Surprise

Chapter 7

Everyone had feared Arthur Vance.

His name was on buildings.

His face was in magazines.

His signature sat on every company statement.

But Margaret had been the one moving money.

The one arranging marriages.

The one deciding which grandchildren mattered.

Arthur built the empire.

Margaret weaponized it.

Chloe talked for four hours.

She gave names.

Accounts.

Passwords.

A ranch outside Fort Worth where Margaret kept original documents.

A private clinic where Dr. Porter sent “difficult women.”

A family attorney who drafted guardianship papers before babies were born.

Rebecca listened without blinking.

Agent Monroe recorded everything.

I sat there with my hands on my belly, feeling my daughter roll under my ribs.

“She’s why I’m talking,” Chloe said finally.

I looked at her.

“My daughter?”

Chloe nodded.

“I thought having a boy made me safe. Then Margaret told me if I disobeyed, she could make me disappear too.”

For a second, I saw her clearly.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

But trapped in a machine she had chosen to enter before realizing it also had teeth.

“Then keep talking,” I said.

She did.

By morning, federal agents raided the ranch.

They found ledgers behind a false wall in Margaret’s wine cellar.

Birth certificates.

Prenuptial agreements.

Guardianship petitions.

Settlement payments to women who had married into the Vance family and vanished from public view after “nervous collapses.”

One name stopped my heart.

Emily Vance.

Julian’s first cousin’s wife.

She died in a private clinic five years earlier after giving birth to a daughter.

Margaret told everyone it was postpartum psychosis.

The baby was raised by the Vances.

Emily’s sister had tried to sue and disappeared from the case.

Agent Monroe showed me Emily’s file.

My hands went numb.

“She did this before.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody stopped her.”

“Not until now.”

That afternoon, Margaret was arrested.

She wore pearls.

Of course she did.

Cameras caught her walking out of the estate with her chin lifted.

When reporters shouted questions, she smiled.

“My family is being attacked by an unstable woman.”

I watched from the hospital bed.

Hannah grabbed the remote and turned it off.

But the damage spread fast.

Online headlines called me vengeful.

Greedy.

A jealous wife trying to destroy a dynasty.

Then Victor released the baby shower footage through his attorney.

The whole world saw Julian push me.

They saw his family clap.

They saw the agents arrive seconds later.

Public sympathy shifted so fast Margaret’s lawyers panicked.

Two former Vance wives came forward.

Then Emily’s sister.

Then a nurse from the private clinic.

The empire cracked open.

But my body had carried too much fear.

That night, contractions started.

Dr. Ellis looked at the monitor.

“Olivia, your daughter is coming early.”

I grabbed Hannah’s hand.

“No Vances.”

May you like

Rebecca leaned over me.

“No Vances.”
