Chapter 8

The Grandmother Who Wanted My Baby
I couldn't breathe.
Marcus grabbed the phone.
"Mom!"
Evelyn remained silent.
Then she said, "You should have listened to me."
Marcus's voice shook with anger.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere you can't reach me."
I clutched my belly.
"Stay away from our daughter."
Evelyn laughed.
"Oh, Nia. You're still calling her yours."
Marcus stood.
"That's enough!"
He ended the call.
For several seconds, we stared at each other.
Then he called Olivia.
She told us to remain at home and not respond to further calls.
Officers were already trying to locate Evelyn.
But I knew something.
She wasn't finished.
Not yet.
That night, Marcus showed me an old family document.
It was a copy of the Reed Family Trust.
He had found it among Daniel's belongings.
A section near the end described a special guardianship provision.
It stated that under certain circumstances, a designated trustee could seek legal guardianship over minor beneficiaries.
I stared at the language.
"She wanted control of the baby."
Marcus nodded.
"That's what I think."
I swallowed.
"But she can't just take our daughter."
"No."
He squeezed my hand.
"She can't."
Olivia later confirmed that the trust provision did not override parental rights.
Evelyn had no automatic legal authority to take our child.
But the documents suggested she had been preparing to make a guardianship claim based on fabricated allegations about our fitness as parents.
My stomach turned.
"She planned to accuse us of being unfit?"
Olivia nodded.
"We found draft affidavits containing false claims about your medical history and marriage."
I felt sick.
Evelyn had encouraged my pregnancy.
She had helped decorate the nursery.
She had bought tiny dresses.
She had kissed my stomach and called the baby her little princess.
And behind my back, she had been preparing documents to take her away.
I began crying.
Marcus held me.
"She's not getting near our daughter."
I nodded.
But I was terrified.
The next afternoon, Daniel arrived with a box of old financial records.
He had discovered them in storage after reviewing documents from his former business.
Inside were copies of trust amendments, bank statements, and letters Evelyn had signed.
Olivia examined them.
One document showed an attempted change to the trust's beneficiaries.
Another showed substantial payments to a former clinic administrator.
Then Olivia found a handwritten note.
She read it silently.
Her expression changed.
"What?" I asked.
She turned the paper toward us.
It contained three names.
MARCUS.
VANESSA.
NIA.
Beside them were arrows pointing toward the trust.
And beneath Nia's name, Evelyn had written:
CHILD MUST BE UNDER MY CONTROL.
My hands went numb.
Marcus stared at the paper.
"She's been planning this for years."
Olivia nodded.
"The records suggest a long-term scheme."
Daniel covered his face.
"I should have stopped her."
Marcus looked at him.
"You couldn't have known everything."
Daniel shook his head.
"I knew she was dangerous."
His voice broke.
"And I left you with her."
Marcus sat beside him.
"Dad, she took us away from each other."
Daniel began crying.
I watched them embrace.
The pain in our family had lasted for years.
But the truth was slowly putting the broken pieces back together.
That evening, Vanessa brought Noah and Caleb to our house.
She had received a message from Evelyn.
A photograph of the boys at their preschool.
No words.
Just the picture.
Vanessa was terrified.
"She knows where they are."
Marcus immediately called Olivia.
Officers increased patrols near Vanessa's home and the preschool.
Vanessa arranged for the boys to stay temporarily with her sister.
I watched her pack their little backpacks.
Noah looked confused.
"Are we going on vacation?"
Vanessa forced a smile.
"Just a little sleepover."
Caleb hugged his stuffed dinosaur.
"Can Nia come?"
My heart melted.
I crouched carefully.
"Not today, sweetheart."
He looked at my belly.
"Is your baby coming soon?"
I smiled.
"Very soon."
He grinned.
"Can we meet her?"
I felt tears rising.
"Of course."
For the first time, I imagined a future where our children knew one another.
Where the adults stopped fighting.
Where nobody used them as weapons.
I wanted that future desperately.
The next morning, the police located Evelyn at a hotel outside Atlanta.
She was arrested without incident.
The charges included forgery, fraud, conspiracy, and offenses connected to the alleged misuse of reproductive material and falsified medical records.
Additional allegations would be reviewed as the investigation continued.
Marcus was relieved.
But he wasn't happy.
He sat beside me after hearing the news.
"She's my mother."
I nodded.
"I know."
"I spent my whole life trusting her."
I squeezed his hand.
"That doesn't mean you have to protect what she did."
He began crying.
"I know."
I rested my head against his shoulder.
"You can love the person you thought she was and still hold her accountable for who she became."
He kissed my forehead.
"How do you always know what to say?"
I smiled sadly.
"I don't."
Then I placed his hand against my belly.
"I just know what I want our daughter to learn."
He looked at me.
"What?"
"That love should never require silence."
He closed his eyes.
For several minutes, we stayed that way.
Then my stomach tightened.
I gasped.
Marcus immediately sat up.
"Nia?"
I waited.
Another wave of pain spread across my lower back.
I looked at the clock.
Then at him.
"Marcus."
His face changed.
"What?"
I gripped his hand.
May you like
"I think our daughter is coming."
And this time, nothing was going to keep us from meeting her together.
