Chapter 1

The Secret That Destroyed My Baby Shower
The happiest day of my pregnancy ended with my husband demanding to know who had fathered my unborn child.
And the woman who destroyed everything was someone I had never seen before.
I was eight months pregnant, standing beneath a crystal chandelier in a beautiful Atlanta ballroom.
Pink balloons floated above white roses.
A giant gold sign behind me read OH BABY.
Nearly eighty guests had gathered to celebrate the little girl Marcus and I were expecting.
My husband looked handsome in his royal-blue suit.
He stood beside the gift table, holding a champagne glass and smiling at our friends.
For the first time in years, I believed our marriage was finally becoming everything I had dreamed of.
Then the ballroom doors slammed open.
A woman in a fitted emerald-green dress marched inside.
Her sleek black bob swung against her jaw.
She was holding the hands of two little boys.
Identical twins.
Both wore pale-blue shirts and beige pants.
Neither looked older than five.
The woman marched straight toward the gift table.
Before anyone could stop her, she slammed a thick medical document onto the white tablecloth.
"STOP CELEBRATING!"
The music died.
Every conversation stopped.
Marcus froze with his champagne glass halfway to his mouth.
The woman pointed at him.
"Your husband needs to see this!"
My heart began pounding.
I placed one hand over my pregnant belly.
"Excuse me?"
She ignored me.
Her eyes remained locked on Marcus.
I looked at him.
The smile had disappeared from his face.
His skin had turned pale.
"Marcus?" I whispered.
He didn't answer.
The woman laughed bitterly.
"Look at him. He knows exactly who I am."
I stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
She turned toward me.
"My name is Vanessa."
Then she pointed toward the boys.
"Ask your husband why he never told you about these two children."
A terrible silence filled the ballroom.
I looked down at the twins.
One boy tightened his grip on his mother's hand.
The other stared at Marcus with frightened eyes.
My stomach twisted.
"Marcus?"
My husband's jaw tightened.
"Vanessa, not here."
Those three words nearly knocked the breath from my lungs.
He knew her.
He knew those boys.
And he had never mentioned them to me.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Not here?"
Her voice shook with fury.
"You had five years to tell the truth!"
Marcus set down his glass.
"Lower your voice."
"Why? So your wife can keep pretending she married an honest man?"
A few guests gasped.
My mother-in-law, Evelyn, rose from her chair.
Her silver hair gleamed beneath the chandeliers.
"Marcus," she said sharply, "what is going on?"
He ignored her.
Instead, he reached for Vanessa's arm.
She jerked away.
"Don't touch me!"
The twins flinched.
I felt my baby kick.
Hard.
I rubbed my stomach, trying to steady my breathing.
"Somebody please explain what is happening."
Vanessa picked up the document.
"This is what happened."
She held it toward Marcus.
"Tell your wife what the doctor confirmed after Noah and Caleb were born."
I looked at the twins again.
Noah.
Caleb.
The names seemed to echo inside my head.
Marcus took one step forward.
"Vanessa, stop."
She laughed.
"You're still trying to control the story?"
"You're upsetting Nia."
"Oh, now you're worried about upsetting her?"
Vanessa turned toward me.
"I'm sorry you're hearing this way."
But her expression wasn't apologetic.
It was determined.
Almost desperate.
She extended the document.
"Read it."
My fingers trembled as I accepted the pages.
At first, the words blurred.
Patient information.
Medical consultation.
Laboratory findings.
A procedure date from several years earlier.
Then I saw my husband's name.
MARCUS ANTHONY REED.
I scanned the next paragraph.
My heartbeat became thunder.
The report described a confirmed infertility procedure.
A vasectomy.
Performed years before Marcus and I married.
A follow-up examination indicated that the procedure had been successful.
I read the sentence again.
And again.
My mouth went dry.
"Marcus?"
He stared at the floor.
"Baby, listen."
I looked at him.
"You told me you had never had surgery."
He swallowed.
"I know."
"You told me we were both healthy when we started trying for a baby."
"Nia—"
"You sat beside me at every prenatal appointment!"
My voice cracked.
"You cried when we heard her heartbeat!"
Guests whispered around us.
I hardly noticed.
The room seemed to tilt.
I placed both hands beneath my stomach.
Our daughter.
Our little girl.
The child I had spent months talking to every night.
Suddenly, Marcus looked at me differently.
Not with love.
Not with joy.
With suspicion.
He stepped closer.
"Nia."
I shook my head.
"Don't."
His voice dropped.
"Whose baby are you carrying?"
The words struck harder than a slap.
Someone gasped.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
I stared at the man I had loved for six years.
"What did you just say?"
Marcus pointed toward my stomach.
"If I had that procedure, then how are you pregnant?"
Tears burned my eyes.
"Marcus, I can explain."
His expression hardened.
"Then explain!"
I stepped backward.
He had no idea what those words were doing to me.
He had no idea what I had endured.
Or what I had discovered three months earlier.
And I was terrified that the truth would destroy him.
Vanessa reached inside her handbag.
"Actually, Marcus, there's something else."
She removed a sealed hospital envelope.
My blood turned cold.
I recognized the hospital logo.
I recognized the handwriting beneath the seal.
And I knew what was inside.
"No!"
I lunged toward her.
"Give me that!"
Marcus caught my wrist before I reached the envelope.
"Why are you trying to take it?"
"Because you don't understand!"
Vanessa held it above my hand.
Her expression changed.
For a moment, she looked almost sad.
"This envelope contains the father's name."
The ballroom went silent.
Marcus released my wrist.
Slowly, he took the envelope from Vanessa.
I couldn't breathe.
"Marcus, please."
He looked straight into my eyes.
"Is there something you need to tell me?"
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
"Yes."
His face crumpled.
"Then why didn't you tell me before?"
I reached for him.
He stepped away.
That hurt more than anything.
My husband gripped the envelope.
His fingers found the sealed edge.
I knew what would happen when he read it.
I knew whose name he would see.
And I knew the secret I had been protecting for months was about to become impossible to hide.
"Marcus," I whispered, "whatever happens, please remember that I love you."
His jaw tightened.
May you like
Then he began tearing open the envelope.
And I realized I might lose my husband before our daughter ever took her first breath.
