Surprise

Chapter 5

The forensic accountant's report arrived the next morning.

I opened it in Patricia's office.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The transfers weren't random.

They followed a pattern.

Small payments at first.

Then larger amounts.

Then a series of transfers disguised as vendor reimbursements.

The total exceeded three hundred thousand dollars.

I stared at the figures.

“Raymond approved these?”

The accountant nodded.

“Most of them.”

My stomach tightened.

“And Vanessa?”

He turned to another page.

“Several transfers went into an account associated with her.”

I closed my eyes.

My wife.

My financial manager.

Two people I trusted with different parts of my life.

Now their names appeared together in a report about missing company money.

Patricia looked at me.

“Marcus, we'll need to let the financial investigation establish exactly what happened.”

I nodded.

“I understand.”

The accountant continued.

“Some payments appear to have been routed through a consulting company.”

I looked up.

“What company?”

He handed me a page.

V&R Administrative Services.

I stared at the name.

V&R.

Vanessa and Raymond.

My chest tightened.

“Did they own it?”

“The records suggest they were associated with the entity. We'll need to verify its ownership and operations.”

I leaned back.

I remembered Raymond recommending outside administrative support.

He told me our growing company needed help handling invoices.

Vanessa offered to organize household paperwork so I could focus on work.

I had been grateful.

I thought they were helping me.

Now I wondered whether they had been creating ways to move money without my knowledge.

The accountant continued.

“There's another issue.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Several invoices refer to subcontractors who deny providing the listed services.”

I stared at him.

“Fake invoices?”

“Potentially. We need further confirmation.”

I looked at the report.

There was no simple explanation for the pattern.

But I refused to rush toward conclusions without proof.

I had already seen what happened when an innocent person was accused.

My own son had suffered because Vanessa claimed he stole money without evidence.

I wasn't going to repeat that mistake.

I took a breath.

“Let's document everything properly.”

Patricia nodded.

“Exactly.”

That afternoon, I contacted the company's bank and followed the appropriate procedures to restrict access to accounts while the matter was reviewed.

I also arranged for an independent financial controller to oversee payments.

Raymond's authority to approve transfers was suspended pending investigation.

The company would continue operating.

Employees would still be paid.

Subcontractors would still receive verified payments.

I wasn't going to let the misconduct of a few people destroy the livelihoods of everyone else.

Then Raymond called.

I stared at the screen.

For years, he had been more than an employee.

He was my friend.

My business partner.

The man who helped me build the company after Danielle died.

He attended Malik's birthdays.

Came to our house for Thanksgiving.

Helped coach Malik's basketball team.

I had trusted him like family.

Now I couldn't bear to hear his voice.

I let the call go unanswered.

Then I forwarded the message to Patricia.

She advised me to let the legal and investigative process handle relevant communication.

I agreed.

That evening, I returned to Angela's house.

Malik sat on the couch watching basketball.

When he saw me, he smiled faintly.

“Hey, Dad.”

I sat beside him.

“Hey, son.”

For several minutes, we watched the game.

Then he turned toward me.

“Are you going back to Vanessa?”

My chest tightened.

I took a breath.

“No.”

He stared at me.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“I'm not returning to the marriage we had.”

His eyes filled.

“Because of me?”

I shook my head immediately.

“Because of her choices.”

He looked down.

I continued.

“Malik, you didn't break our marriage.”

He swallowed.

“You didn't cause the money problem.”

His eyes filled.

“And you didn't deserve to be hit.”

He began crying.

I pulled him close.

“You are my son. Nothing changes that.”

He held me tightly.

For several minutes, we sat together.

Then he whispered, “I thought you'd send me away.”

My heart broke.

I closed my eyes.

“I'm sorry she made you believe that.”

He nodded.

I continued.

“And I'm sorry I didn't recognize what was happening sooner.”

He leaned against me.

“It's okay, Dad.”

I shook my head.

“You don't have to make me feel better.”

He looked up.

I smiled sadly.

“My job is to make sure you feel safe.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

After dinner, Angela asked me to step into the kitchen.

She looked serious.

“Marcus, have you checked Malik's school records?”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“He told me Vanessa contacted his counselor.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Last month.”

I stared at her.

“What did she say?”

Angela hesitated.

“She told the counselor Malik was stealing and lying at home.”

I closed my eyes.

The damage had spread beyond our house.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted me to believe Malik was dishonest.

She had been building a reputation around him.

A reputation that could make future accusations easier to believe.

I felt sick.

The next morning, I called Malik's school.

I arranged a meeting with his counselor, Mrs. Robinson.

She listened while I explained the situation.

I showed her appropriate documentation confirming that the theft accusation was disputed and that video evidence contradicted Vanessa's account.

Mrs. Robinson looked concerned.

“Mr. Carter, thank you for bringing this to our attention.”

I nodded.

“My son has been very frightened.”

She sighed.

“I noticed he became withdrawn recently.”

My chest tightened.

“Did he tell you why?”

“He said there were problems at home.”

I looked down.

She continued.

“We want to support him.”

I thanked her.

We agreed on a plan to help Malik feel comfortable at school.

Mrs. Robinson also explained that any unsupported allegations in his student records would be reviewed and corrected according to school procedures.

I felt relief.

One more piece of his reputation could be repaired.

That afternoon, Malik came home smiling.

He had received a good grade on his science test.

I hugged him.

“I'm proud of you.”

He grinned.

“Thanks, Dad.”

Then he looked nervous.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“Can I still play basketball this season?”

I stared at him.

“Of course.”

His face lit up.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Why wouldn't you?”

He looked down.

“Vanessa said I was grounded until I admitted stealing her necklace.”

My chest tightened.

I took his hand.

“That's over.”

He smiled.

“Okay.”

Then he ran to call his coach.

I watched him.

For the first time in months, he sounded like a teenager again.

Excited.

Hopeful.

Free to enjoy something he loved.

That evening, Patricia called.

Her voice was serious.

“Marcus, the financial investigation has uncovered another concern.”

I sat upright.

“What happened?”

“Several company payments appear to have been used for personal expenses.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind?”

“Travel. Luxury purchases. And a rental property.”

I stared at the wall.

“A rental property?”

Patricia hesitated.

“Yes.”

I took a breath.

“Whose?”

She answered carefully.

“The records suggest it may have been leased for Vanessa.”

I closed my eyes.

My wife had been living in our beautiful home.

Driving a car I helped pay for.

Wearing expensive clothes.

And apparently maintaining another property I knew nothing about.

I felt cold.

Then Patricia added something that made my stomach drop.

“Marcus, the lease records also list Raymond as an authorized occupant.”

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

May you like

Because the betrayal was no longer only financial.

I was beginning to wonder whether my wife and my closest friend had been hiding an entirely different relationship.
