Surprise

Chapter 2

My father didn't shout.

That was how I knew he was truly furious.

Arthur Bennett had a temper, but he rarely lost control in public.

When business partners disappointed him, he became quiet.

When employees lied to him, his voice turned cold.

And when someone threatened his daughters, something in his expression changed completely.

He looked at Vanessa.

"I'm waiting."

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Arthur, you're making this ridiculous."

My father didn't move.

"What did you tell Lily to lie about?"

She glanced toward the hotel entrance.

Several guests had stopped walking.

A security officer was watching us.

I could see Vanessa calculating the damage.

Her greatest fear had never been hurting someone.

It was being seen hurting someone.

"Can we please discuss this privately?" she whispered.

My father looked at Lily.

"Sweetheart, are you afraid?"

Lily nodded.

My heart broke.

Arthur crouched beside her.

"Are you afraid of telling me the truth?"

She looked toward Vanessa.

Then nodded again.

My father closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked devastated.

"Baby, you never have to be afraid to tell me something."

Lily began crying.

Vanessa reached toward her.

"Come here, Lily."

But Lily stepped behind our father.

That tiny movement told me more than a hundred arguments ever could.

My father noticed it too.

He stood.

"Vanessa, go inside."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Go inside the hotel. Wait in the private lounge."

Her expression hardened.

"You're dismissing me?"

"I'm giving you an opportunity to stop making this worse."

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes narrowed.

"This is exactly what she wanted."

I felt anger rise.

"Stop blaming me!"

My father turned.

"Maya, sweetheart, let me handle this."

I swallowed.

For years, those words had meant silence.

Let me handle this.

It usually meant Vanessa would speak to him privately.

Then he would return and tell me I had misunderstood.

But tonight, something was different.

He looked directly at his wife.

"Go inside."

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she turned sharply and marched toward the hotel.

Her heels struck the stone driveway.

I watched her disappear through the revolving doors.

Only then did my father turn back to us.

"Lily, can you tell me what happened?"

She wiped her face.

I crouched beside her.

"You can tell Daddy."

Lily looked at me.

"I'm sorry, Maya."

My throat tightened.

"For what, sweetheart?"

She sniffled.

"For not helping you."

I shook my head.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"But Mommy said—"

She stopped.

My father knelt beside us.

"What did Mommy say?"

Lily twisted the ribbon around her waist.

"She said if I told you what happened, you wouldn't love me anymore."

I felt sick.

My father went completely still.

"She said that?"

Lily nodded.

He looked away for a moment.

I saw his jaw trembling.

Then he turned back.

"Lily, listen carefully."

She looked up.

"There is nothing you could tell me that would make me stop loving you."

Her eyes filled.

"Really?"

"Nothing."

She threw her arms around his neck.

He held her tightly.

I turned away, wiping my own tears.

Then Lily whispered something against his shoulder.

"Mommy took Maya's phone."

I froze.

My father slowly pulled back.

"What?"

Lily looked at me.

"Inside the car."

My heart pounded.

I'd known Vanessa had my phone.

But I hadn't understood why she'd been so desperate to keep it.

Before leaving the mansion, I'd been recording a voice message for my best friend, Tasha.

I hadn't finished it.

Then Vanessa had climbed into the limousine and demanded that I delete something.

I remembered her expression.

The sudden panic.

The way she had grabbed my wrist.

My father turned toward me.

"Maya, what is Lily talking about?"

I swallowed.

"Vanessa took my phone."

"Why?"

I looked toward the hotel doors.

"Because she thought I'd recorded something."

My father's eyes narrowed.

"What something?"

I hesitated.

I hadn't planned to tell him tonight.

Not during his charity gala.

Not while hundreds of guests waited inside.

But Vanessa had already made sure the evening was ruined.

I took a breath.

"Earlier today, I heard Vanessa talking to someone in your home office."

Arthur frowned.

"My office?"

I nodded.

"She was on the phone."

"What did she say?"

My hands started shaking.

"She said you were going to sign the papers tonight."

My father's expression changed.

"What papers?"

I swallowed.

"She said after tonight, everything would finally belong to her."

The silence that followed was terrifying.

My father stared at me.

For a moment, I thought he hadn't understood.

Then he asked quietly, "Did she say who she was talking to?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Did you record the conversation?"

"Not intentionally."

I explained that I'd been sending Tasha a voice message while walking past the office.

I heard Vanessa speaking loudly through the partially open door.

When I realized she was discussing my father, I stopped.

The recording had continued.

I hadn't listened to it.

Before I could, Vanessa appeared.

She saw my phone.

Then demanded to know what I'd heard.

I refused to answer.

She followed me into the limousine.

And everything escalated.

My father listened without interrupting.

Then he looked at Lily.

"Sweetheart, what happened in the car?"

Lily swallowed.

"Mommy grabbed Maya's phone."

I nodded.

"She tried to unlock it."

Lily continued.

"Maya said it was private."

My father looked at me.

"And then?"

I felt tears gathering again.

"Vanessa said I had no right to interfere in your marriage."

Lily looked down.

"Then Mommy told me to say Maya screamed at me."

My father's face tightened.

"Did Maya scream at you?"

Lily shook her head.

"No."

I saw the pain in his eyes.

He looked toward the hotel.

Then back at me.

"Where is your phone now?"

I swallowed.

"Vanessa put it in her purse."

My father stood.

For a moment, he looked toward the limousine.

Then he removed his own phone.

He called someone.

"Daniel, I need you at the front entrance immediately."

I recognized the name.

Daniel Brooks.

My father's longtime attorney.

He was attending the gala.

My father continued.

"And bring the event security director."

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

"Dad, what's happening?"

He looked at me.

"Maya, were you hurt when Vanessa pushed you?"

I nodded.

He looked at my scraped palms.

His expression darkened.

"Then we're going to document that."

I swallowed.

"And the phone?"

"We're going to recover it properly."

For the first time that night, I felt like my father was actually listening.

But then Lily tugged his sleeve.

"Daddy?"

He crouched.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

She looked toward the hotel doors.

"Mommy said something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?" Arthur asked.

Lily's voice became very small.

"She said after tonight, Maya wouldn't live with us anymore."

My breath caught.

My father looked at me.

May you like

Then at the hotel.

And whispered, "What have you done, Vanessa?"
