Surprise

Chapter 6

Emergency lights flickered inside the archive.

Claire and I stood behind a steel door designed to survive fire, gunshots, and police raids.

It could also become a coffin.

“Daniel is in jail,” Claire whispered.

“He has help.”

The speaker came alive again.

“I told you, Salvatore. Your house was never truly yours.”

Smoke began entering through the ventilation system.

Claire coughed.

I searched beneath the document shelves.

Isabella had insisted on a mechanical escape release years earlier.

I once mocked her for distrusting electronic locks.

Now her caution might save us.

Claire found the lever behind a lower panel.

It would open a narrow service tunnel, but only if someone held it down.

“I’ll hold it,” I said.

“No.”

“You go first.”

“We go together.”

“The lever resets when released.”

She looked at the smoke.

Then she removed her belt, looped it through the handle, and wrapped the other end around a heavy file cabinet.

The lever remained down.

The tunnel opened.

We crawled inside carrying only Isabella’s ledger and the blue notebook.

Flames erupted in the archive behind us.

Daniel’s allies were not stealing evidence.

They were destroying it.

We emerged behind the greenhouse.

Gunfire sounded near the main gate.

Federal agents and my guards exchanged shots with attackers wearing maintenance uniforms.

Claire’s face changed.

“Leo.”

He was inside the secure nursery with Dr. Bellini.

We ran toward the house.

A vehicle crashed through the garden doors.

Preston stepped out.

He should have been in federal custody.

An agent beside him pointed a weapon at my guards.

Corruption had reached the transport team.

Preston saw us.

“Take Claire!”

Two men ran forward.

I pushed her behind a stone planter.

Federal agents returned fire.

One attacker fell.

The other retreated.

Preston moved toward the nursery entrance.

Claire ran after him before I could stop her.

She struck him with a metal garden lantern.

He fell against the door.

“You do not go near my son!”

Preston grabbed her ankle.

She kicked free.

I reached him and forced both arms behind his back.

Captain Alvarez’s team entered from the east hall.

They arrested the corrupt agent and secured Preston.

“Where is Daniel?” I demanded.

Preston laughed.

“You still think he planned this?”

“Who locked the archive?”

“Ask your prosecutor.”

Amelia Grant stood near the gate directing federal officers.

For one second, doubt entered me.

Then Alvarez searched the corrupt agent.

His phone contained messages from someone identified as AG.

Initials could be planted.

Suspicion was another weapon.

I refused to use it without proof.

Leo was safe.

Dr. Bellini had hidden him inside a reinforced closet when the attack began.

The boy ran to Claire.

“Mommy, you came back.”

“Always.”

She held him tightly.

Fire crews controlled the archive blaze, but most records were destroyed.

Fortunately, my accountant maintained encrypted copies outside the estate.

Only four people knew.

I contacted him.

No answer.

Agents went to his home.

It was empty.

A message had been painted across his office wall.

THE OLD WORLD BURNS TONIGHT.

Grant ordered the estate evacuated.

We moved to a federal safe house.

Leo refused to release his stuffed lion.

Claire refused sedatives.

She wanted her mind clear.

“I spent years feeling foggy,” she said.

“Did Daniel drug you?”

“Sometimes he brought tea after hurting me. I would sleep for hours.”

Dr. Bellini tested hair samples.

They showed repeated exposure to the same sedative found in my coffee.

Daniel had been drugging both of us.

It weakened me.

It made Claire doubt her memory.

It also strengthened his false medical claims.

At the safe house, Grant allowed me to question Preston with attorneys present.

He looked exhausted but still arrogant.

“Who is controlling the remaining attacks?”

“Lucian.”

“Lucian is under armed guard in a hospital.”

“He built the plan before his arrest.”

“Who is AG?”

Preston smiled.

“Perhaps Amelia Grant.”

“Too easy.”

“Perhaps your accountant, Anthony Gallo.”

That fit.

Anthony had access to every copied record.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You escaped with his help.”

“No. Daniel arranged that.”

“Daniel is in county isolation.”

“Daniel has been buying guards for years.”

Claire entered.

Preston looked at her.

“You should have signed.”

She remained near the door.

“You should have left Leo alone.”

“We never intended to hurt him.”

“You wrote that children disappear.”

His smile weakened.

Claire placed a recording device on the table.

“Tell me why Daniel hit me before the party.”

“You found the notebook.”

“Why did he need my signature that night?”

“Salvatore’s final dose was already in the coffee.”

My chest tightened.

“He expected me to die during Leo’s birthday?”

“Heart failure surrounded by family. A tragic ending.”

Claire’s face became pale.

“And after Papa died?”

“You would suffer a breakdown. Daniel would take Leo somewhere safe.”

“Then?”

Preston looked away.

I understood.

Claire was never meant to recover.

She would be confined, overdosed, or killed.

Daniel would control Leo’s trust until Preston removed him too.

“You planned to kill my daughter.”

Preston shrugged.

“I handled documents. Daniel handled his wife.”

Claire crossed the room and slapped him.

He smiled.

“There she is.”

She did not strike again.

“I needed to know I could.”

Then she walked out.

Preston’s smile disappeared.

A federal agent entered holding a recovered laptop.

Anthony Gallo had been found at a private airfield.

He was alive.

Agents captured him with copied records and two million dollars in cash.

Anthony immediately named the person funding the attacks.

Not Grant.

Not Lucian.

Daniel.

From jail, he used accounts Preston prepared to hire guards, sabotage the archive, and arrange his own escape.

Grant checked the county facility.

Daniel’s cell was empty.

A guard had been found unconscious.

Security footage showed Daniel leaving in an ambulance.

Then the safe-house alarm sounded.

A delivery van had arrived without authorization.

The driver was dead.

Inside the cargo area sat a birthday cake with three candles.

A speaker hidden beneath it played Daniel’s voice.

May you like

“Claire, bring Leo to the church where we married.”

The cake began ticking.
