Surprise

Chapter 5: The Man Who Signed My Daughter Away

My father.

The words sat between us like something poisonous.

I stared at Ryan.

Then at Diane.

Then back at Ryan.

“My father?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I waited for someone to laugh.

For someone to say it was impossible.

For someone to tell me this had gone too far.

But nobody did.

Because they knew.

They all knew.

I felt my hands go cold.

“My father signed Lily’s papers?””

Ryan looked away.

“I don’t know exactly what he signed.””

“You just said you knew who signed them.””

“I know whose name was on the form.””

“Then explain.””

He swallowed.

“I found the paperwork months ago.””

“Where?””

“In Megan’s files.””

I stepped closer.

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t know if it was real.””

“You didn’t know?””

I pointed toward the folder.

“You had proof my father was involved with a program that took our child, and you said nothing?””

“I was trying to confirm it.””

“For how long?””

Silence.

“For how long, Ryan?””

“Almost a year.””

The answer landed harder than I expected.

A year.

For an entire year, he had been carrying a secret about my daughter.

For an entire year, he had watched me wake up beside him every morning.

For an entire year, he let me believe my life was normal.

I looked around the room.

At the hidden files.

The photographs.

The evidence of every lie.

“You all built a second life around me.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“You did.””

I held up the folder.

“My sister disappeared. My first daughter was taken. My second daughter was secretly monitored. My husband lied to me.””

I looked at Diane.

“And my mother-in-law drugged my child.””

Diane flinched.

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

“You don't get to decide that.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From what?””

She looked at the floor.

And that scared me.

Because for the first time, Diane looked less like the person hiding something.

And more like someone terrified of what would happen if the truth came out.

“From your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Diane nodded.

I laughed quietly.

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father is a retired accountant who spends his weekends fixing old cars.””

“That’s what you know.””

I stared at Ryan.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ryan.””

He took a breath.

“Your father worked with Dr. Hale.””

The garage seemed to tilt around me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Doing what?””

“I don't know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I don’t.””

I walked toward him.

“You knew enough to hide it.””

He looked down.

“I found out after Megan disappeared.””

“Megan didn’t disappear.””

“No.””

“Then where is she?””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“I told you. I don’t know.””

I looked at Diane.

“You said she came here.””

Diane nodded.

“She did.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

“What did she say?””

Diane hesitated.

“She said she found Ava.””

My breath caught.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“Where?””

“She didn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she said someone was listening.””

I looked around the room.

The hidden cameras.

The files.

The locked cabinet.

Someone had been watching us.

For how long?

I felt a sudden wave of anger.

“My father knows.””

Ryan looked at me.

“What?””

“He knows about Ava.””

“Emily—”

“He knows.””

I could feel it.

A memory I had ignored for years.

My father’s strange reaction after my miscarriage.

The way he avoided hospitals.

The way he never asked questions.

The way he told me:

“Sometimes the best thing you can do is move forward.””

At the time, I thought he was comforting me.

Now it sounded different.

Like instructions.

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling him.””

Ryan moved immediately.

“No.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

“Because if he’s involved—”

“If?””

Ryan went quiet.

I stared at him.

“You still protect everyone except me.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

I dialed my father’s number.

The call rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then voicemail.

I hung up.

Called again.

This time he answered.

“Emily?””

My father’s voice.

Warm.

Familiar.

Normal.

The sound almost broke me.

“Dad.””

A pause.

“What happened?””

I looked at Ryan.

At Diane.

At the papers.

“Where is my daughter?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“What?””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Ava.””

Another pause.

My father’s breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But I heard it.

He knew the name.

“Emily…”

“Where is she?””

“Who told you that name?””

My heart stopped.

I closed my eyes.

“You know.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

“Emily, you need to calm down.””

I laughed.

The same phrase.

Everyone kept saying it.

Calm down.

Like my emotions were the problem.

Like the truth wasn’t.

“My daughter was taken from me.””

“Emily—”

“My sister found her.””

Silence.

Then my father said:

“Where is Ryan?””

I froze.

“What?””

“Is Ryan there?””

“Why?””

“Answer me.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

“Emily.””

“You knew Ryan was involved.””

“I knew he was trying to help.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Ryan.

He looked terrified.

“Trying to help?””

My father sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“I don’t.””

“You weren’t supposed to find out this way.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Find out what?””

No answer.

“Dad?””

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Your first daughter wasn’t the only child they took.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“They took others.””

“Who?””

“I can’t talk about this on the phone.””

“Where are you?””

“Emily, listen to me carefully.””

“No.””

“You need to leave the house.””

I looked around.

The garage.

The hidden room.

The evidence.

“Why?””

“Because if they know you found the files, they’ll come.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

A whisper.

Then:

“Dr. Hale.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Ryan looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I didn’t answer.

“Emily?””

I looked at him.

“He knows.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“What?””

“My father knows.””

Diane sat down.

“Oh God.””

I turned.

“You knew too.””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“Enough.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Megan begged me.””

“Megan?””

“She said if you knew too early, you would go after them.””

“And?””

“And they would come after you.””

I looked at Ryan.

“And you believed that?””

“Yes.””

“You believed keeping me ignorant would protect me.””

He nodded.

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“I wasn't protected.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I wiped my face.

“You don’t.””

I grabbed the folder.

“I spent eighteen months grieving a daughter who was alive.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I spent two years thinking Lily was my only child.””

“I know.””

“I watched you lie to me.””

“I know.””

“Stop saying that.””

He looked at me.

I stepped closer.

“You don’t know.””

The garage door suddenly creaked.

All of us froze.

The sound came from outside.

Someone was opening it.

Ryan immediately moved in front of me.

Diane stood.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The garage door lifted halfway.

A shadow appeared.

Then a voice.

“Emily?””

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

“Dad?””

My father stepped into the garage.

He looked older than he had that morning.

Tired.

Afraid.

His eyes moved across the room.

The files.

The photographs.

The bottles.

Then he looked at me.

“I was hoping you would never see this.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

I expected denial.

A lie.

An excuse.

Instead, he admitted it.

“How long?””

“Since Ava was born.””

My knees weakened.

“Why?””

He looked at the photograph on the table.

The one of my baby.

“Because I was there.””

The room went silent.

“You were there?””

He nodded.

“I was the one who found out what they planned to do.””

“What they planned?””

He looked at Ryan.

Then at Diane.

“You don't know the worst part.””

I stared.

“What worse part?””

My father stepped closer.

“Your daughter wasn’t taken because of her condition.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

He looked at me.

“Because of who she was.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

He reached into his coat pocket.

My body tensed.

But he pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew someday you would need it.””

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Ava.

Not of Lily.

A photograph of a hospital room.

A woman sat on the bed holding a newborn baby.

My eyes locked on the woman.

I knew her.

Even though I hadn't seen her face in years.

“Megan.””

My father nodded.

My fingers trembled.

“That’s impossible.””

“She was alive after the funeral.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She was there.””

“When?””

“After everyone left.””

I stared.

“Why?””

My father’s face turned pale.

“Because Megan wasn’t the person they thought she was.””

The words made no sense.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“It means your sister helped create Nightwell.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

“She helped them.””

“No.””

“Then she tried to destroy them.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Megan.

Holding a baby.

A baby that wasn't Ava.

A baby I didn't recognize.

“Who is that?””

My father didn’t answer.

He looked at the picture.

Then whispered:

“That is the child who disappeared before yours.””

I stared.

“Another child?””

He nodded.

“Another daughter.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked directly at me.

“Emily…”

His voice broke.

“Your family has been connected to Nightwell for generations.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Because your mother was part of it too.””

The garage door suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The lights flickered.

And from somewhere outside the room, a phone began ringing.

Not mine.

Not Ryan’s.

Not Diane’s.

A phone hidden inside the wall.

My father looked terrified.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

May you like

He whispered:

“They found us.””
