Chapter 9

The trial began six months later.
By then, Grace had learned to smile.
Her tiny fist wrapped around my finger every morning like a promise.
I had moved into my sister’s guest house in Austin.
The Vance estate was frozen.
Vance Holdings was under federal control.
Arthur pleaded guilty first.
Not because he was brave.
Because Margaret refused to save him.
He testified that Margaret ordered the guardianship schemes.
He admitted the hidden transfers.
He admitted the private clinic payments.
He admitted Julian knew about the plan to take my daughter.
Julian sat at the defense table and stared straight ahead.
Margaret sat beside him, pearls gone, face bare, still colder than anyone in the room.
Chloe testified next.
Heavily pregnant, guarded by U.S. Marshals, she looked at me only once.
“I helped them humiliate Olivia,” she said. “I helped them plan to replace her. I knew they wanted her baby.”
The prosecutor asked, “Why did you cooperate?”
Chloe touched her stomach.
“Because I realized my baby was next if I stopped obeying.”
Julian’s attorney tried to paint her as jealous.
She did not fight back.
“I was jealous,” she said. “I was also guilty.”
Then Victor testified.
He played the security footage.
The room watched Julian push me into the gift table.
They watched Margaret clap.
They watched Arthur toast Chloe.
Then the agents arrived.
The jury did not look away.
The former Vance wives testified.
One had lost custody for three years after Margaret fabricated psychiatric records.
Another had signed away stock while sedated after childbirth.
Emily’s sister testified last.
Her voice shook as she described begging to see Emily before she died.
“The clinic told me family only,” she said. “But I was her family.”
Margaret showed no reaction.
When it was my turn, I carried no notes.
I told them about wanting one peaceful memory.
About the way Chloe smiled.
About Julian’s hand hitting my shoulder.
About my daughter going still inside me for three seconds.
The prosecutor asked, “Why did you collect company records?”
I looked at Margaret.
“Because women in that family kept disappearing from their own lives.”
Julian finally looked at me.
I did not look away.
The convictions came after four days.
Margaret was found guilty of conspiracy, fraud, witness intimidation, medical coercion, and attempted custodial interference.
Julian was convicted of assault, conspiracy, fraud, and attempted custodial interference.
Arthur received prison time and restitution.
Dr. Porter lost her license and went to prison.
The private clinic was shut down.
Chloe received a reduced sentence and protected custody after giving birth to a healthy boy.
Her son did not inherit an empire.
He inherited a chance to grow up away from one.
After sentencing, Julian asked to speak to me.
I said no.

Then I went home and rocked Grace under the porch light until she fell asleep.
That was answer enough.
