Chapter 2

The man standing beneath the ballroom doors was Samuel Brooks.
My father's oldest friend.
And the head of security for the entire Windsor Grand Hotel.
I had known him since I was five.
He was a broad-shouldered man in his sixties, with silver hair and the kindest eyes I remembered from childhood.
But right now, those eyes were filled with alarm.
"Miss Nia?"
I tried to smile.
"Uncle Sam."
He crossed the lobby quickly.
Then stopped when he saw my cheek.
His expression changed.
"Who did that to you?"
I looked down.
"It's complicated."
He shook his head.
"Nothing about that mark looks complicated."
My tears returned.
He glanced at Grace.
"Is the baby all right?"
I nodded.
"She's okay."
Samuel lowered his voice.
"Your father called me."
My heart lifted.
"Already?"
"About thirty seconds ago."
I almost smiled.
That sounded exactly like Dad.
When something involved his family, he never wasted time.
Samuel gestured toward a private hallway.
"Come with me. There's a quiet suite where you can sit down."
I hesitated.
"I don't want to cause trouble."
His expression softened.
"Nia, you're not causing trouble."
Those words nearly made me cry again.
For months, I had heard the opposite.
Whenever Diane insulted me, Marcus said I was creating conflict.
Whenever I complained, he told me to be more understanding.
Whenever I tried to set boundaries, he accused me of making family gatherings uncomfortable.
I had started believing that protecting my peace was somehow selfish.
Samuel looked at me gently.
"Come on, sweetheart."
I followed him.
He didn't touch Grace.
He didn't try to take her from my arms.
He simply walked beside me and made sure nobody approached.
That small kindness felt enormous.
We entered a private sitting room overlooking the gardens.
Samuel closed the door.
Then asked a female staff member to bring water and contact the hotel's medical team.
I sat on a soft couch.
Only then did I realize how badly my body was shaking.
Grace stirred against my chest.
I checked her carefully.
She was warm.
Comfortable.
Still sleeping.
I kissed her forehead.
"I'm sorry, baby."
Samuel sat across from me.
"What happened?"
I told him.
The argument.
Diane demanding the baby.
The slap.
Marcus telling me to leave.
Samuel listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he looked furious.
"Did anyone witness it?"
I laughed bitterly.
"Half the ballroom."
He nodded.
"Good."
I looked up.
"Good?"
"Because nobody is going to pretend it didn't happen."
He stood.
"I'm preserving the security footage."
My stomach tightened.
"Uncle Sam, please don't make a scene."
He stopped.
Then looked at me.
"Nia, your father would never forgive me if I let someone destroy evidence of an assault."
I swallowed.
He was right.
But I was still afraid.
That frightened me more than anything.
Why was I scared to defend myself?
Why was I worried about embarrassing Diane when she had humiliated me in public?
Samuel seemed to understand.
"You don't have to decide anything right now."
I nodded.
"Thank you."
A few minutes later, the medical team arrived.
A nurse checked my blood pressure and examined my cheek.
She asked about dizziness, pain, and my recent delivery.
I answered honestly.
My cheek was swollen.
My body was exhausted.
But I was stable.
The nurse advised me to contact my obstetrician and seek further care if symptoms worsened.
I thanked her.
Then Samuel's phone rang.
He stepped away.
When he returned, his expression was serious.
"Your father is on his way."
I looked at the clock.
"He lives forty minutes away."
Samuel smiled faintly.
"He's closer than you think."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer, someone knocked.
A hotel employee entered.
"Mr. Brooks, Mrs. Whitmore is demanding access to this room."
My stomach dropped.
Diane.
Of course.
Samuel's expression hardened.
"Tell her this is a private guest suite."
The employee hesitated.
"She says the young woman inside is her daughter-in-law."
Samuel answered,
"That doesn't give her permission to enter."
I looked down at Grace.
My heart began racing.
Then Diane's voice echoed from the hallway.
"NIA! OPEN THIS DOOR!"
I flinched.
Samuel immediately moved toward the entrance.
"Stay seated."
Diane began pounding.
"Don't you dare hide from me!"
I could hear Marcus speaking quietly.
"Mom, please."
She snapped at him.
"She's making us look like criminals!"
Samuel opened the door just enough to step into the hallway.
I heard his voice.
"Mrs. Whitmore, you need to leave."
Diane sounded outraged.
"Do you know who I am?"
"Yes."
"Then move."
"No."
There was a moment of silence.
Then Diane shouted,
"My son owns half this hotel!"
My blood turned cold.
That was new.
Marcus had never told me he owned any part of the Windsor Grand.
I knew his family invested in hospitality businesses.
But ownership?
That was something different.
Samuel's reply was calm.
"Mrs. Whitmore, your son does not have authority over this suite."
Diane laughed.
"You're going to regret saying that."
Then Marcus spoke.
"Uncle Sam?"
I heard Samuel pause.
"Marcus."
My husband continued.
"Can I please speak to Nia?"
I closed my eyes.
Part of me wanted him to come inside.
I wanted him to apologize.
I wanted him to say he had been wrong.
But another part of me remembered how he looked away while his mother struck me.
I couldn't forget that.
Samuel turned toward me.
"Nia, it's your decision."
I took a shaky breath.
"Not yet."
He nodded.
Then closed the door.
For the first time in our marriage, Marcus wasn't allowed to decide when we talked.
And somehow, that terrified me.
My phone began vibrating.
Marcus.
Again.
And again.
I didn't answer.
Then a message appeared.
Nia, please stop embarrassing my mother. Come out so we can settle this.
I stared at the screen.
Not an apology.
Not concern for Grace.
Not even a question about whether I was hurt.
He was worried about his mother.
I felt tears rise.
Then another message arrived.
Mom says your father is trying to interfere. Tell him to stay out of our marriage.
I almost laughed.
My father hadn't interfered in anything.
He had allowed me to make my own decisions.
Even when he disagreed.
Even when I married Marcus.
Even when I insisted Diane wasn't as cruel as people believed.
He had trusted me.
And now I needed him.
I typed one sentence.
You should have thought about our marriage before allowing your mother to hit me.
Then I turned off notifications.
A few minutes later, Samuel returned.
He carried a folder.
"There's something you need to know."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He sat down.
"Your father asked me to review the hotel's ownership records."
I frowned.
"Why?"
Samuel hesitated.
"Nia, how much do you know about the Windsor Grand?"
I looked confused.
"It's one of Marcus's family's investments."
Samuel shook his head.
"Not exactly."
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
He opened the folder.
Inside were corporate documents.
Property records.
And a photograph of my father standing beside the hotel's original founder.
I stared.
"Why is Dad in that picture?"
Samuel looked at me gently.
"Because your father helped build this hotel."
I couldn't speak.
He continued.
"And when the company nearly collapsed fifteen years ago, he saved it."
My heart pounded.
"Then why does Diane act like she owns everything?"
Samuel's expression darkened.
"Because she doesn't think you know the truth."
Before I could ask another question, the door opened.
My father stepped inside.
He wore a charcoal-gray suit.
His silver beard was neatly trimmed.
His expression was calm.
But when he saw my swollen cheek, something changed in his eyes.
"Nia."
I stood.
"Daddy."
He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around me.
I began sobbing.
He held me carefully, making sure Grace remained secure between us.
"I'm here, baby girl."
I cried harder.
"Daddy, I tried."
He kissed my forehead.
"I know."
"I tried so hard to make them love me."
His voice broke.
"Oh, sweetheart."
He looked at my cheek.
Then whispered,
"You never had to earn the right to be treated with respect."
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I felt like a little girl again.
Safe.
Loved.
Protected.
Then Dad turned toward Samuel.
"Show me the footage."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Daddy..."
He looked back at me.
"I won't do anything reckless."
I nodded.
He continued.
"But I will not allow anyone to rewrite what happened."
Samuel opened his laptop.
The video began.
I saw myself standing beside Marcus.
I saw Diane approach.
I saw her point at Grace.
Then I watched her strike me.
My father didn't move.
He didn't shout.
He didn't curse.
He simply watched the screen.
When the video ended, he looked at Samuel.
"Make a secure copy."
Samuel nodded.
Then Dad turned toward me.
"Nia, I need to ask you something."
I swallowed.
"What?"
"Has Diane ever threatened you before?"
I looked away.
My father's expression changed.
"Nia?"
Tears filled my eyes.
I whispered,
"She told me she'd take Grace away if I ever left Marcus."
My father went completely still.
Then he asked,
"And what did Marcus say?"
I began crying.
"He told me she was only trying to help."
Dad closed his eyes.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he took my hand.
"Sweetheart, there's something I should have told you before your wedding."
I stared at him.
"What?"
His voice became quiet.
"Your mother-in-law has been trying to take something from our family for years."
May you like
My heart stopped.
"And I think she married her son into ours to get it."
