Chapter 4

The Name Elena Buried
I stared at Evelyn.
"Anna Brooks?"
She nodded.
Tears gathered in her eyes.
I couldn't understand.
"Elena told me her name had always been Elena Carter."
Evelyn lowered her head.
"That was the name she used after we moved to Georgia."
My stomach twisted.
"Why?"
She sat down slowly.
Maya stood beside me.
Lily had fallen asleep on the couch after crying herself exhausted.
I tucked a blanket around her.
Then returned to the dining table.
Evelyn clasped her hands.
"Elena was born Anna Elena Brooks."
I stared.
"Why change it?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"Because her father was a dangerous man."
My heart tightened.
I'd met Evelyn's second husband years earlier.
He was kind and quiet.
He died before Lily was born.
But Elena rarely spoke about her biological father.
I assumed he had abandoned them.
Evelyn continued.
"His name was Victor Brooks."
I leaned forward.
"What happened?"
"He controlled everything."
Her voice trembled.
"Money. Friends. Where we lived. Who I could speak to."
Maya looked horrified.
"Grandma?"
Evelyn reached for her hand.
"Your mother was only eleven when I finally left him."
I felt cold.
"What did he do?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"He worked for people who moved stolen money through construction businesses."
My stomach tightened.
Construction businesses.
Like mine.
I thought of Daniel.
The missing funds.
The strange transfers.
"Was he involved with my brother?"
Evelyn looked at me.
"I don't know."
She wiped her cheeks.
"But Elena was frightened when Daniel began asking questions about her past."
I stared.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"She wanted that life to stay buried."
I sat back.
For fourteen years, I'd believed I knew everything about my wife.
We shared a home.
Raised two daughters.
Built a business.
And somehow, there was an entire part of her childhood I'd never understood.
I didn't feel angry at Elena.
I felt devastated that she'd carried fear alone.
Maya whispered, "Was Mom hiding from her father?"
Evelyn nodded.
"For a long time."
I looked at the photograph on the phone.
Elena standing beside Daniel.
The necklace.
The hotel.
The secret name.
Something wasn't right.
If Elena had escaped her father years ago, why would she return to that identity now?
Unless someone had forced her.
I called Detective Grant.
"Evelyn just told me about Anna Brooks."
Grant listened carefully.
Then asked several questions.
When I explained Victor's history, her voice sharpened.
"Marcus, this may be more serious than we realized."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
"We found records connecting Daniel to a man named Victor Brooks."
I froze.
"Elena's father?"
"Yes."
I looked at Evelyn.
Her face crumpled.
Grant continued.
"Victor is suspected of involvement in a long-running financial fraud investigation."
I closed my eyes.
"Was Elena helping him?"
"We don't know."
I swallowed.
"But we believe she may have been trying to expose him."
I felt a strange mixture of hope and fear.
My Elena.
She had always hated dishonesty.
She once returned an extra twenty dollars after a cashier gave her too much change.
She wouldn't willingly help people steal from innocent families.
I knew that.
But why was she with Daniel?
Why hadn't she called me?
Why let us believe she was dead?
Grant asked me to provide Elena's old business files.
I agreed.
Then I remembered Claire.
"Detective, Claire has access to some of those records."
Grant became quiet.
"Marcus, we're already reviewing her role."
I felt sick.
"What does that mean?"
"Her name appears on several transfers connected to Daniel."
My hands tightened.
"How much?"
Grant hesitated.
"More than two hundred thousand dollars."
I stopped breathing.
Claire had been moving money through my business.
While sitting at my dinner table.
While comforting my daughters.
While telling me to move on.
I felt something inside me break.
"Where is she now?"
"We're trying to locate her."
I stared toward the hallway.
She had left only hours earlier.
I should have known.
I should have stopped trusting her.
But then I remembered something important.
Maya had been watching Claire for months.
She'd complained that Claire spent too much time in my office.
That she locked doors.
That she spoke quietly on the phone.
I had told Maya she was imagining things.
My chest tightened.
I turned toward my daughter.
"Maya."
She looked up.
"I'm sorry."
Her eyes filled.
"For what?"
"For not listening."
She shook her head.
"Dad..."
"No."
My voice broke.
"You tried to tell me something was wrong."
I stepped closer.
"And I dismissed you."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I just wanted Mom back."
I hugged her.
"I know."
She began sobbing against my chest.
I held her tightly.
Then she whispered something unexpected.
"Dad, I found something in Claire's room."
I froze.
"What?"
She pulled away.
"Last week."
My stomach tightened.
"What did you find?"
Maya hesitated.
"A photograph."
I stared.
"Of who?"
She looked toward Evelyn.
Then back at me.
"Mom."
My heart pounded.
"An old picture?"
Maya shook her head.
"No."
My stomach dropped.
"How do you know?"
"Because Mom was wearing the blue dress from the hotel video."
I couldn't breathe.
Maya continued.
"And Claire was standing beside her."
The room went silent.
I stared at my daughter.
"Where is that photograph?"
Maya reached into her backpack.
Then removed a folded printout.
She placed it on the table.
I looked down.
Elena stood outside the Ocean Crest Resort.
Wearing the same blue dress.
The same necklace.
Beside her stood Claire.
Smiling.
And on the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
Three days earlier.
I stared at it.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
STOP LOOKING FOR ELENA IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTERS TO STAY SAFE.
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Because whoever had taken my wife was now threatening my children.
And I finally understood that finding Elena might be far more dangerous than losing her had ever been.
