Surprise

Chapter 7

The police reached the pumping station before dawn.

I wasn't there.

I was sitting inside an unmarked vehicle nearly two miles away with a victim support officer.

My hands were clenched around Lily's purple hair ribbon.

Officer Bennett had promised to call as soon as he knew anything.

Marcus was at the police station giving another statement.

I hadn't spoken to him since our phone conversation.

For the first time in fourteen years, I didn't want him beside me.

I wanted my daughter.

Nothing else.

At 5:42 a.m., the radio crackled.

"Movement near the east entrance."

I leaned forward.

The support officer gently touched my shoulder.

"We need to remain here."

I nodded.

But my heart was pounding so hard it hurt.

A few seconds later, another voice came through.

"Adult male exiting the building."

Then silence.

Long, terrible silence.

I whispered a prayer.

Please.

Please.

Please.

The radio crackled again.

"Suspect moving toward a white van."

The support officer turned the volume down slightly.

I gripped her wrist.

"Please don't."

She looked at me.

"I want to hear," I whispered.

She nodded.

Then the radio erupted with overlapping voices.

"Police! Show your hands!"

"Suspect refusing commands."

"Vehicle door opening."

My stomach twisted.

Then I heard a sound I would never forget.

A child screaming.

"Mommy!"

I tried to open the car door.

The officer stopped me.

"Nia, please!"

"That's her!"

"I know."

"That's my baby!"

Tears blurred my vision.

I could hear shouting from the radio.

Then suddenly everything went quiet.

I thought I was going to die from the silence.

A full minute passed.

Then another.

Finally, Officer Bennett's voice came through.

"Child located. Female, approximately eight years old."

I stopped breathing.

He continued.

"She's conscious. We're requesting medical evaluation."

I collapsed against the seat.

The support officer began crying with me.

I could barely speak.

"Is she alive?"

She nodded.

"She's alive."

I kept repeating the words.

My baby is alive.

My baby is alive.

But I still hadn't seen her.

And until I held Lily in my arms, I couldn't believe the nightmare was ending.

Twenty minutes later, we drove toward the pumping station.

Police vehicles lined the narrow road.

An ambulance waited near the building.

Officer Bennett stood beside it.

When he saw me, he walked toward the car.

I almost fell getting out.

"Where is she?"

He pointed toward the ambulance.

I ran.

A paramedic stepped aside.

And there she was.

My little girl.

Wrapped in a blanket.

Sitting on the stretcher with her knees pulled against her chest.

Her braids were messy.

Her lips were dry.

Her eyes were frightened.

But she was there.

Alive.

"Lily!"

She looked up.

For one second, she didn't move.

Then her whole face crumpled.

"Mommy!"

She reached for me.

I lifted her into my arms.

I held her so tightly that a paramedic gently reminded me to be careful.

I loosened my grip.

But I couldn't let go.

Lily buried her face in my neck.

"I knew you'd come."

I sobbed into her hair.

"Always, baby. Always."

She started crying harder.

"I'm sorry I left."

I pulled back and looked into her eyes.

"No."

"But I thought Daddy—"

"No, sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong."

She shook her head.

"I wanted him to come home."

My heart shattered.

I kissed her forehead.

"You never had to make that happen."

She looked at me uncertainly.

"Are you mad?"

"Never."

I held her face gently.

"Nothing that happened was your fault. Do you understand?"

Her lower lip trembled.

Then she nodded.

A doctor checked her carefully.

She was dehydrated and exhausted.

She had lost some weight.

But there were no immediately apparent serious physical injuries.

The hospital would complete a full evaluation.

I listened to every word.

I asked questions.

I took notes.

I was terrified of missing something.

But Lily kept holding my hand.

Every time I moved, she tightened her grip.

So I stayed close.

Officer Bennett approached once the medical team finished.

"Mrs. Bennett, Daniel Carter is in custody."

I looked at him.

"Good."

"He tried to flee but was arrested without further injury to Lily."

I closed my eyes.

Finally.

The man who had stolen six nights of my daughter's childhood could no longer reach her.

At least, that was what I desperately wanted to believe.

Then Lily tugged my sleeve.

"Mommy?"

I turned immediately.

"Yes, baby?"

She glanced toward Officer Bennett.

"Can I tell you something?"

"Anything."

Her voice became very small.

"The man said Daddy was going to take me away."

My heart tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"He said Daddy didn't want you to have me anymore."

Officer Bennett crouched beside her.

"Lily, did Daniel tell you that?"

She nodded.

"He said Daddy gave him money to keep me."

I felt dizzy.

Officer Bennett looked at me.

He didn't speak.

He didn't need to.

Marcus had given Daniel two hundred thousand dollars.

And somehow Daniel had used that payment to convince my daughter that her father wanted her gone.

I forced myself to remain calm.

"Lily, grown-ups sometimes tell lies to scare children."

She stared at me.

"Was that a lie?"

I swallowed.

"We're going to find out exactly what happened."

She looked relieved that I hadn't dismissed her.

Then she whispered, "There's something else."

I leaned closer.

"What, sweetheart?"

"The lady came to see me."

My skin went cold.

"Vanessa?"

Lily nodded.

"She told me to stop crying."

I held her hand.

"What else?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"She said Daddy was going to marry her."

I closed my eyes.

Then Lily asked the question I had feared since the day Marcus left.

"Mommy, if Daddy has a new family, does that mean I'm not his little girl anymore?"

I pulled her against me.

"No, sweetheart."

My voice broke.

"Nothing can ever change who you are."

She whispered, "Promise?"

I kissed her forehead.

"I promise."

Then Officer Bennett's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and stepped away.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

"Mrs. Bennett, we need to discuss Marcus."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"The investigators found a second transfer to Daniel."

I stared at him.

"Another payment?"

He nodded.

"Five hundred thousand dollars."

My heart began pounding again.

"And it was made after Marcus knew Lily had been kidnapped."

For one terrible moment, the joy of finding my daughter collided with a question I could no longer avoid.

What exactly had my husband been hiding?
