Surprise

Chapter 8

The Night Claire Lost Everything

I called Evelyn immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?"

"Mom, where are the girls?"

Her voice changed.

"Upstairs."

My heart pounded.

"Lock every door."

A pause.

"Why?"

"Claire is outside."

Evelyn gasped.

I heard movement.

Then Maya's voice in the background.

"Grandma?"

I swallowed.

"Mom, listen carefully."

My voice shook.

"Don't open the door."

Evelyn answered immediately.

"I won't."

I heard Lily begin crying.

My chest tightened.

Then Evelyn whispered, "She's knocking."

I closed my eyes.

"Don't answer."

The knocking became louder.

I could hear it through the phone.

Then Claire's voice.

"Marcus?"

My blood ran cold.

"Marcus, I know you're in there!"

Evelyn whispered, "She thinks you're home."

I looked at Detective Grant.

She was speaking urgently to officers.

I held the phone tighter.

"Mom, take the girls away from the front door."

Evelyn nodded.

"Come on, babies."

I heard footsteps.

Then Lily crying.

"Grandma, I'm scared."

My heart broke.

Evelyn's voice remained steady.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

I closed my eyes.

For fourteen months, Claire had been inside our home.

She'd eaten our food.

Sat on our couch.

Held my children.

Now she was outside.

And my daughters were afraid of her.

I felt sick.

A minute later, police sirens sounded in the distance.

Claire stopped knocking.

I held my breath.

Then Evelyn whispered, "She's leaving."

I looked at Grant.

"She's moving."

Grant spoke into her radio.

Officers reported seeing Claire enter a dark sedan.

She attempted to drive away.

But patrol vehicles blocked the street.

Within minutes, she was detained.

I nearly collapsed with relief.

Evelyn began crying.

"Marcus, what's happening?"

I swallowed.

"Mom, we found Elena."

Silence.

Then a broken whisper.

"What?"

I felt tears rising.

"She's alive."

Evelyn gasped.

I heard Maya scream.

Then Lily's voice.

"Mommy?"

I covered my mouth.

I wanted to be there.

I wanted to hold them.

Tell them everything was going to be okay.

But I was hours away.

And Elena was lying in a hospital bed.

I took a breath.

"She's safe."

Maya grabbed the phone.

"Dad!"

Her voice cracked.

"Is it really her?"

I began crying.

"Yes, sweetheart."

She sobbed.

"Can I talk to her?"

I looked toward Elena.

She was watching me.

Tears streaming down her cheeks.

I handed her the phone.

Elena swallowed.

"Maya?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Maya screamed.

"MOM!"

Elena began sobbing.

"Oh, baby."

I turned away.

I couldn't watch without breaking.

Maya cried so hard she could barely speak.

"I knew it!"

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know, sweetheart."

"I knew you were alive!"

Elena nodded through her tears.

"I'm so sorry."

Maya's voice broke.

"Please come home."

Elena held the phone tightly.

"I will."

Then Lily's small voice appeared.

"Mommy?"

Elena covered her mouth.

"Lily?"

Our youngest daughter began crying.

"I kept your pillow."

Elena sobbed.

"Oh, my baby."

I sat beside her.

She leaned against me.

Lily whispered, "Are you coming home for real?"

Elena smiled through tears.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"Promise?"

Elena took a shaky breath.

"I promise."

For the first time in fourteen months, our family was speaking together.

Not through memories.

Not through photographs.

But with Elena's voice filling the room.

And I felt something inside me begin to heal.

The next morning, investigators questioned Claire.

At first, she denied everything.

She claimed Elena had disappeared voluntarily.

She accused Daniel of lying.

She said the video was misleading.

But the evidence was overwhelming.

Elena's medical records.

Financial transfers.

Messages between Claire and Daniel.

Security footage.

And Elena's own testimony.

Then Daniel began cooperating.

He admitted helping conceal Elena's survival.

He also confirmed that Claire pushed her from the boat.

According to investigators, Claire had promised him money if he kept Elena away from the family.

She had also manipulated him by threatening to expose his financial crimes.

I felt disgusted.

My brother had betrayed me.

But Claire had been the driving force behind the plan.

She'd wanted my wife gone.

And she'd used our grief to move into her place.

When Detective Grant told me Claire had been charged, I didn't celebrate.

I felt exhausted.

Sad.

Angry.

But mostly grateful that my daughters were safe.

Then I learned something else.

Claire had been moving money from my company while I was grieving.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

She'd forged authorizations.

Created false invoices.

And used Daniel's access to hide transfers.

The financial investigation expanded.

Victor Brooks was also located and detained in connection with the fraud network.

For years, he'd used shell companies to move stolen funds.

Elena had discovered his connection to Daniel shortly before the boating incident.

When she threatened to expose the scheme, Claire decided to remove her.

I stared at the evidence.

Every secret.

Every transfer.

Every lie.

They had all led to the same moment.

My wife falling into the water.

And Claire stepping into our home.

But the truth was finally coming out.

Later that afternoon, Elena was cleared for travel under medical supervision.

I helped her pack the small belongings she'd brought from the residence.

She held her necklace.

The silver crescent moon.

The tiny blue stone.

Then she looked at me.

"Marcus."

I smiled gently.

"Yes?"

She swallowed.

"Do you think the girls will still recognize me?"

My heart broke.

I stepped closer.

"Elena."

She looked down.

"Fourteen months is a long time."

I took her hands.

"They never stopped loving you."

Her eyes filled.

"What if I'm different?"

I smiled sadly.

"Then we'll learn who you are now."

She began crying.

I kissed her forehead.

"Together."

For the first time since finding her, she smiled without fear.

Then she whispered, "Take me home."

I nodded.

"Always."

But as we prepared to leave, Detective Grant called with one final update.

"Marcus, we found something in Claire's apartment."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A detailed plan."

I stared.

"For what?"

Grant hesitated.

"To petition for custody of your daughters after marrying you."

I felt physically sick.

Claire hadn't simply wanted Elena's husband.

She'd wanted her entire life.

Her home.

Her business.

Her children.

And she'd been planning it all while my daughters cried for their mother.

I looked toward Elena.

She was standing by the window.

Alive.

Free.

Ready to come home.

May you like

For the first time, I understood how close we'd come to losing everything.

And I silently promised myself that nobody would ever again decide my family's future through lies.
