Chapter 3

The Woman Who Wanted My Son's Inheritance
I stared at the guardianship petition until the letters blurred.
Denise had accused me of being an unfit father.
The same woman who had just thrown dinner into my son's face.
The same woman who had frightened him into signing papers.
She wanted legal control over him.
I looked at Mom.
"Why?"
Her eyes filled.
"I think it has something to do with Elena's trust."
My stomach tightened.
Elena.
My first wife.
Malik's mother.
The woman I'd loved since college.
She died four years earlier after a sudden illness.
Before she passed, she established a trust for our son.
The money came from her family's property holdings and life insurance.
Malik would receive access to portions of it when he became an adult.
Until then, I served as trustee.
The trust wasn't enormous.
But it was enough to pay for college.
A first home.
And the kind of security Elena always wanted him to have.
I had never told Malik the exact amount.
He was twelve.
His job was to be a child.
Not worry about investments.
But Denise knew.
I'd discussed the estate documents with her before our wedding.
I trusted her.
Now I felt sick.
"How much does she know?" Mom asked.
I rubbed my forehead.
"Everything."
My mother closed her eyes.
"Oh, Marcus."
I sat down.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Denise had married into our family two years earlier.
At first, she treated Malik beautifully.
She helped with homework.
Attended school events.
Baked birthday cakes.
She told everyone she loved him like her own child.
But gradually, things changed.
She began complaining about his expenses.
His clothes.
His activities.
The food he ate.
She told me I spoiled him.
That I was too soft because Elena had died.
I'd argued with her more than once.
But she'd always apologized.
And I'd believed her.
Now I wondered how much had happened while I worked late.
I looked at Mom.
"Did you suspect this?"
She hesitated.
"Not at first."
I swallowed.
"Then when?"
She sat beside me.
"About six weeks ago."
My chest tightened.
"What happened?"
"Malik came to my house after school."
I nodded.
"He seemed quieter than usual."
She wiped her cheeks.
"I made him a sandwich."
I waited.
"He ate it so quickly that I asked whether he'd had lunch."
My stomach dropped.
"He said Denise had stopped putting money on his school lunch account."
I stared.
"What?"
Mom nodded.
"He told me she'd said he needed to learn how expensive food was."
My hands clenched.
I remembered the school emails.
Several notices about low lunch balances.
I'd forwarded them to Denise because she handled most of the household scheduling.
She told me the school system was making mistakes.
I'd believed her.
My mother continued.
"Then he told me she sometimes made him eat dinner after everyone else."
I felt sick.
"Why?"
"She said he needed to earn privileges."
I stood.
I couldn't sit still.
I paced across the room.
My son had been going hungry.
In my house.
While I was paying every bill.
While Denise bought expensive clothes and went to lunch with her friends.
I covered my face.
"How did I miss this?"
Mom stood.
"Marcus."
I shook my head.
"I should have known."
She approached.
"You're responsible for protecting him now. But you didn't cause Denise's cruelty."
I looked at her.
She continued.
"Blaming yourself won't help Malik."
I swallowed.
"Then what will?"
She squeezed my arm.
"Listening."
I nodded.
"And making sure he knows you believe him."
I took a slow breath.
Then I called our family attorney.
Her name was Rachel Coleman.
She had helped Elena establish the trust.
Rachel answered despite the late hour.
"Marcus?"
"I need help."
She heard something in my voice.
"What happened?"
I explained everything.
The food.
The threats.
The papers.
The guardianship petition.
Rachel listened quietly.
Then asked me to send the photograph.
I did.
A few minutes later, she called back.
Her voice was serious.
"Marcus, where did you get this?"
"From my mother."
"Do you know whether it was filed?"
I shook my head.
"Not yet."
Rachel took a breath.
"We need to verify its status immediately."
My stomach tightened.
"Can Denise actually take custody?"
"Not simply because she filed a petition."
I exhaled.
Rachel continued.
"But false allegations can create serious complications if they're not challenged."
I nodded.
"What do I do?"
"Preserve everything. Contact information from the law office, messages, documents, and anything Malik remembers."
I swallowed.
"And my son?"
"Consider having him speak with a qualified child therapist who can help document his experiences without pressuring him."
I nodded.
"Okay."
Rachel paused.
"Marcus, there's something else."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Has Denise recently asked about the trust?"
I froze.
I remembered.
Three weeks earlier, she'd suggested moving the trust funds into a new investment account.
She claimed she knew someone who could earn higher returns.
I'd refused.
Then she'd become furious.
"Yes."
Rachel's voice sharpened.
"What did she ask?"
I explained.
A long silence followed.
Then Rachel said, "Marcus, I think we need to review whether anyone has attempted to access those funds."
My heart pounded.
"Why?"
"Because if Denise were appointed guardian under certain circumstances, she might try to seek control over financial decisions involving Malik."
I sat down.
The room seemed to tilt.
My wife wanted Malik's money.
Not his love.
Not his future.
His inheritance.
Rachel promised to begin reviewing the records first thing in the morning.
After the call, I went upstairs.
Malik was asleep.
His bedroom light glowed softly.
I stood beside his bed.
For several minutes, I simply watched him breathe.
He looked so young.
Too young for the fear he'd been carrying.
I noticed his school backpack beside the desk.
It was partly unzipped.
A folded paper stuck out.
I recognized the logo.
Palmer and Associates.
I carefully removed it.
It was another copy of the document Denise had taken him to sign.
But this one contained an additional page.
A financial disclosure.
I scanned the numbers.
Then stopped.
My stomach dropped.
The trust's total value was listed.
Two million, four hundred thousand dollars.
And beneath the proposed guardianship terms was a request for immediate access to a substantial portion of the funds.
I stared at the paper.
Then I noticed the reason given.
EMERGENCY CARE AND EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES.
My hands began shaking.
Denise had been claiming my son needed expensive care that nobody had ever discussed with me.
I looked toward his bed.
He was sleeping peacefully.
Unaware that someone had been using his name to reach his inheritance.
Then I saw one final detail.
A signature appeared beneath the financial request.
Not Denise's.
Not Malik's.
Mine.
Except I hadn't signed anything.
Someone had forged my name.
And suddenly, I realized this wasn't only about cruelty.
May you like
It was fraud.
And whoever helped Denise prepare these documents had been willing to steal from a child.
