Surprise

Chapter 5

"My brother?"

My father's voice sounded almost unfamiliar.

I stared at Vanessa.

Arthur Bennett had only one brother.

Uncle Victor.

He was three years younger than my father and had spent most of his adult life managing business ventures that never seemed to succeed.

I remembered him from childhood.

He brought expensive gifts.

Made big promises.

And always seemed to need another loan.

My father had helped him repeatedly.

I had never imagined he might be involved in something like this.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Victor introduced me to Richard."

My father stared at her.

"Why?"

She hesitated.

"Because he said you were making dangerous decisions."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"What decisions?"

"Expanding too quickly. Trusting the wrong people."

I looked at her.

"You mean people like your own wife?"

She ignored me.

My father stepped closer.

"Did Victor help prepare those documents?"

Vanessa nodded.

My stomach dropped.

"Why would he do that?"

She looked toward Daniel.

"Because he believed the company should be managed differently."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That isn't an answer."

Vanessa swallowed.

"Victor said Arthur had promised him a greater role."

My father shook his head.

"I never promised him control."

She looked away.

"I know that now."

I stared at her.

The words sounded convenient.

Too convenient.

She had been caught.

Now she was trying to place the blame somewhere else.

Daniel closed his laptop.

"We need independent verification of every claim."

My father nodded.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"You will not participate in any foundation business until this is investigated."

She gasped.

"Arthur!"

He continued.

"And I want you to stay elsewhere tonight."

Her face changed.

"What?"

"I need space to protect my daughters and determine what happened."

She looked furious.

"This is my home!"

My father shook his head.

"We will have the attorneys address the living arrangements."

Vanessa turned toward me.

Her eyes burned.

"You did this."

I felt anger rise.

But before I could answer, Arthur spoke.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"Maya didn't create those documents."

Vanessa froze.

"She didn't arrange secret transfers."

He continued.

"And she didn't push herself onto the pavement."

Tears filled my eyes.

For years, I'd wanted my father to say something like that.

Not because I wanted him to hate Vanessa.

Because I wanted him to see me.

To believe me.

To protect me.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then grabbed her handbag.

"You'll regret this."

She marched toward the door.

Daniel stepped aside.

My father didn't stop her.

When the door closed, the silence felt enormous.

I looked at him.

"Dad?"

He turned.

His eyes were wet.

"I'm sorry."

I swallowed.

"For what?"

He looked devastated.

"For not listening sooner."

My throat tightened.

I wanted to tell him it was okay.

But it wasn't.

Not yet.

I had spent six years feeling like a guest in my own family.

I'd learned to stay quiet during dinners.

To apologize even when I hadn't done anything wrong.

To avoid asking my father for attention because Vanessa always said he was busy.

I had become an expert at making myself smaller.

And the man who should have noticed had been too distracted to see.

"I needed you," I whispered.

My father's face crumpled.

"I know."

"I was fourteen."

He nodded.

"I know."

"I didn't need another expensive gift."

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

"I needed you to believe me."

Arthur covered his face.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he stepped forward.

"Can I hug you?"

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

He wrapped his arms around me.

And I cried like I hadn't cried in years.

Not because everything was fixed.

But because, for the first time, he wasn't asking me to forgive Vanessa to keep the peace.

He was simply listening.

After a while, Daniel reminded us that the investigation needed to continue.

My father contacted the foundation's board chair.

The signature ceremony was canceled.

The revised documents were withdrawn pending review.

Richard's access to sensitive financial systems was suspended.

And Victor was notified that he was not authorized to act on behalf of the Bennett companies.

The gala continued without the planned business announcement.

My father made a brief public statement about postponing administrative changes.

He didn't mention the family conflict.

I was grateful.

The last thing I wanted was for Lily's fear to become gossip.

Later that evening, I found my little sister sitting alone in a quiet guest room.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

Her cream dress was wrinkled.

Her braids had loosened.

When she saw me, her face changed.

"Maya!"

She ran toward me.

I knelt and hugged her carefully.

"Hey, sweetheart."

She pulled back.

"Are you okay?"

I smiled weakly.

"I'm going to be."

Her eyes filled.

"Mommy said you were leaving."

My heart tightened.

I looked at her.

"What?"

Lily swallowed.

"She said after tonight, you wouldn't be part of our family anymore."

I felt cold.

"Did she say why?"

Lily nodded.

"She said Daddy would understand."

My stomach twisted.

I held her hands.

"Lily, nobody gets to decide whether you're my sister."

She looked up.

"Really?"

"Really."

She started crying.

"I thought you didn't like me anymore."

My heart broke.

I hugged her tightly.

"I love you, Lily."

She clung to me.

"Even if Mommy's mad?"

I swallowed.

"Even then."

For a while, we simply held each other.

Then Lily whispered something against my shoulder.

"Maya?"

"Yes?"

"Mommy told me to put something in your room."

I went still.

"What?"

She pulled back.

Her little face was filled with fear.

"She said it was a surprise."

My stomach tightened.

"What kind of surprise?"

Lily looked down.

"A little black box."

I stared at her.

"Where did she get it?"

"From Uncle Victor."

My blood turned cold.

I took a slow breath.

"Where did you put it?"

Lily swallowed.

"In your dresser."

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Then I looked toward the hallway.

The pieces were beginning to fit together.

Vanessa had planned to make me leave the family.

Victor had helped create suspicious business documents.

And now something had been placed in my bedroom without my knowledge.

I looked back at Lily.

"Sweetheart, did Mommy tell you what was inside the box?"

May you like

She shook her head.

Then whispered, "She said if Daddy found it, he'd never trust you again."
