Surprise

Chapter 8

I didn't cry when Olivia finished explaining the document.

I simply stared at my daughter.

Grace was sleeping in her bassinet.

Her tiny fists rested beside her cheeks.

She had no idea that adults had discussed her birth as a financial opportunity before she even existed.

I felt something inside me change.

For days, I had been frightened.

I worried about Diane's threats.

Marcus's loyalty.

The legal documents.

The possibility that someone could take Grace from me.

But now I felt something stronger than fear.

Determination.

I looked at Olivia.

"What do we do?"

She closed the folder.

"We continue documenting the evidence and let the authorities investigate."

I nodded.

"And Grace?"

Simone Carter, who had joined the meeting, answered.

"We keep her legal and medical information secure, maintain appropriate boundaries, and respond to any filings through the court."

I looked at Dad.

He squeezed my hand.

"You're not alone."

I took a breath.

"Then let's do it."

The following weeks were exhausting.

Investigators reviewed financial records.

Banks examined disputed authorizations.

Attorneys worked to revoke questionable documents.

I attended medical appointments with Grace.

I spoke with a counselor who specialized in supporting new mothers experiencing family abuse.

And slowly, I began to feel like myself again.

Not the woman I had been before marrying Marcus.

Someone stronger.

Someone who understood that peace didn't mean avoiding every disagreement.

Sometimes peace meant refusing to let someone hurt you.

One afternoon, Marcus asked to see Grace.

I agreed to a supervised visit at Dad's house.

Not because I wanted to punish him.

But because trust had been damaged.

And rebuilding it required consistency.

Marcus arrived carrying a small bag of baby supplies.

He looked nervous.

When he saw Grace, his eyes filled with tears.

"Hi, baby girl."

I watched carefully as he washed his hands and sat down.

Then I placed Grace in his arms.

He held her securely.

His face crumpled.

"I missed you."

My heart tightened.

I still loved seeing him with our daughter.

There was tenderness in the way he looked at her.

But I also remembered how quickly that tenderness disappeared when Diane demanded obedience.

Marcus kissed Grace's forehead.

Then looked at me.

"Nia, thank you."

I nodded.

He swallowed.

"I know I don't deserve your trust right now."

I said nothing.

He continued.

"But I'm working on it."

I looked at him.

"How?"

He took a breath.

"I've continued therapy."

I nodded.

"And?"

"I've stopped giving Mom access to my accounts."

My heart lifted slightly.

He continued.

"I changed my passwords. I revoked the authorizations she had. And I've started reviewing every business document I signed."

I looked surprised.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"I found things I didn't understand."

My stomach tightened.

"Like what?"

He looked ashamed.

"Mom used my name on several companies."

I stared at him.

"Without telling you?"

"Some I signed. Others I don't recognize."

I felt a chill.

He continued.

"I gave everything to Olivia and the investigators."

I studied his face.

For the first time, Marcus wasn't asking me to ignore what happened.

He was taking action.

That mattered.

But it wasn't enough to erase the past.

I took a breath.

"Marcus, I appreciate what you're doing."

His eyes filled.

"But I need you to understand something."

He nodded.

"I can't return to the marriage we had."

His face fell.

I continued.

"That marriage required me to stay silent so your mother could stay happy."

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I know."

I swallowed.

"If we ever rebuild anything, it has to be different."

He nodded.

"Completely different."

I looked at Grace.

"She deserves parents who protect her."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"She does."

For the first time, I believed he might understand.

But I wasn't ready to trust him completely.

And that was okay.

A week later, Diane was formally charged in connection with several financial offenses arising from the investigation.

The authorities alleged that she had used false documentation and unauthorized transactions to control money.

Additional matters remained under review.

I learned about the charges from Olivia.

I sat quietly while she explained.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt tired.

For months, Diane had made me feel powerless.

Now the evidence was finally being examined by people she couldn't simply intimidate.

Olivia continued.

"The financial institutions have secured the disputed funds."

I exhaled.

"So Grace's money is safe?"

"The specific attempted transfer did not go through. The remaining assets are being protected and reviewed."

I nodded.

That was enough for now.

Then Olivia looked at me.

"Nia, there's another issue."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Several payments made to Diane's companies may involve money belonging to other investors."

I stared.

"Other families?"

She nodded.

"The investigation has expanded."

I felt sick.

I had thought Diane's cruelty was focused on me.

But now it seemed she might have harmed other people too.

That evening, Dad received a call from an old business associate.

The man had invested in a Whitmore-related company years earlier.

He claimed he had been unable to recover his money.

He also said Diane threatened him when he asked questions.

Dad listened carefully.

Then referred him to the investigators.

I watched my father.

He looked tired.

For years, he had known Diane was difficult.

But even he hadn't understood how far she might go.

Later, we sat together in the garden.

Grace slept nearby.

Dad looked toward the trees.

"Nia, I owe you an apology."

I frowned.

"For what?"

He sighed.

"I knew Diane had a history of aggressive business tactics."

I shook my head.

"Daddy—"

He continued.

"But I didn't tell you enough."

I took his hand.

"You warned me she was controlling."

He looked sad.

"I could have been more direct."

I thought about it.

Then squeezed his fingers.

"Dad, I was in love."

He nodded.

"I know."

"I probably wouldn't have listened."

He smiled sadly.

"Maybe."

I leaned against him.

"But you listened when I called."

His eyes filled.

I continued.

"You came for me."

He kissed my forehead.

"Always."

For a moment, everything felt peaceful.

Then my phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

"Nia?"

His voice sounded shaken.

"What happened?"

He took a breath.

"Mom's attorney contacted me."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"She wants me to testify for her."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

Marcus swallowed.

"She says if I refuse, she'll reveal something about my father's death."

I froze.

"What?"

He sounded frightened.

"Nia, Mom says Dad didn't die the way she told me."

My heart began pounding.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus began crying.

"She says he was investigating her before he died."

I stared into the darkness.

Then he whispered,

"And she says I helped her cover it up when I was a teenager."

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The woman who had tried to take my daughter was now using her own son's childhood against him.

And I realized that even with the financial investigation underway, Diane still had one weapon left.

The secrets she had spent decades forcing her family to carry.
