Surprise

Chapter 4: The Child Before Lily

The room went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that felt like the entire world had stopped moving because something impossible had just been said.

I stared at Diane.

“The child before Lily?””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Diane looked down.

Ryan looked away.

And that was when I knew.

Not because they confessed.

Because neither of them looked surprised.

They looked caught.

I took one step toward Ryan.

“What child?””

He swallowed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My hands started shaking.

“Do not say my name like that. Do not try to calm me down.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

I pointed toward the garage.

“At some point, you decided I couldn’t handle the truth. You and your mother made that decision for me.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I turned to Diane.

“You said there was another child.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Whose child?””

Her face tightened.

“Yours.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“No.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“That’s not possible.””

Diane whispered, “It is.””

I shook my head.

“No. I would know.””

The words came out desperate.

A mother knew her own life.

She knew her own pain.

She knew every moment that changed her forever.

“I would know if I had another child.””

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

“You were pregnant.””

The air left my lungs.

I stared at her.

“When?””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Before Lily.””

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The confession was so quiet it almost disappeared.

But I heard it.

I heard every single word.

I turned away.

My mind raced backward.

Before Lily.

Before the nursery.

Before the baby clothes.

Before the first laugh that changed my entire world.

There was only one pregnancy.

One I had almost forgotten because everyone told me to forget.

A pregnancy that ended early.

A pregnancy doctors called a loss.

A pregnancy Ryan held me through.

I whispered:

“I miscarried.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Diane.

“That's what happened.””

Diane shook her head slowly.

“No.””

My heart started pounding.

“No?””

“You were told that.””

I stared.

“By who?””

Her eyes moved toward Ryan.

The room tilted.

I looked at my husband.

“Ryan?””

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He said nothing.

“Ryan.””

His silence was an answer.

I felt something break inside me.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet crack.

Like glass finally giving up.

“You let me believe my baby died.””

His eyes filled.

“I thought it was better.””

“Better?””

My voice rose.

“You thought losing my child and grieving alone was better?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He looked at the floor.

“From the truth.””

I laughed.

It sounded broken.

“The truth?””

I walked closer.

“You stole my grief from me.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You let me stand at a graveside for a child who wasn’t there.””

His face changed.

“Who told you there was a grave?””

I froze.

“What?””

He realized his mistake immediately.

But it was too late.

I stepped closer.

“You said there wasn’t a grave.””

Ryan looked away.

“Ryan.””

He didn't answer.

“You knew.””

“Emily.””

“You knew there was no grave.””

His breathing became uneven.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Then what did you know?””

Nothing.

I waited.

The silence stretched.

Then Diane spoke.

“Your baby was born alive.””

Everything stopped.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She began crying.

“Your daughter.””

My body went cold.

“Daughter?””

Ryan closed his eyes.

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

Diane nodded.

“She was born alive.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She lived.””

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

“She lived for six minutes.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Six minutes.

Six minutes of life.

Six minutes my baby had existed in this world.

Six minutes I never knew about.

Six minutes someone stole from me.

I looked at Ryan.

“Why?””

His face collapsed.

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

“She was sick.””

“What does that mean?””

“The doctors said she had complications.””

“What complications?””

He struggled to answer.

“The same genetic marker.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“The reason the Nightwell program was interested in Lily.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re saying my first baby was part of this?””

Ryan nodded.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“When did you find out?””

He didn’t answer.

“When?””

“After she was born.””

“Who told you?””

He looked at Diane.

My stomach turned.

“You both knew.””

Diane whispered, “We were told she had a condition.””

“What condition?””

“They didn't explain.””

“Who?””

“Dr. Hale.””

The name from earlier.

The name connected everything.

I stepped back.

“You met him.””

Ryan nodded.

“I met him at the hospital.””

“And you trusted him?””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

His eyes filled.

“To save her.””

I stared.

“You let a stranger take my child.””

“No.””

“You did.””

“I didn’t know what he was doing.””

“Then where is she?””

Silence.

The question hung there.

Where is my child?

The baby I mourned.

The baby I thought I lost.

The baby who had a name only I knew.

Ryan whispered:

“I don't know.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I looked at Diane.

“You said she lived six minutes.””

Diane nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Diane’s face twisted with pain.

“She was taken.””

The word made my blood freeze.

“Taken by who?””

“The doctors.””

“Which doctors?””

She looked away.

“Dr. Hale.””

I grabbed the table for support.

“So my baby died because of them?””

“No.””

Diane’s voice cracked.

“She didn’t die.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She disappeared.””

I stared.

“No.””

“She was alive when they took her.””

My heart felt like it stopped.

I turned to Ryan.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He couldn’t.

He couldn’t even look at me.

That was worse.

I backed away.

“How long?””

“Emily…”

“How long did you know?””

He whispered:

“Since Lily was born.””

The room spun.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“For two years.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I had another child.””

His tears fell.

“Yes.””

“And you watched me raise Lily.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me celebrate birthdays.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me sing to her.””

“Yes.””

“And every day you knew there was another daughter somewhere.””

He covered his face.

“I was trying to find her.””

I stared.

“You were trying?””

“Yes.””

“By joining the people who took her?””

“No.””

“You signed Lily into their program.””

“I thought it would lead me to her.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His voice broke.

“Megan found evidence that your first daughter was connected to Nightwell.””

I shook my head.

“You used Lily as bait.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I thought I could get answers.””

“You risked another child.””

“I know.””

“You risked our daughter.””

“I know.””

“You knew what happened once.””

His face collapsed.

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw him differently.

Not as my husband.

Not as Lily’s father.

As someone who had been making decisions behind my back.

Dangerous decisions.

Life-changing decisions.

I looked at the papers scattered across the table.

Observation logs.

Photos.

Forms.

All the pieces of a nightmare.

Then I noticed something.

A folder hidden beneath the papers.

It had my name on it.

*EMILY CARTER.*

My hands went numb.

“What is this?””

Ryan looked up.

“Don't.””

I pulled it toward me.

“Why does this have my name?””

Diane whispered:

“Because they studied you too.””

I opened the folder.

The first page was a medical record.

My name.

My date of birth.

My childhood history.

I flipped the page.

Another document.

*Family Genetic Profile.*

I stopped.

“What is this?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What did they find?””

He didn’t answer.

I turned another page.

There were notes.

Handwritten.

*Maternal inheritance pattern confirmed.*

*Two viable subjects identified.*

*Subject A: deceased?*

*Subject B: active.*

My eyes locked onto the words.

Subject A.

Subject B.

Two children.

I looked at Ryan.

“Who wrote this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Stop saying that.””

“I swear.””

I turned another page.

There was a photograph.

A baby.

Tiny.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

I couldn't breathe.

Because I recognized the blanket.

I had chosen it.

A yellow blanket with little white stars.

The same blanket I bought before I knew if I was having a boy or girl.

My fingers touched the photograph.

“That’s her.””

Nobody spoke.

“That’s my baby.””

Ryan started crying.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“What was her name?””

His face changed.

“We never named her.””

My heart broke.

I whispered:

“I did.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“I named her.””

I remembered.

The hospital room.

The empty feeling.

The doctor telling me there was nothing they could do.

The nurse asking if I wanted to hold her.

I said no.

Because I was afraid.

Because I thought holding her would destroy me.

I spent eighteen months believing I lost a child I never got to meet.

But now I knew.

I had a daughter.

A daughter who had lived.

A daughter someone took.

“Her name was Ava.””

Ryan covered his mouth.

“Ava?””

“Yes.””

The room became still.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

I opened it.

This time, there was no photo.

Only words.

*Now you know why Megan came back.*

Another message appeared immediately.

*She found Ava.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Ryan.

“Who is Megan?””

Nobody answered.

The phone buzzed again.

A final message.

*She’s alive.*

My hands started shaking.

I whispered:

“My sister found my daughter.””

Diane covered her face.

Ryan looked terrified.

And then another message appeared.

*But she isn’t with Megan anymore.*

I stared.

A final line appeared.

*Ava is with the man who signed Lily’s papers.*

I slowly lifted my eyes.

“Who signed Lily’s papers?””

Ryan went completely still.

I already knew the answer before he spoke.

Because the fear on his face told me.

“It wasn’t me.””

I looked at him.

“Then who was it?””

May you like

He whispered:

“Your father.””
