Chapter 6

The Witness Nobody Believed
I barely slept after finding Elena's recording.
Her voice stayed with me all night.
I'm frightened, Marcus.
I kept hearing those words.
For four years, I'd believed my wife had died because life was unfair.
Now I wondered whether someone had taken her from us.
I looked at Malik sleeping in his room.
Then at the framed photograph of Elena on his desk.
My chest tightened.
He had already lost his mother.
Now he'd nearly lost his inheritance.
His safety.
And possibly his father.
I felt anger rising.
But I needed answers.
Not revenge.
Answers.
The next morning, Detective Grant called.
"Marcus, we located the witness."
My heart pounded.
"From Elena's accident?"
"Yes."
"Is he willing to talk?"
"He is."
I sat down.
"Who is he?"
"His name is Thomas Reed."
Grant explained that Thomas had been driving behind Elena's car on the night of the collision.
He reported seeing a dark SUV following her closely.
Then the SUV moved toward her lane.
Elena swerved.
And the truck struck her vehicle.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I'd blamed the truck driver.
Now I remembered something.
The truck driver had always insisted Elena moved into his lane unexpectedly.
I thought he was avoiding responsibility.
What if he'd been telling the truth?
Grant continued.
"Thomas provided a partial license plate number."
My heart tightened.
"Was it investigated?"
"Not thoroughly."
I felt sick.
"Why?"
"His statement was considered inconsistent with other evidence."
I looked down.
"Did he change his story?"
"No."
Grant paused.
"He has maintained the same account for four years."
My stomach twisted.
Then she said, "We're reviewing whether the SUV can be identified through archived records."
I nodded.
"Please."
That afternoon, Rachel called with updates on Malik's guardianship case.
The court had suspended further action on Denise's petition pending review of the disputed documents.
An independent child advocate had been appointed.
The trust accounts remained protected.
And Denise had been instructed not to contact Malik directly while the matter was reviewed.
I felt relief.
For the first time, I knew my son had protection beyond my promises.
But I also knew the investigation into Elena's death could change everything.
I sat with Malik that evening.
He was building a model airplane at his desk.
I watched him carefully.
"How was school?"
He shrugged.
"Okay."
I smiled.
"Anything interesting?"
He hesitated.
"Some kids heard about Denise."
My stomach tightened.
"What did they say?"
He looked down.
"That I'm the reason you two are fighting."
My heart broke.
I sat beside him.
"Malik, you're not responsible for our marriage."
He nodded weakly.
I continued.
"Denise made choices."
I touched his shoulder.
"And I'm responsible for how I respond."
He looked at me.
"Are you getting divorced?"
I swallowed.
"I've started talking to a lawyer about it."
His eyes filled.
"Because of me?"
I shook my head.
"Because Denise hurt you and broke my trust."
He stared at me.
I continued.
"Protecting you isn't something you have to apologize for."
He began crying.
I hugged him.
Then he whispered, "Dad, I thought you liked her more than me."
My chest tightened painfully.
I pulled back.
"Never."
He looked uncertain.
I took his hands.
"You're my son."
My voice broke.
"You were here before Denise."
I smiled through tears.
"And you'll be my son for the rest of my life."
He hugged me tightly.
For the first time in weeks, he smiled.
The next morning, Detective Grant called again.
Her voice was urgent.
"We identified the SUV."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"The partial plate and archived traffic footage led us to a vehicle registered to Carter Holdings."
I couldn't breathe.
Denise's family business.
I stood.
"Who was driving?"
"We're still verifying."
I felt sick.
Grant continued.
"But the vehicle was assigned to a company employee named Calvin Brooks."
I frowned.
"Who is Calvin Brooks?"
"A former security contractor."
My stomach tightened.
"Did he know Denise?"
"Yes."
I closed my eyes.
Grant paused.
"Marcus, we need to discuss your wife's financial investigation."
I swallowed.
"Okay."
"Elena had reported suspicious transactions involving Carter Holdings shortly before her death."
I nodded.
"I found the files."
Grant continued.
"We've now confirmed that some of those transactions were tied to accounts controlled by Leonard Carter."
My chest tightened.
"And Denise?"
"We're reviewing her role."
I stared at the floor.
I wanted to scream.
But Grant's voice remained calm.
"We're getting closer."
I nodded.
Then she said something that made me freeze.
"Calvin Brooks has agreed to speak with investigators."
My heart pounded.
"Will he tell the truth?"
"We hope so."
That afternoon, Grant called once more.
This time, her voice sounded different.
"Marcus, Calvin gave us a statement."
I stopped breathing.
"What did he say?"
A pause.
Then she answered.
"He admitted following Elena's car."
My knees weakened.
I sat down.
Grant continued.
"He said he was instructed to frighten her into surrendering financial records."
I covered my mouth.
"By whom?"
Grant hesitated.
"Leonard Carter."
I closed my eyes.
Tears streamed down my face.
But she wasn't finished.
"Calvin also says Denise knew about the plan."
My heart stopped.
I stared at the wall.
The woman I'd married.
The woman who had stood beside me at Elena's memorial.
The woman who promised to help raise our son.
She knew.
She knew about the threat against Elena.
And she'd entered our family anyway.
I couldn't breathe.
Then Grant added something worse.
"Marcus, we believe Denise may have married you to gain access to evidence Elena left behind."
I felt the room spinning.
Our marriage.
The affection.
The promises.
All of it might have been part of a plan.
And suddenly, I realized Malik hadn't simply been unlucky enough to have a cruel stepmother.
May you like
He had been targeted because he was Elena's son.
The one person who would eventually inherit the evidence and money Denise wanted to control.
