Surprise

Chapter 2: The Locked Cabinet

The ambulance ride felt like it lasted forever.

I sat beside Lily, holding her tiny hand while the monitor beside her made sounds I couldn’t stop listening to.

Every beep felt like a question.

Every second felt like a punishment.

I kept replaying the moment I opened the door.

The scream.

The bottle.

Diane’s hand.

My daughter’s terrified eyes.

“Mommy.””

That one word kept repeating in my head.

A child should never have to sound that scared when calling for her mother.

At the hospital, nurses moved quickly.

They asked questions.

They checked Lily’s breathing.

They took samples.

And I answered everything I could.

Then a doctor stepped into the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I stood immediately.

“Yes?””

“I need to ask you something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Is Lily currently taking any medication?””

“No.””

“Has she ever been prescribed anything for sleep, anxiety, allergies, or behavior?””

“No.””

The doctor glanced at the chart.

“Then we need to understand where this substance came from.””

I looked through the glass window at my daughter.

She was lying on the hospital bed with a small oxygen tube near her nose.

“She’s only two.””

The doctor’s expression softened.

“I know.””

I swallowed.

“My mother-in-law was watching her.””

“Did she have permission to give Lily medication?””

“No.””

The doctor nodded slowly.

“Then we’ll need that information documented.””

I walked back into the hallway.

Ryan was sitting in a chair.

His elbows rested on his knees.

For the first time, he looked shaken.

But I was too angry to comfort him.

“You knew.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“You knew there was something in that cabinet.””

His face changed.

“Emily—”

“Answer me.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I felt my chest tighten.

“How long?””

“Emily, it’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Ryan stood.

“My mom has helped with Lily.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He stayed silent.

I stepped closer.

“How long has your mother been giving our daughter something?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t know she was doing it today.””

“Today?””

The word hit me.

“Ryan, that means you knew before.””

He rubbed his face.

“She said it was harmless.””

I stared at him.

“Who said?””

“My mom.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“She told you she was giving our daughter something.””

“She said it was just to help when Lily wouldn’t sleep.””

“And you allowed it?””

“I thought it was safe.””

“You thought?””

My voice rose.

A nurse glanced over.

I lowered my voice.

“You trusted your mother over your own child.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

I pointed toward the room.

“Look at her.””

Ryan looked through the window.

His expression cracked.

For a moment, I saw the father I knew.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Diane.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Mom?””

I watched his face change.

He walked several steps away.

That made my anger turn into suspicion.

When he came back, I asked:

“What did she say?””

“Nothing.””

“Ryan.””

“She’s upset.””

“Upset?””

I almost laughed.

“Our daughter is in the hospital.””

“She said she didn’t mean for this to happen.””

I stared at him.

“What exactly did she mean?””

He didn’t answer.

A few hours later, after doctors confirmed Lily was stable, I went home with Ryan.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

The house looked exactly the same.

The same couch.

The same toys.

The same family photos on the wall.

But it no longer felt like home.

It felt like a place where someone had been hiding something.

I walked straight to the kitchen.

The locked cabinet was still there.

Ryan followed behind me.

“Emily.””

“Open it.””

He stopped.

“Now.””

His face became pale.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

I grabbed the keys from the counter.

Ryan reached for my hand.

“Don’t.””

I pulled away.

“Why?””

He had no answer.

My hands shook as I unlocked the cabinet.

The door opened slowly.

Inside were bottles.

Several bottles.

Different labels.

Different sizes.

My heart sank.

I reached for the closest one.

Then I saw the label.

And I stopped breathing.

Because it wasn’t Lily’s name.

It wasn’t Ryan’s name.

It wasn’t Diane’s name.

It belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had been inside our house many times.

Someone who had held my daughter.

Someone who had smiled at me and said she loved our family.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared on the screen.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

May you like

There was only one sentence.

*“Emily, if you found the cabinet, you need to know what Ryan and his mother have been hiding from you.””*
