy.

She continued insisting she never ordered Isabella’s death.

Lorenzo’s statement supported part of her claim.

Vittorio paid the mechanic to damage Isabella’s brakes.

Sofia discovered the payment before the crash but warned Vittorio instead of me.

She gave him time to complete the plan.

After Isabella died, Vittorio told Sofia the mechanic might talk.

Sofia arranged for Lorenzo to “solve the problem.”

Lorenzo ordered the murder.

Lucian helped hide the body.

Every branch led back into the same poisoned roots.

Daniel had learned about the old crimes through Preston.

Preston found Isabella’s partial ledger while working for Lorenzo.

They rebuilt Vittorio’s plan.

Control the Moretti businesses.

Remove me slowly.

Use Claire’s marriage and Leo’s inheritance to make the takeover appear legal.

Daniel’s abuse intensified when Claire found hidden account statements.

“What statements?” I asked her.

She returned with a small blue notebook.

“I found this behind Daniel’s dresser.”

It listed transfers from Moretti construction accounts to Romano shipping companies.

“Why didn’t you bring it to me?”

“He said if I did, he would release a video of you ordering a man’s death.”

I felt the room tighten.

“Did he show you the video?”

“Yes.”

“Who was the man?”

“Emilio Costa.”

I remembered Emilio.

He betrayed our organization and disappeared fifteen years earlier.

I had ordered men to bring him to me.

He was found dead before they did.

“I did not order his death.”

“The video showed you saying he would never speak again.”

“Because I planned to remove him from every business.”

Claire looked uncertain.

“That is not what it sounded like.”

“No.”

For decades, I used threats because fear made people move faster.

Now those words could be shaped into evidence against me.

Daniel counted on that.

“He told me if you went to prison, Lucian would take everything and kill Leo.”

“So you endured Daniel to protect us.”

“I thought I was.”

I took the notebook.

“You should never have been forced to carry this alone.”

Neither should you, Isabella seemed to answer from memory.

That evening, a federal prosecutor named Amelia Grant arrived.

Captain Alvarez had shared the evidence.

Grant offered protection for Claire and Leo if I cooperated fully.

“What does fully mean?” I asked.

“All financial records, all illegal operations, every crime committed through your organization.”

My attorneys objected.

I silenced them.

“What happens to me?”

“That depends on what you disclose.”

Claire looked terrified.

“Papa, you could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Daniel had relied on my fear of exposure.

So had Lucian, Lorenzo, Preston, and Sofia.

As long as I protected my own secrets, they could keep using my daughter.

I looked at Grant.

“You will receive everything.”

My advisers protested.

One warned me the remaining council would retaliate.

I thought of Leo hiding behind his birthday table.

“Then let them come after me openly.”

I signed the cooperation agreement.

That night, I opened the underground archive beneath my study.

It contained forty years of records.

Payments.

Names.

Deals made by my father, Vittorio, and me.

I had told myself those records protected the family.

In truth, they preserved the machinery that kept hurting it.

Claire stood beside me.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

“You could lose everything.”

“I nearly lost you while protecting it.”

We began carrying boxes upstairs.

Halfway through, the lights failed.

The vault door slammed shut.

A speaker crackled.

Daniel’s voice filled the darkness.

“Thank you for putting all the evidence in one room.”

Claire grabbed my hand.

May you like

Daniel laughed softly.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
