Chapter 9: The Daughter They Tried to Erase
The message stayed on my screen.
*Lily is already at Northbridge.*
I read it once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
My brain refused to accept the words.
Lily.
My little girl.
The child who had called my name when she was scared.
The child who reached for me when she woke up.
The child I had promised I would always protect.
She was there.
With them.
I looked at Dr. Hale.
Then Ryan.
Then Ava, who was unconscious in my arms.
“Where is Lily?””
Nobody answered.
My voice rose.
“Where is my daughter?””
Dr. Hale remained calm.
Too calm.
“She is being cared for.””
I felt rage burn through every part of me.
“Don’t say that.””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“People who care for children don’t drug them.””
His expression hardened.
“You misunderstand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
I looked at Ryan.
“You knew.””
He looked devastated.
“I didn’t know they had moved her.””
“But you knew Northbridge existed.””
“Yes.””
“You knew they were still operating.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Lily was connected to this.””
“Yes.””
Every answer felt like another piece of my life being taken away.
I held Ava tighter.
“How did they get Lily?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Ryan.
“How?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I left her with my mother.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“I thought she was safe.””
I stared.
“You left our daughter with Diane.””
“I was trying to follow a lead.””
“You left her.””
“I thought I could bring Ava back.””
“And you gave them Lily.””
“No.””
“You did.””
My voice broke.
“You keep telling yourself you were trying to fix everything, but every decision you made put my children closer to them.””
Ryan covered his face.
“I know.””
I turned away.
I couldn't look at him.
Not then.
Not after everything.
Ava stirred in my arms.
Her eyes opened slowly.
“Mommy?””
I immediately softened.
“I’m here.””
She looked around.
“Where is Lily?””
The question destroyed me.
I swallowed.
“She’s somewhere safe.””
Ava shook her head weakly.
“No.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She’s scared.””
I looked at her.
“How do you know?””
Ava touched her chest.
“Because I feel it.””
I looked at Dr. Hale.
“What did you do?””
He answered:
“The connection is stronger than we expected.””
I moved toward him.
“You experimented on my daughters.””
“We observed a phenomenon.””
“They are children.””
“They are extraordinary children.””
“They are my children.””
For the first time, Dr. Hale looked frustrated.
“You still don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
He stared at me.
“The Carter family has carried a rare neurological trait for generations.””
“And?””
“Most carriers never show symptoms.””
“What symptoms?””
“Enhanced emotional recognition. Memory association. Pattern sensitivity.””
I shook my head.
“You’re describing children being children.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“I’m describing children who recognize people and places they have never experienced.””
I looked at Ava.
She looked away.
Because she knew.
“What did Megan discover?””
Dr. Hale’s expression changed.
“Megan discovered the truth.””
“Which was?””
“That the program was never about sleep.””
The room became quiet.
I waited.
Dr. Hale continued.
“It started as sleep research.””
“And became what?””
“A study of inherited neurological response.””
“Using children.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was horrifying.
I looked at him.
“And my daughters?””
He looked at Ava.
“They were the first successful case.””
“Successful?””
He nodded.
“A connection between siblings born years apart.””
My stomach twisted.
“You call that success?””
“Yes.””
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I whispered:
“You’re a monster.””
He didn't react.
“History is full of people called monsters by those who don't understand their work.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“History is full of people who used excuses to hurt others.””
For a second, he had no answer.
Then the sound of sirens came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Dr. Hale looked toward the window.
His confidence disappeared.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Ryan noticed too.
“Who called them?””
I looked at my phone.
Megan.
Another message.
*I contacted the police.*
A second message.
*Don’t trust anyone who arrives first.*
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan looked at me.
“What?””
I showed him.
His face changed.
Before he could answer, headlights flashed across the front windows.
Several vehicles.
Too many.
Dr. Hale smiled.
“They won’t help you.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because people with power don't lose everything easily.””
The front door opened.
Voices.
Footsteps.
Ryan moved closer.
“We need another exit.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he’s right.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You think the police are with him?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s your answer to everything.””
He looked at me.
“Because nobody tells me the truth either.””
That stopped me.
For one second, I saw the fear behind his guilt.
Not an excuse.
Fear.
A loud knock hit the front door.
“Police!””
I froze.
Dr. Hale looked amused.
“Interesting timing.””
A voice called again.
“Emily Carter? We need everyone to step away from Dr. Hale.””
I looked at him.
“Do they know who you are?””
He smiled.
“They know exactly who I am.””
Ryan whispered:
“Don’t open the door.””
I looked at him.
“Then who do we trust?””
Nobody answered.
The door burst open.
Several officers entered.
At first, relief washed over me.
Finally.
Someone normal.
Someone outside this nightmare.
Then I saw the person walking behind them.
My relief disappeared.
My father.
He wasn't bleeding anymore.
He was walking.
And beside him was a woman.
A woman I recognized.
Even though I hadn't seen her in nearly two years.
My breath stopped.
“Megan?””
The room went silent.
The woman looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emily.””
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My sister.
Alive.
Standing in my house.
The sister everyone told me was dead.
The sister who left clues.
The sister who saved Ava.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to hit her.
I wanted answers.
Instead, I whispered:
“You let me bury you.””
Megan’s face broke.
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were gone.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
She cried.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I looked around.
“At what cost?””
Her eyes moved to Ava.
Then to the hallway.
“Where is Lily?””
My heart clenched.
“She’s at Northbridge.””
Megan’s face changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Emily, no.””
“You said you found Ava.””
“I did.””
“Then why is Lily there?””
Megan looked at Ryan.
Then Dr. Hale.
And finally me.
“Because Lily was never the target.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was the key.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Megan walked closer.
“When Ava was born, they thought she was the answer.””
She looked at Ava.
“But they were wrong.””
Ava looked at her.
“Megan.””
My heart broke hearing my daughter say her name.
Megan knelt.
“I’m sorry.””
Ava hugged her.
And that was when I saw it.
The pain on Megan’s face.
She had lost time with this child too.
Everyone had lost something.
Megan stood.
“Lily changed everything.””
“How?””
Megan looked at me.
“Because Lily inherited something Ava didn’t.””
“What?””
She glanced at Dr. Hale.
“Control.””
The room went silent.
Dr. Hale’s expression hardened.
“Enough.””
Megan ignored him.
“They realized Ava could recognize emotional patterns.””
She looked at me.
“But Lily could influence them.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Megan nodded.
“Yes.””
“She’s two.””
“I know.””
“What are you saying?””
Megan stepped closer.
“I’m saying Lily wasn’t just connected to Ava.””
My heart stopped.
“She was connected to everyone.””
I looked at Dr. Hale.
He looked angry now.
Not calm.
Angry.
“What did you do to my daughter?””
Megan whispered:
“They amplified it.””
“What?””
“The connection.””
She looked at Ava.
“They used Ava as the bridge.””
I felt sick.
“And Lily?””
“They wanted to see if they could transfer the response.””
“Transfer?””
Megan nodded.
“From one person to many.””
I stared.
“No.””
“They were creating a way to influence memory, fear, and behavior.””
The room felt colder.
“They were using my daughter.””
“Yes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Where is she?””
Megan looked at the officers.
Then at my father.
“Northbridge.””
“We’re going.””
Megan grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“You can’t just walk in.””
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then move.””
Megan’s eyes filled with fear.
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
“You need to know the truth before you go.””
“I already know enough.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
I stared.
“What else?””
Megan took a breath.
Then said:
“Lily wasn’t taken because of her connection to Ava.””
“Then why?””
Megan looked at Dr. Hale.
“Because they discovered something about Emily.””
My blood ran cold.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Megan whispered:
“You aren’t just a carrier.””
Silence.
“You’re the source.””
I felt the room spin.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
I looked at my father.
At Ryan.
At Dr. Hale.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
Megan continued:
“Your memories.””
I stared.
“My memories?””
“They’re different.””
I laughed.
“This is insane.””
Megan shook her head.
“When you were a child, they studied you.””
I felt numb.
“My mother.””
“Yes.””
“My father.””
“Yes.””
“They experimented on me?””
Megan looked down.
“Yes.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“And nobody told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After Ava was born.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because your memories were blocked.””
I froze.
“What?””
Megan whispered:
“They didn’t just hide the truth from you.””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“They removed it.””
The room went silent.
I couldn't hear anything.
Not the officers.
Not Dr. Hale.
Not Ryan.
Only my own heartbeat.
“What did you say?””
Megan stepped closer.
“You have memories you don't remember having.””
My hands started shaking.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
She looked at Ava.
“It’s why Ava recognized you.””
I looked down.
Ava stared back at me.
“What does she know?””
Megan’s voice became quiet.
“She remembers the night Ava was born.””
I froze.
“She wasn’t there.””
“She was.””
“No.””
“She was.””
I felt a sudden pressure in my head.
A flash.
A hospital room.
A baby crying.
A woman screaming.
My mother.
A man saying:
“She’s awake.””
I grabbed my head.
Ryan caught me.
“Emily?””
Another flash.
A baby.
Not Ava.
Another room.
Another child.
A voice.
My voice.
Saying:
“Please don’t take her.””
I fell to my knees.
Megan knelt beside me.
“Emily.””
I looked up.
Terrified.
Because I remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
The room.
The people.
The baby.
The truth.
I whispered:
“I saw them take her.””
Megan nodded.
“Yes.””
“My first daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And I forgot.””
“Yes.””
Ava grabbed my hand.
“Mommy.””
I looked at her.
She was crying.
“I remembered too.””
My heart broke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Northbridge.
Not from Megan.
Not from anyone I knew.
A live video appeared.
I opened it.
The screen showed a room.
A small hospital-like room.
A child sitting on a bed.
A girl.
Older than Lily.
Younger than Ava should have been.
She looked into the camera.
And whispered:
“Mom?””
I stopped breathing.
Because she looked exactly like me.
Then the video cut.
May you like
One final message appeared.
*Come alone if you want to see your third daughter.*
