Surprise

Chapter 4

I showed the message to Agent Monroe.

Within minutes, hospital security moved me to a private floor under a different name.

Hannah stayed on the couch with one eye open all night.

I did not sleep.

Every time my daughter shifted, I touched my belly and whispered, “I’ve got you.”

By morning, Julian had been released pending questioning.

Arthur was not.

Margaret was not.

Three Vance executives were arrested before breakfast.

Victor Reed gave a statement that afternoon.

He came to the hospital with two federal agents and stood at the door like a man carrying a mountain on his back.

“I should have told you sooner,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You helped them for years.”

“I protected the family business. I thought that was loyalty.”

“And now?”

“Now I know the business was a crime scene.”

He placed a small drive on the table.

Agent Monroe took it.

“What is this?”

Victor looked at me.

“Security footage from inside the estate. Arthur ordered me to erase it weekly. I didn’t.”

Hannah sat up.

“What footage?”

Victor swallowed.

“Julian pushing you. Margaret telling Chloe to stand near the front cameras. Arthur saying the baby shower would make Olivia look unstable if she reacted.”

My skin went cold.

“They planned that part too?”

Victor nodded.

“They expected you to scream. Throw something. Attack Chloe.”

“I didn’t.”

“No,” he said. “You smiled.”

For the first time, a faint warmth moved through my chest.

Then Victor added, “There is more.”

He looked at Agent Monroe.

“Arthur ordered a private nurse for Olivia’s delivery.”

I froze.

“I never approved that.”

“She wasn’t for your care,” Victor said. “She was for the baby.”

Hannah cursed.

Victor’s voice lowered.

“The nurse’s instructions were to report signs of maternal instability immediately after delivery. Crying. Refusing visitors. Asking for the baby too often.”

I almost laughed.

“Asking for my own newborn.”

“They were building a file,” Agent Monroe said.

I looked toward the window.

Dallas shimmered under the heat.

I used to think wealth made people careless.

Now I understood.

It made them patient.

They did not need to steal with masks.

They used paperwork.

Doctors.

Smiles.

Baby showers.

At noon, my attorney, Rebecca Shaw, arrived.

She had handled my grandmother’s estate years ago.

She hugged me carefully.

Then she became terrifying.

“We’ve filed for emergency protection,” she said. “Julian cannot enter your home, contact you, or approach the hospital.”

“He’ll ignore it.”

“Then he’ll be arrested.”

Agent Monroe’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

She looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“Chloe Bennett just checked into this hospital under an alias.”

My blood went cold.

“She’s here?”

Agent Monroe nodded.

“And she listed Julian as her emergency contact.”

Hannah stood.

“No.”

Then the nurse rushed in.

“Mrs. Vance, we need to move you now.”

May you like

From the hallway came Julian’s voice.

“Olivia, open the door.”
