Chapter 2

The Name Inside the Envelope
I watched Marcus pull the folded paper from the envelope.
Every sound in the ballroom seemed to disappear.
His fingers shook.
My heart was beating so hard that I could feel it in my throat.
"Marcus," I whispered, "please don't do this here."
He ignored me.
He unfolded the paper.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
For several seconds, his face was completely blank.
Finally, he looked at me.
"Why is my name on this?"
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Vanessa's confident expression vanished.
"What?"
Marcus raised the document.
"Why does this say I'm the biological father?"
I closed my eyes.
The truth was finally out.
But it wasn't the whole truth.
Not even close.
Vanessa snatched the paper from him.
She scanned it.
Her lips parted.
"This doesn't make sense."
Marcus turned toward me.
"Nia, what is this?"
I could barely speak.
"It's a report from the fertility clinic."
He stared.
"What fertility clinic?"
My throat tightened.
"The one we visited last year."
He frowned.
"We never went to a fertility clinic."
I looked at him.
"Yes, we did."
His face changed.
Then he shook his head.
"No. We went to a specialist for routine testing."
"That specialist worked at a fertility center."
I could see the confusion in his eyes.
And beneath it, growing fear.
Vanessa held up the first report.
"He had a vasectomy. The follow-up test confirmed it."
"I know," I whispered.
Marcus stared at me.
"You knew?"
I nodded.
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
"I found out three months ago."
He stepped backward.
"Three months?"
"I wanted to tell you."
"Then why didn't you?"
I looked toward Evelyn.
His mother had gone strangely quiet.
She stood beside the table, gripping the back of a chair.
Her expression frightened me.
Because she wasn't surprised.
She looked guilty.
I swallowed.
"Because somebody begged me not to."
Marcus followed my gaze.
"Mom?"
Evelyn looked away.
Vanessa stepped between us.
"Wait. You're saying there's a report proving Marcus is the father?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
She shook her head.
"That's impossible."
"That's what I thought too."
Marcus looked at the document again.
The report described stored reproductive material collected before his procedure and later used in an assisted reproduction process.
His name appeared beside a donor identification number.
My name appeared under the patient information.
The genetic relationship had been verified through laboratory testing.
I had spent weeks trying to understand every sentence.
And now my husband was staring at it without knowing any of the circumstances.
"Stored sperm?" he whispered.
His eyes widened.
"I never agreed to that."
My stomach dropped.
I had been afraid he would say those words.
I had hoped there was an explanation.
But I knew what they meant.
"Marcus," I said softly, "I thought you had."
He looked at me.
"What?"
"The clinic told me you had signed the authorization."
He shook his head.
"I didn't."
I reached for the chair behind me.
My legs were weakening.
"That's not possible."
He stepped toward me.
"Nia, look at me."
I raised my eyes.
"I didn't sign anything."
Suddenly, Evelyn spoke.
"That's enough."
Everyone turned.
She stepped away from the table.
"Marcus, your wife is eight months pregnant. This isn't the place."
Marcus stared at her.
"Mom, do you know something?"
She avoided his eyes.
"Let's discuss this privately."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Oh, now everybody wants privacy."
Evelyn shot her a furious look.
"You had no right bringing children into this."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"I came because your son needed to know the truth."
"Which truth?" Evelyn demanded.
Vanessa froze.
I looked between them.
Something was wrong.
Something much bigger than my pregnancy.
Marcus noticed it too.
"Mom."
His voice was low.
"What did you do?"
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Nothing that can't be explained."
My heart sank.
Marcus took the medical report from Vanessa.
He stared at the date.
Then his face changed.
"Wait."
He looked at me.
"This procedure happened before we met."
I nodded.
"Yes."
"Why did you never tell me?"
My voice broke.
"Because I didn't know until I was already pregnant."
He stared.
"And you didn't think I deserved to know?"
"I did."
Tears blurred my vision.
"But I was scared."
"Of me?"
I shook my head.
"Of what someone had done to us."
For the first time, his anger softened.
Then I felt a sharp tightening across my stomach.
I gasped.
Marcus reached toward me.
"Nia?"
I gripped the table.
Another painful pressure followed.
I had experienced occasional tightening before.
But this felt different.
"Something's wrong."
His face drained.
"What's happening?"
I placed both hands beneath my belly.
"I don't know."
The room erupted.
Someone called for help.
Vanessa moved the twins away from the crowd.
Evelyn rushed toward me.
I instinctively pulled back.
"Don't touch me."
She froze.
I looked straight at her.
"You knew about the procedure."
Her eyes filled.
"Nia—"
"You knew."
Marcus stared at his mother.
"What is she talking about?"
Evelyn began crying.
"I was trying to protect you."
Marcus's voice rose.
"From what?"
I doubled over as another wave of pain tightened around my stomach.
Marcus caught me.
"Call an ambulance!"
His champagne glass fell from the table.
It shattered across the marble floor.
He held me against his chest.
"Baby, stay with me."
I clutched his jacket.
"Please don't let anything happen to her."
His eyes filled.
"Nothing's going to happen to our daughter."
I looked up.
"You still believe she's yours?"
He swallowed.
"I don't know what happened."
Then he pressed his forehead against mine.
"But you're my wife, and she's our baby."
I began sobbing.
The ambulance arrived minutes later.
As paramedics helped me onto a stretcher, I saw Evelyn standing beside Vanessa.
They were arguing quietly.
Vanessa held out her phone.
I heard only one sentence.
"If Marcus finds out what you did to those boys, he'll never forgive you."
Evelyn turned white.
I tried to call Marcus.
But another contraction stole my breath.
The ambulance doors closed.
And as we pulled away, I realized something horrifying.

The secret surrounding my unborn daughter wasn't the only lie in my husband's family.
Those twin boys were connected to something Evelyn desperately wanted buried.
