Surprise

Chapter 1

The first thing I felt was Vanessa's hand slamming into my shoulder.

The second was the pavement.

I fell hard beside the black limousine, my palms scraping against the stone driveway as my light-blue evening gown spread around my knees.

"Stay away from this family!"

My stepmother stood over me, pointing one perfectly manicured finger at my face.

I looked up in disbelief.

"Vanessa, what is wrong with you?"

"Don't you dare say my name like we're equals!"

Her burgundy dress shimmered beneath the bright lights outside the Grand Wellington Hotel.

Behind her, gold revolving doors reflected the guests arriving for my father's annual charity gala.

Music drifted through the entrance.

People laughed.

A camera flashed somewhere nearby.

And there I was, twenty years old, on my hands and knees because my stepmother had shoved me in public.

"Get up," Vanessa hissed. "You're embarrassing yourself."

I stared at her.

"You pushed me!"

She bent closer.

"And I'll do worse if you keep trying to destroy my family."

My chest tightened.

Her family.

Those words hurt more than the fall.

I had been Arthur Bennett's daughter for twenty years.

Vanessa had been married to him for six.

Yet somehow, she had convinced herself that I was the outsider.

I struggled to stand, but my heel had caught beneath the hem of my gown.

Pain shot through my knee.

Vanessa glanced toward the hotel entrance.

Then her expression changed.

Instantly.

The cold anger vanished.

Her eyes widened with false concern.

"Oh, Maya!"

I heard footsteps.

Heavy.

Fast.

Then my father's voice thundered across the driveway.

"MAYA!"

Arthur Bennett came running through the revolving doors.

My father was a powerful businessman, a man who could silence entire conference rooms with one look.

But right then, he wasn't thinking about business.

He was looking at his daughter lying on the ground.

He dropped beside me.

"Baby, what happened?"

His hands trembled as he helped me sit upright.

I looked at him.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I hadn't heard him call me baby in months.

Not since Vanessa began insisting I was too old to expect special treatment.

"Dad..."

My voice broke.

He examined my bleeding palms.

"Who did this?"

Before I could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

"Arthur, thank goodness you're here."

I turned toward her.

She placed a hand against her chest.

"Maya caused another scene."

My father looked up.

"What?"

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"She became hysterical inside the limousine. She frightened Lily, started shouting, and refused to calm down."

I stared at her.

"That's a lie!"

Vanessa pointed at me.

"See? This is exactly what I'm talking about."

My father helped me to my feet.

I clutched his arm.

"Dad, she pushed me."

His expression changed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

"What?"

I swallowed.

"Vanessa shoved me onto the pavement."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Oh, please. She stumbled because she was throwing a tantrum."

I felt tears spill down my face.

"Why are you lying?"

"Because somebody has to tell your father the truth."

My father stepped between us.

"Enough."

His voice was so sharp that even the hotel security guard near the entrance turned toward us.

Vanessa straightened.

"Arthur, she's trying to ruin tonight."

He looked at her.

"What happened inside the car?"

Vanessa didn't hesitate.

"Maya started insulting me. She yelled in front of Lily and said she wished I had never married you."

I shook my head.

"That's not what happened."

My father's eyes narrowed.

"Then what did?"

I opened my mouth.

But Vanessa interrupted.

"She scared Lily so badly that the child started crying."

I looked toward the limousine.

Its windows were dark.

The rear door remained closed.

Lily was inside.

My eight-year-old half sister.

My father's youngest daughter.

The little girl I had loved since the day she was born.

And the only person who knew exactly what Vanessa had done inside that car.

I wiped my cheeks.

"Dad, ask Lily."

Vanessa stiffened.

My father noticed.

He turned toward the limousine.

"Then Lily can tell me herself."

Vanessa moved quickly.

"Arthur, no."

He looked back at her.

"Why not?"

"She's upset."

"Then I'll speak to her gently."

"She's only eight!"

"She's old enough to tell me what frightened her."

Vanessa's expression tightened.

I saw something flicker in her eyes.

Fear.

Not concern for Lily.

Fear of what Lily might say.

My father took a step toward the vehicle.

Vanessa caught his sleeve.

"Arthur, please. This isn't necessary."

He looked down at her hand.

Then back at her face.

"Let go."

She released him.

The limousine door suddenly opened.

A tiny figure appeared beneath the interior light.

Lily stepped carefully onto the pavement.

She wore a cream-colored party dress with a satin ribbon around her waist.

Her long braids fell over her shoulders.

Her eyes were red.

But she wasn't crying anymore.

She looked frightened.

Vanessa immediately turned.

"Lily, get back in the car."

Lily stopped.

My father raised one hand.

"No."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Arthur."

"Let her speak."

Lily looked from her mother to me.

Then she walked slowly toward our father.

Her little hand reached for his.

"Daddy?"

Arthur crouched.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

She swallowed.

I watched her glance toward Vanessa.

Her mother gave her a warning look.

A look I recognized.

I had seen Vanessa use it during family dinners.

When Lily accidentally interrupted her.

When she spilled something.

When she answered a question Vanessa didn't want answered.

It was the look that meant silence.

But this time, Lily didn't obey.

She tightened her grip on our father's fingers.

"Daddy... Maya didn't do anything."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

I stopped breathing.

Arthur looked at his youngest daughter.

"What do you mean?"

Lily's lower lip trembled.

"Maya wasn't yelling at me."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Lily, sweetheart, you're confused."

Lily shook her head.

"No, Mommy."

The entire driveway seemed to go silent.

My father stood very still.

"Lily, tell me what happened."

She looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

And whispered the words that changed everything.

"Mom told me to lie about what happened inside the car."

My father's hand tightened around hers.

Vanessa froze.

For the first time since I'd known her, she looked completely unprepared.

Arthur slowly turned toward his wife.

His expression was colder than I'd ever seen.

"Vanessa."

She opened her mouth.

He took one step closer.

"What exactly did you tell my daughter to lie about?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Lily began crying.

I looked at my father.

And suddenly, I knew the night wasn't going to end with a simple apology.

Because Lily hadn't revealed the entire truth.

May you like

Not yet.

And whatever Vanessa had done inside that limousine was important enough that she'd been willing to hurt me to keep it hidden.
