Chapter 7

The Woman Who Married Me for a Lie
I stared at our wedding photograph for nearly an hour.
Denise stood beside me in a white dress.
Her smile was beautiful.
Her hand rested against my chest.
Malik stood near us in a small navy suit.
He looked happy.
Hopeful.
Like a boy who believed his family was finally becoming whole again.
I remembered telling him Denise would never replace his mother.
But she would love him.
Protect him.
Help us build a new life.
Now I wondered how much of that promise had been based on lies.
Detective Grant had confirmed that Denise's brother was connected to the events preceding Elena's death.
But investigators still needed stronger evidence before bringing every charge.
Rachel warned me to remain careful.
I agreed.
Then she helped me file for divorce.
The papers described Denise's conduct toward Malik.
The forged signatures.
The attempted guardianship petition.
And the financial concerns involving the trust.
I signed them without hesitation.
It hurt.
Not because I wanted Denise back.
But because I finally accepted that the marriage I'd believed in never truly existed.
That afternoon, Mom came over.
She found me sitting in the living room.
Our wedding picture lay on the table.
She sat beside me.
"Marcus."
I looked up.
"Yeah?"
"You've been blaming yourself."
I swallowed.
"I brought her here."
Mom nodded.
"Yes."
I looked away.
She continued.
"But Denise chose what she did."
My eyes filled.
"I should have seen it."
Mom squeezed my hand.
"Then learn from what happened."
I looked at her.
"How?"
"Listen to your son."
Her voice softened.
"And believe people when their actions show you who they are."
I nodded slowly.
Then she smiled sadly.
"Elena would want you to protect Malik, not punish yourself forever."
I began crying.
Mom hugged me.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Grant.
I answered.
"Marcus, we have a development."
My heart tightened.
"What happened?"
"We recovered additional communications between Denise and Leonard."
I stood.
"What do they say?"
Grant paused.
"They discuss Elena's investigation."
My stomach twisted.
"And?"
"Denise agreed to help Leonard retrieve documents after Elena died."
I closed my eyes.
Grant continued.
"Later messages refer to you and Malik."
My hands began shaking.
I looked toward the hallway.
Malik was upstairs studying.
"Do they mention my son?"
"Yes."
I swallowed.
"What do they say?"
Grant took a breath.
"Leonard believed Elena's trust might contain assets or records connected to her investigation."
I felt sick.
"And Denise?"
"She suggested gaining access through marriage."
My knees weakened.
I sat down.
Marriage.
Our marriage.
Not love.
Not companionship.
Access.
I closed my eyes.
"She planned everything."
Grant answered carefully.
"The messages support that conclusion."
I felt tears streaming down my face.
Then she added, "Marcus, we're preparing additional warrants."
I swallowed.
"Will she be arrested?"
"If the evidence supports charges, we'll proceed."
I nodded.
"Please keep Malik safe."
Grant's voice softened.
"We're taking the threats seriously."
That evening, Denise called from an unfamiliar number.
I recognized her voice immediately.
"Marcus."
My stomach tightened.
I almost hung up.
But Rachel had advised me to preserve unwanted communications.
So I kept the call brief.
"What do you want?"
Denise began crying.
"Please don't end our marriage."
I stared at the wall.
"You hurt my son."
"I made mistakes."
I felt anger rising.
"You frightened him into signing legal documents."
She sniffled.
"I was trying to protect our family."
I almost laughed.
"From what?"
She hesitated.
"Your mother."
I froze.
"What?"
"Evelyn has always hated me."
I shook my head.
"My mother watched you abuse Malik."
Denise's voice hardened.
"That boy has been turning everyone against me."
I felt disgust rise.
"Don't talk about him like that."
She paused.
Then softened her voice.
"Marcus, honey, we can fix this."
I looked at the wedding photograph.
"No."
She began crying again.
"Please."
I took a breath.
"I know about Leonard."
Silence.
Then a quiet whisper.
"What?"
"I know about Carter Holdings."
Her breathing changed.
I continued.
"I know Elena was investigating your family."
Denise said nothing.
I felt cold.
"And I know you were connected to the plan to frighten her."
For several seconds, the line remained silent.
Then Denise whispered, "You don't understand."
I stared.
"Then explain."
She began shaking.
At least, that's how her voice sounded.
"Leonard made me do things."
I closed my eyes.
"What things?"
She hesitated.
"Marcus, please."
I waited.
Then she whispered, "I never meant for Elena to die."
My heart stopped.
I couldn't breathe.
Denise began sobbing.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
I felt the room spinning.
I wanted to shout.
Demand everything.
But I forced myself to stay calm.
"What was supposed to happen?"
She didn't answer.
Then the line disconnected.
I stared at the phone.
My hands shook.
I immediately contacted Detective Grant and preserved the call details.
She told me not to pursue Denise myself.
I agreed.
But I couldn't stop thinking about her words.
I never meant for Elena to die.
It wasn't a denial.
It was an admission that she knew a plan existed.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Elena hadn't just been investigating financial fraud.
She'd been trying to protect families from people who believed money mattered more than human lives.
My son had inherited her courage.
Even while frightened, he'd finally spoken.
And that courage had exposed the woman who tried to destroy us.
The next morning, Detective Grant called again.
Her voice was urgent.
"Marcus, Denise has been located."
My heart pounded.
"Where?"
"At Leonard's office."
I swallowed.
"And?"
"Investigators are executing warrants."
I closed my eyes.
Then Grant said something that made me go still.
"We also recovered a document from Elena's old files."
I sat up.
"What document?"
"A handwritten letter."
My heart tightened.
"From Elena?"
"Yes."
I stopped breathing.
Grant paused.
"It's addressed to Malik."
Tears filled my eyes.
My wife had left our son a letter.
May you like
A letter I never knew existed.
And somehow, the woman who hurt him had spent years trying to keep it hidden.
