Surprise

Chapter 2

The knocking came again.

Harder.

Arthur’s champagne glass stopped halfway to his mouth.

Margaret’s smile vanished.

Julian turned toward the foyer.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice called from outside.

“Federal agents. Open the door.”

Chloe’s hand slipped from Julian’s.

“What is happening?”

I stayed on the floor with one arm locked around my stomach.

Hannah knelt beside me.

“Olivia, are you hurt?”

“I’m okay,” I whispered.

But I was not okay.

My side burned.

My daughter had gone still for three terrifying seconds.

Then she kicked once.

I nearly sobbed from relief.

Arthur stepped toward the front door, trying to look calm.

“This is private property.”

The door opened before he reached it.

Not broken.

Opened.

By Victor Reed, Arthur’s own head of security.

He stood aside as federal agents entered the mansion in dark jackets.

FBI.

IRS Criminal Investigation.

U.S. Marshals.

The guests gasped.

Margaret whispered, “Arthur?”

Agent Grace Monroe walked in first.

She looked at me on the floor.

Then at Julian.

Then at the destroyed gift table.

“Mrs. Vance?”

I raised my hand slightly.

“That’s me.”

Her face tightened.

“Do you need medical assistance?”

“Yes,” Hannah said before I could answer. “He pushed her. She’s eight months pregnant.”

Julian shouted, “That’s a lie.”

Every phone in the room lifted.

Guests started recording.

Agent Monroe turned to him.

“Sir, step back.”

Arthur forced a laugh.

“There has been a misunderstanding.”

“No,” Agent Monroe said. “There has been a six-month investigation.”

Margaret looked at me then.

Really looked.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You.”

I slowly sat up with Hannah’s help.

“Yes.”

Julian’s mouth opened.

I saw the moment he understood.

All the evenings I sat quietly in Arthur’s home office while they discussed money around me like I was furniture.

All the passwords Margaret asked me to organize.

All the company invoices Julian told me to scan.

They thought I was obedient.

I was collecting evidence.

Agent Monroe held up a warrant.

“We are executing search warrants for Vance Holdings, this residence, and all electronic devices on site.”

Chloe backed away.

“I’m not part of this.”

Margaret snapped, “Be quiet.”

Too late.

Agent Monroe looked at Chloe.

“We’ll need your phone too.”

Chloe clutched it to her chest.

“No.”

A marshal stepped forward.

Julian tried to move toward me.

Hannah blocked him.

“Touch her again and I swear—”

“Hannah,” I whispered.

She stopped, shaking.

Arthur turned to Victor.

“You let them in?”

Victor’s face was stone.

“I let justice in.”

Arthur went pale.

That line meant something.

Something I did not know yet.

Agent Monroe gave orders.

Phones collected.

Laptops seized.

Guests separated.

Family members escorted into different rooms.

Then paramedics entered.

As they helped me onto a stretcher, Julian finally looked scared.

Not for me.

For himself.

He leaned close as I passed.

“You have no idea what you just did.”

I looked him in the eye.

“I know exactly what I did.”

Then Chloe screamed from the dining room.

An agent had opened her purse.

May you like

Inside was a sealed envelope with my name on it.

And a hospital bracelet for a baby who had not been born yet.
