Surprise

Chapter 3

Emergency lights turned the corridor red.

I found Leo crouched behind a marble column.

He had escaped the room when two masked men dragged Claire toward the service stairs.

I lifted him.

“Where did they take Mommy?”

He pointed down.

“To the dark cars.”

My guards secured him with Dr. Bellini while I ran toward the garage.

A black vehicle crashed through the service gate.

A second remained near the loading entrance.

One masked man fired toward us.

My guards returned fire above the vehicle, forcing him behind the hood.

I moved along the wall and reached the driver’s door.

The driver tried to reverse.

I opened it and pulled him out.

Another guard restrained him.

The rear seat was empty.

“Where is Claire?”

He spat near my shoes.

I removed his mask.

I recognized him.

Nico Ferraro had worked security for Lorenzo.

“Where is my daughter?”

He laughed.

“She isn’t your daughter anymore.”

My restraint nearly broke.

Then my phone vibrated.

Claire’s number appeared.

A man spoke.

“If you want her alive, release Daniel and Preston.”

“Let me hear her.”

A struggle sounded.

“Papa!”

The line went dead.

We tracked her phone toward the river.

Leo’s stuffed lion contained a locator tag because he often misplaced it. Claire must have carried it when she was taken, but we had found it upstairs.

Then Leo ran into the garage holding a smaller toy lion.

“Mommy has baby lion.”

He opened his toy’s fabric pocket.

Inside was a tracking receiver linked to a second tag Claire had sewn into her coat after Daniel began following her.

My daughter had prepared for danger.

The signal moved east.

I sent the location to police captain Maria Alvarez, one of the few officials I trusted.

For years, my family settled threats privately.

That tradition had protected guilty men and silenced victims.

I would not repeat it.

Daniel and Preston were transported under armed guard.

We followed Claire’s signal to an abandoned shipping warehouse.

The building belonged to a company Lorenzo secretly controlled.

Police surrounded it.

A message arrived ordering me to enter alone with Daniel.

Captain Alvarez objected.

“They want you exposed.”

“They already have Claire.”

“We use Daniel, not you.”

Daniel was fitted with a microphone and taken toward the warehouse.

He stopped near the entrance.

“I want immunity.”

“You are not negotiating from freedom,” Alvarez said.

“I know who ordered Salvatore’s poisoning.”

“So do we.”

“No, you don’t.”

He looked at me.

“L is not Lorenzo.”

The warehouse door opened.

A voice ordered Daniel inside.

I recognized it.

Lucian Romano.

He led the Romano family, our oldest rival.

Years earlier, he asked to marry Claire.

She refused him.

I supported her decision, and Lucian never forgave either of us.

Daniel entered.

Police listened through his microphone.

“Where is Claire?” he asked.

“Where is Preston?”

“Salvatore kept him.”

“You were told to bring both.”

“I could only get myself out.”

Lucian cursed.

Claire cried out somewhere nearby.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The trust form failed.”

“Then the child becomes the key.”

My hands tightened.

“What do they mean?” Alvarez whispered.

I knew.

My will placed the legitimate Moretti companies into a trust for Leo if Claire predeceased me.

Daniel would control Leo’s inheritance as his legal father.

If both Claire and I died, Daniel could seize everything through the child.

The violence in their home had been preparation.

He wanted Claire frightened, compliant, and ready to sign.

The poisoning would remove me.

The forged medical records would declare Claire unstable.

Then Daniel would control Leo and the companies.

Lucian asked about the boy.

“He is still at the estate,” Daniel replied.

“Then why are you here?”

“Because Salvatore forced me.”

The microphone shifted.

Daniel whispered, “They’re listening.”

Gunfire erupted inside.

Police breached the doors.

I entered behind them despite Alvarez’s order.

Claire sat tied to a chair near a loading bay.

Lucian held a gun against her head.

Daniel stood several feet away with his hands raised.

He had warned Lucian, yet Lucian looked ready to kill him too.

“Release her,” I said.

Lucian smiled.

“The lion finally leaves his den.”

Claire’s cheek was bruised, but her eyes remained focused.

“Papa, the floor.”

A thin wire ran from her chair toward stacked fuel containers.

A pressure device sat beneath one leg.

If she stood incorrectly, it could ignite the warehouse.

Lucian moved toward the rear exit.

“Drop your weapons, or she burns.”

Police lowered their guns.

I did the same.

Daniel suddenly ran toward the side door.

Lucian fired.

The bullet struck metal near him.

Daniel fell and covered his head.

The man who terrorized my daughter had no courage when danger turned toward him.

Claire looked at me.

“Leo?”

“Safe.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

Lucian reached the door.

A small alarm sounded outside.

The rear exit opened.

Preston entered with two of my guards at gunpoint.

He had escaped during transport with help from a corrupt driver.

Lucian’s smile disappeared.

“You brought Moretti’s men here?”

“I brought leverage.”

Preston pushed the guards forward.

Then he aimed his weapon at Daniel.

“You failed.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

“We planned this together.”

“You became careless.”

The truth emerged in their faces.

Preston was not merely helping Daniel.

He intended to replace him.

Lucian wanted control of the Moretti companies.

Preston wanted Daniel removed after the takeover.

Daniel finally understood he had betrayed everyone for men who considered him disposable.

He pointed toward the pressure wire.

“The release switch is in Lucian’s pocket.”

Lucian turned his gun toward him.

Police fired first.

The weapon fell from Lucian’s hand.

Preston ran.

My guards tackled him near the exit.

Captain Alvarez recovered the switch.

Bomb specialists stabilized Claire’s chair and cut her free.

The moment she stood, she ran into my arms.

“I thought I would never see Leo again.”

“You are going home to him.”

Police handcuffed Daniel beside his brother.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“I helped save you.”

She stared at him.

“You warned the man holding a gun to my head.”

“I told them about the switch.”

“Because Preston betrayed you.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Claire stepped closer.

“You never protected me. You only changed sides when you became afraid.”

Officers led him away.

Lucian survived his wound and was arrested.

As we left the warehouse, Alvarez showed me a recovered message from Preston’s phone.

It had been sent before the birthday party.

Once Salvatore falls, Lorenzo takes blame. Claire is declared unstable. Daniel controls the boy until the signatures clear. Then remove Daniel.

The reply came from Lucian.

And if the child talks?

May you like

Preston had answered with four words.

Children can disappear too.
