Chapter 2

I pressed play.
The recording opened with an empty foyer.
Bright sunlight spilled across the cream marble floor.
The dark wooden table stood exactly where it was now.
No money.
No envelope.
Nothing.
I checked the timestamp.
Forty-two minutes earlier.
Vanessa suddenly leaned toward me.
“Marcus, please.”
I ignored her.
On the screen, she entered the foyer carrying a white envelope.
I felt my stomach tighten.
She looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the front door.
She appeared to be checking whether anyone was watching.
Next, she opened the envelope.
Thick bundles of cash slid onto the table.
I stopped breathing.
Malik whispered, “Dad.”
I held up one hand.
“Wait.”
Vanessa turned away.
“I don't need to watch this.”
I glanced at her.
“You should.”
On the screen, she arranged the money into neat stacks.
Then she opened a small black purse.
She removed several more bundles.
The camera captured everything.
Every movement.
Every glance toward the hallway.
Then Vanessa did something that made my blood run cold.
She took a photograph of the money.
Afterward, she slipped the white envelope beneath a decorative bowl.
I paused the video.
The room became silent.
I slowly looked at my wife.
“You put the money there.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Marcus—”
“You arranged it before Malik came downstairs.”
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
I stared at her.
“Then explain.”
Her eyes moved toward Malik.
He stepped closer to me.
Vanessa noticed.
And for the first time, she seemed to understand that she had lost control of the room.
I looked back at the recording.
“There's more.”
I pressed play.
Several minutes passed.
Then Malik appeared carrying his backpack.
He walked toward the front door.
Vanessa stepped into his path.
The camera had no clear audio from the far end of the hallway, but their body language was unmistakable.
Malik tried to move around her.
She blocked him.
Then she pointed toward the cash.
My son shook his head.
Vanessa grabbed his backpack strap.
He pulled away.
She moved closer.
Then she slapped him.
I froze the image.
My hand began shaking.
There it was.
The moment I had heard from upstairs.
My child recoiling.
My wife standing over him.
The money she had placed on the table.
The entire accusation collapsing under the truth.
I turned toward Malik.
“Son.”
His eyes filled.
“Dad?”
I pulled him into my arms.
He began sobbing.
“I told you.”
“I know.”
He clung to my shirt.
“I didn't steal anything.”
I closed my eyes.
“I know, baby.”
For several seconds, I held him.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
She stood beside the marble island.
Her face was pale.
I took a breath.
“You framed my son.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
I raised the phone.
“I just watched you do it.”
“Marcus, there are things you don't know.”
I felt anger rising.
“Then start talking.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I noticed her eyes filling with tears.
Once, those tears would have made me soften.
I had spent two years comforting her whenever she claimed Malik was disrespectful.
Whenever she said he refused to accept her.
Whenever she accused him of trying to ruin our marriage.
Now I wondered how many of those stories had been lies.
I looked at Malik.
“Has she done something like this before?”
He hesitated.
Vanessa immediately snapped, “Don't you dare!”
I stepped between them.
“Stop.”
She stared at me.
I turned back toward my son.
“Malik, you're safe to tell me the truth.”
His lower lip trembled.
“She told you I broke her necklace.”
My chest tightened.
I remembered that argument.
Three months earlier, Vanessa claimed her diamond necklace had been damaged.
She blamed Malik.
I made him apologize.
He insisted he hadn't touched it.
I thought he was being stubborn.
Now I felt sick.
“Did you break it?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“What else?”
He looked down.
“She said I scratched her car.”
My heart dropped.
Two months earlier, Vanessa showed me a long scrape along the passenger door of her Mercedes.
She claimed Malik had hit it while riding his bicycle.
I made him pay for the repair from his summer job savings.
Three hundred dollars.
He cried when I told him.
I remembered being disappointed in him.
I remembered saying honesty mattered.
Now those memories made me want to fall to my knees.
“Malik,” I whispered, “did you scratch the car?”
“No, Dad.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“He's changing his story!”
I looked at her.
“Not another word.”
She stepped backward.
I turned toward Malik.
“Why didn't you tell me what was happening?”
He stared at the floor.
“I tried.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
He began crying.
“I tried, Dad.”
I remembered the evenings he stood outside my office.
The times he knocked while I was working.
The way he asked whether we could talk.
And how often I told him we'd speak later.
Later.
Tomorrow.
After dinner.
After my meeting.
My son wiped his face.
“You always said Vanessa was trying her best.”
I closed my eyes.
He continued.
“And she said you'd send me to live with Grandma if I kept causing problems.”
My chest tightened.
“Son, I would never—”
“She said you wanted a new family.”
The words broke me.
I stared at my child.
He looked terrified.
Not simply because Vanessa had hit him.
Because he believed he was losing me.
I took his hands.
“Malik, look at me.”
He raised his eyes.
“You are my son.”
Tears streamed down his cheeks.
“You will always be my son.”
He began crying harder.
“And nobody gets to make you earn your place in this family.”
I hugged him.
Behind us, Vanessa began speaking.
“Marcus, please listen.”
I turned.
She looked desperate.
“I was trying to protect us.”
I stared at her.
“From what?”
She swallowed.
“Your son has been hiding things.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Then why did you plant the money?”
She looked away.
I stepped toward the table.
“Whose money is this?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Mine.”
I studied the bundles.
Each was secured with a bank band.
Then I noticed the white envelope beneath the bowl.
I pulled it out.
The envelope was thick.
On the front, someone had written two words in black ink.
PROJECT ELLIS.
My stomach tightened.
I recognized the name.
Ellis was the construction project my company had been struggling to complete for months.
Several payments had gone missing.
Our accountant couldn't explain the discrepancies.
I slowly looked toward Vanessa.
“Why is company money in our living room?”
May you like
Her face went completely white.
And suddenly, I understood the accusation against Malik might be hiding something far bigger than a cruel stepmother's lie.
